No offense to Hans Zimmer but Toto's version felt more operatic.

Hans explicitly and deliberately did not want it to be operatic, so he would probably take that as a compliment.
Hans Zimmer's musical approach to Dune has been an utter disaster. He's a terrific composer, but I've never heard a more misguided score. He went for the minimalist approach when the visuals demanded grandeur. Denis Villeneuve is a primarily visual director who, by his own admission, dislikes dialogue. That's where you need strong, melodic, hummable, leitmotif-based music. A load of percussion, a couple of synths and some vaguely ethnic wailing is no substitute. The videos kicking around showing scenes from the Villeneuve film using music from Toto's score and Brian Tyler's Children of Dune score amply demonstrate how important music is to cinema, notably Dune. The same as with Blade Runner 2049 - a rushed, generic, library music-style Vangelis soundalike - Hans Zimmer's score has seriously weakened Denis Villeneuve's work. It's not that Villeneuve's films are bad - far from it - but they desperately need better music. I'll now duck as people scream their outrage! 😄
@DomH75 - Well, on what concerns the new Dune films, I agree with you. But, when talking about Blade Runner 2049, it certainly needed a minimalist AND a Vangelis-soundalike music. Or don't you think Vangelis' soundtrack for Blade Runner is amazing?
@@fal081069 I bought Vangelis's score the day it came out on CD back in the 1990s. They should have hired Vangelis for 2049 in the first place - he said they never even asked him. Jóhann Jóhannson's score was dumped late in the day and the Zimmer/Wallfisch team rushed out a very mediocre score in the limited time they had. Vangelis's score was full of memorable tunes - actual melodies. Zimmer gave us synths and heavy percussion, plus a couple of watered-down Vangelis soundalikes. No real melodies: just noise. I have no problem with Vangelis soundalikes, but Vangelis's score wasn't about synths: it was about what he did with the synths. Blade Runner 2049 was weakened by such a mediocre score. Had Zimmer and Wallfisch been given the time to do it, I'm sure it could have been better. As it stands, the score is dull, as is the soundtrack album.
For this OST, we must praise Toto, absolutely no doubt about it, but not forgetting Brian Eno, for his "Prophecy Theme". It was a great contribution to an already amazing soundtrack.

You get no argument from me, dude. Back in early 1985, I saw DUNE 5 times at the cinema, including 3 times in London, in 70mm.
It remains one of my all-time top-5 films.
It also stamps Villeneuve's version into the ground...or should that be sand? 🙂

It's so nice to see that this movie has gotten it's recognition finally. And on that note, David Lynch has finally get open about doing a directors cut of the movie. Here's hoping and waiting 👍
David Lynch's Dune deserves a special edition, the same way The Abyss, Aliens and Terminator 2 got them.

I remember the iconic opening credits of this film anytime I see a field of sand dunes, and this theme plays in my head.

Toto has played dune songs in their concerts, like in the 25th anniversary or in the 40 tours around the sun
There is a whole lot more to appreciate about that movie.
Toto performed the Desert Theme (album version) in two tours: in 1988 Seventh One Tour, and most notably in 2018 40th anniversary tour 40 Tours Around the Sun. Search for that one, is pure gold.

I don't care what people and critics and even David Lynch says, even he doesn't or didn't realized the masterpiece and the incredibly significant piece of art he created; Dune 1984 has been mercilessly misunderstood and miss characterized for far too long, I think it's time to revisit it and give it its rightful place. Mr. Lynch... Reclaim your masterpiece.

I saw the movie in a sneak preview in 1984 and HATED it. But the music was fantastic!! I bought the soundtrack as soon as it was released.

It is a big mistake to take the under-director Denis Villeneuve to such a film, knowing that each of his films is despondency and unprofessionalism in every frame. Only the same shameful music can be written for his shameful films. Hans Zimmer handled it well.

Totalement d'accord avec vous ! L'univers de "Dune" exige une musique ambitieuse. Toto l'avait bien compris en 1984 en créant un thème principal puissant et mémorable pour le film de Lynch avec des variantes (comme pour Star Wars par exemple)... Alors que Zimmer a choisi le minimalisme, grave erreur ! De toute façon, des sagas comme ça réclament une identité musicale forte, c'est évident !

The world of “Dune” demands ambitious music. Toto understood this well in 1984 by creating a powerful and memorable main theme for Lynch's film with variations (like for Star Wars for example)... While Zimmer chose minimalism, big mistake! In any case, sagas like that demand a strong musical identity, that’s obvious!

Anoche vi la pelicula en el cine, por su 40 aniversario, y es magnífica, la música, los sets, la historia, las actuaciones fueron buenísimas. Y comparada con la nueva película, la nueva está vacía, sin sentimientos. La versión de 1984 tiene corazón y alma.
