The bones didn't just deform during foot binding. They literally broke the bones in the foot and toes. Sometimes, they would even insert pieces of glass or pottery around the toes to induce infection to make them die and fall off, creating an even smaller foot.
It was also done to small girls starting at the age of 2 - 4 when their bones are more small and malleable. They can be bound easily. I remember seeing it in a documentary where a lady who had her feet bound talked about her experience and how it was like to live in china back then.
even now a lot of patriarchal beauty standards are very harmful and dangerous, like fillers, breast augmentation, BBLs, liposuction, high heels, waist cinchers, etc. Sure, no one is literally forcing these things on women, but the standard is there and some feel a lot of pressure in that sense :/
Hindus generally only avoid cow products that come from the death/harm of the cow. Dairy products are not only accepted they are regarded as sacred and vital to the diet (particularly among the Southern Indian groups who are often vegetarian.
@@Meggzilla No way. In fact to return their karma to normal after long trips abroad some really orthodox Hindus will swallow a pill made of the five sacred products of the cow; milk, ghee, curds, dung, and urine (at one time some Hindus would also consecrate the tables they ate at by covering them with cow dung and then covering that with mango leaves. I assume they no longer do that, for health and hygiene reasons.) But no beef, no leather, probably no cheese since you get rennet by slaughtering a calf and getting it from the stomach lining (maybe non animal rennet cheese is okay, same as it is for those who keep kosher.*) and (assuming anyone still uses it) no making gamboge (a kind of yellow brown pigment used in paint. The traditional way to get it was to feed a cow mango leaves (which it had a hard time digesting) then collect the pigment from the dung. Nowadays I think they use the vegetable form you can get from the sap of many trees in the Garcinia genus (including mangosteens.**) * Paneer, while it looks like a cheese, is actually coagulated with lemon or other citrus juice, so it is okay. **That sap is also poisonous, so if you see any bright yellow sap spots on the rind on a mangosteen, wash them off before eating (if you consume the rind for health reasons). Southern Indian groups are usually non vegetarian, for example in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerela and Tamil Nadu less than 3% of the total population are vegetarians whereas Rajasthan has nearly 3/4th of the population as vegetarian.
No. South Indian groups are rarely vegetarian unless they are Brahmins. You fill find a good vegetarian percentage in North India and majority vegetarians in North West India.
Some things to note about Hinduism: 11:30 Polygamy was not at all encouraged. It was only okay in stories of Gods or if you're a King(for ensuring a successor) and not if you're a regular human. 20:15 Cremation on open pyres is still practiced all over India. Although now there are specific cremation locations where this is done generally near a river as that's where you spread the ashes after. 21:39 Cows are sacred but nobody avoids milk products in India. In fact it's the opposite. The reason why cows are sacred is because they provide milk/milk products and that's an integral part of Indian diet as well as all the edible offerings provided to the Gods in rituals. Indians are largely vegetarian but they'll be the last people to become vegan! 23:14 Child marriage was just arranged marriage done prematurely. The guy would be slightly older as it was rightly believed that girls emotionally mature faster than boys but they were both underage and in a similar age range. I am sure in some cases there were guys who were 40 marrying girls who were 15 but that's not the norm and nobody even back then thought that was okay. It was rightfully banned obviously and now the legal age for marrying is 18 for girls and 21 for boys since it is still believed that boys are 3 years dumber than girls! I know this because my grandparents were married when they were 15 & 13 which I always thought was crazy. Bonus: A Hindu practice that was also rightfully banned centuries ago and is very famous is 'Sati.' It was similar to widow strangulation but worse because you had to sit in his funeral pyre with his head on your lap and get burned alive with him to ensure the whole "stay together for the next 7 lives" thing.
Do note that self immolation is still practiced today. Many people see it as the ultimate form of protest and it truly creates a powerful image. Not just in religious protests, although a disproportionate number of self immolations were done by Buddhist and in particular Tibetan monks.
Over 20 States in America allow marriage to children as young as 12 and a few at age 10 to adults with the consent of the parents. Usually it's girls who are pregnant and been assaulted by a family member, acquaintance, etc.
@@averycheesypotato Now if you would remember yourself at age 17... Well, me and most of my classmates would see age restriction of 18 backwards. This is a serious problem as people develop differently - and then you have to regulate it with laws. A very bad legal minefield.
If the vulture population hadn't decreased then Dakhma wouldn't be an issue since vulture's feces have antiseptic in it so it would prevent the spread of infections since it would essentially be sanitizing their living area.
What the video failed to mention is the main reason why Dakhma was banned. It was directly causing the decline of vulture populations especially near the Towers of Silence were the ritual was in place. Basically the chemicals they mentioned were very much present in humans thus the consumption of their corpse lead to vultures getting poisoned as a result and dying. Basically, we got so full of chemicals that animals that ate us for millenniums, if they end up eating us now, get food poisoning. It goes to show how toxic we got in the last century due to diets, chemicals and pollution.
I think the substance that has decimated the culture population is Diclofenac. It is a painkiller/anti inflammatory drug. OK for humans and livestock but pure poison for the birds.
Honestly cow slaughtering have more serious consequences in Nepal than India. I mean nobody can slaughter the cows in Nepal. You can’t find any beef dish in most of the restaurants in the country. Apart from showing social status and conforming to beauty standards, foot binding in women in China also aimed to limit their movement. Back in the days, aristocrat women were rarely allowed out their bedrooms, let alone houses, except on the day of their marriage, when they meet their husband for the first time and move to his house. The idea of a women being hidden away from society, and not needing to undergo labour work (for instance, peasants didn’t bind their feet’s because they had to do farm work) was the ideal for a upper-class lady, just shows how low women’s status was in ancient China. Also, foot binding was NOT affiliated with any religion in China, it was just a practice of the Han Chinese women. Though the actual origin is unclear, it’s often to have originated from an emperor’s fascination over small feet (as it made dancers look dainty), and grew to become the beauty standard of China, then associating the practice with the moral standards of an upper class lady
It was never about beauty standards, it was about control. China was and still is a very patriarchal society. Binding the feet of a woman kept her shackled to the house and meant she was at the mercy of her husband, which mind you was also often an arranged marriage. These women were treated like the property of men.
Hinduism isn't polygamous, i ghink what you're referring to is, the kings being allowed to have many wives. The commoners were still only norm'd to have one wives, due to their certain reasons.
@kaasuillayappa If you think about it, this has not changed much even today. Celebrities, who are kinda considered god today get the most girls, while the commoners fight for their attention.
About Islam promoting polygamy: it doesn't. It only allows it under certain circumstances, and is otherwise forbidden. Even if everyone else approves of the marriage, it would still be forbidden if the other woman that the man is married to doesn't approve of it. ONLY in some circumstances can it be favored to marry a second woman, and it's VERY rare to find one that doesn't require the first woman's approval, like for example: protecting a woman from being exploited.
yes and it doesn't promote child marriage either, a girl/boy has to reach the age of maturity before getting married. some people in majority-Muslim cultures did practice it in the past but that was due to cultural norms, it's not Islamic
Islam doesn't promote it which is true but Islam sadly allows it and the criteria are basically as long as your first wife knows and you treat both equally in love, money protection etc then you're allowed. You need to love both equally which won't work because you can't like two people exactly the same you will always love one more than the other. And it's not true love if you love another woman while married. Plus you can protect a woman in a billion more ways than marrying her out of love. Have a great day and hopefully some people will realize that polygamy is wrong no matter what and that true marriage and true love can only be achieved by 2 people. Not three not four but two people only. One man one woman is true love not one man and 2 woman etc

6:06 there was also a Congolese man a couple months ago who set himself on fire in order to bring attention to the genocide occurring in the democratic republic of Congo. I can try my best to summarise, but I would advise looking up friends of the Congo. So many Congolese people are forced to work in dangerous and toxic mines in order to obtain minerals that are in our devices. They are paid so little it is akin to slavery. Children work in the mines. Sexual violence is often used as a weapon of war within the country. A lawsuit was filed a while ago to hold large tech companies such as Google, Apple, Dell accountable for profiting from the slave labour as the minerals such as Coltan are used in their products. They were sadly not held accountable at all. I would encourage anyone reading to read more on the conflict, I have a folder on my phone of posts and articles about it that I can also mention if that will help. We need to force these corporations to stop using minerals born of bloodshed and violence.

The last I checked, this was banned in the U.S., parental consent or not. There might be one state that still allows marriage at the age of 15 if a judge approves with parental consent, but that is hardly child marriage as per history, which involves prepubescent children.
I always believed child marriage was a cultural thing rather than religious. It was something that happened everywhere so… Christian’s, Jews, Hindu, Muslims and Sikh all practiced it at some point. So that made me think that was just a cultural thing and as society progressed, people abandoned this “thing”.
As someone who is near or even slightly a part of Igorot heritage, I cannot believe I heard the headhunting practice from someone else, of a different tribe/heritage.

@PamBeesly9545 btw the consummation is at 9 not 6. Plus even today maturity at 9 is still possible. But the point is that Islam allows marriage at the onset of PUBERTY. So it literally include mental puberty. So it's fallacious to ask me if I would I marry 9 yo. Bcoz maturity has no specific age depending on time and region. Hi : ). Just wanted to clear one thing 23:34 : It is a practice but not a command of Islam. Islam does not tells you to go and marry a child. In fact, those who claim Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) married Mother Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) at a very young age, ignore solid evidences that say the otherwise. Marriage is something that must be done when both partners are at a somewhat mature age, especially in today's world. Both Men and Women must be given equal chances to grow and enjoy - tough it is still not correct to say that marriage stops either of them from enjoying - still ,especially in todays world, child marriage must not be allowed: ) Thanks for reading. May Allah guide us all. Peace : )
There isNO evidence that says otherwise. Once your body is ready to become a mother you ARE mature enough for marriage. Hazrat Ayesha had her nikah at the age of six and everyone waited until she became a menstruating WOMAN aged nine.
@muhammadabdullahimran2185 you are not rude at all. You can't argue with biology. A WOMAN is a WOMAN. If she CAN be a mother then she IS mature and mentally ready. The ruling still stands today. TODAY a 15 year old MAN should be getting married to menstruating women whatever her age is.

23:12 Child marriage is not allowed in Islam. Both the man and the woman must have reached puberty, and are mentally mature and able to consent. Age of 18 is enforced by some of the west and is not a valid way of telling a child from an adult. Just as there are non mature 16 year olds, there are non mature 20 year olds. Why not raise the age to 20 then?
Jzk akhi he thinks we get married young to "stop her from doing other stuff" completely ignorant to the actual truth. That's y I'm iffy on this channel
Didn’t Muhammad marry a 6 year old, and consummate the marriage when she was 9? By all accounts I would say a 6-9 year-old is definitely a child and not mature enough or developed to be considered an adult.
They take actual brain development into account as well, and life stages and childhood milestones have been extremely well studied. If it was me I'd say 18 across the board minimum. I'm a RN and this is what I'm basing my comment off. We don't make rules based on outliers, it is based on what is typically expected. Those things have been learned through long term studies, data collection, anatomical structure observation and identification, and years of scientific research. Adulthood in the Western world is typically 18. Just because our governments may have some idiotic marriage or consent laws making it earlier in some states or places doesn't mean the brain is suddenly an adult at that age now. Politics and science don't often agree. Let's not pretend this is about religion anymore in 2024.
I mean, you generally can symbolically do anything, as long as everyone involved is consenting. Like, I physically cringe from the tradition of the ransom on the wedding, but as long as it's just symbolic and the couple and the fiancée's family are all into it, it's none of my business. The bones didn't just deform during foot binding. They literally broke the bones in the foot and toes. Sometimes, they would even insert pieces of glass or pottery around the toes to induce infection to make them die and fall off, creating an even smaller foot.
I didn't think anyone else knew about this! Jolly good show sir👏👏👏👏
It was also done to small girls starting at the age of 2 - 4 when their bones are more small and malleable. They can be bound easily. I remember seeing it in a documentary where a lady who had her feet bound talked about her experience and how it was like to live in china back then.

Some things to note about Hinduism:
11:30 Polygamy was not at all encouraged.

Dakhma is still practiced in india in two places , but more less people are opting for it , as you said due to vulture population

Commoners couldn't afford multiple baby mommas.

Kings can be damned with that HIV
But it happens and there is no muslim protesting against it .

Another banned practice worthy of note was Sati. A practice in Hinduism where a widowed woman would throw themselves onto their husbands funeral pyre as a sacrifice.
Once they were in power in the 19th century, the British began cracking down on the practice and made it punishable. Then in 1987, the Indian government passed the Sati (Prevention) Act, which banned glorification of the practice in the hope of shunning those thinking of engaging in such an act from doing it in the first place.

If you're talking about Sister Wives (and shows like Escaping Polygamy) it's very simple: legally they aren't polygamous. Kuru is a degenerative brain disease caused by Prion Proteins (Misfolded Proteins) found exclusively in Papua New Guinea as recently as the 1960’s. Kuru, the same as other Prion diseases like CJD and FFI, is 100% fatal, the longest anyone has survived with a Prion disease was three years. Prions are only track able after death, the brain will have small holes or spongy parts in the middle. Prions cause cellular death in the brain, leading to conditions like memory loss or slurred speech. Kuru itself causes dramatic weight loss, rhythmic jerking of the body, loss of motor skills, difficulty swallowing, aches and pains and uncontrollable fits of laughter.
to note, polygamy in islam is allowed, but there are many conditions in order for the man to be allowed to have more than one wife, including being able to be fair between all wives and provide each with equal daily needs and wants. women's rights are very prioritised in islam, and it's very important that the first wife has given permission to the husband to have a second wife, so on and so forth.

fun fact: polygamy is actually much more common in the US than in India or the Islamic world because even though their religions allow them to take on multiple wives, most men can't afford to have multiple wives and fornication and adultery are considered huge sins for them so most of them tend to only have one partner with which they have experienced intimacy with as opposed to the US in which the average number of sexual partners is a horrendous 7.2 for both men and women. Due to the normalization of fornication and adultery, and the removal of sacrality from marriage.
Polygamy is literally not common in the US because it’s illegal in every single state. You literally cannot legally marry more than one person so I don’t know why you’re making stuff up😂
