  • I thought I'd better do another video with more information following on from a few comments on my video on how to mount a Tikka T3X action into a MDT XRS rifle chassis/stock:
    • Fitting a Tikka T3X ri...
Also please have a look at:
    • MDT XRS Chassis - Tikk...
Which shows what can happen if you don't use a level to set your action.
This video compares the Tikka T3x chassis/stock inlets between a GRS Bifrost, a standard Tikka, and a MDT XRS.
This is an email I received from MDT Support:
    Hello,
Thank you for the message and the video; you are correct. Without the action screws tight, you will be able to shift the action left and right as the actions are meant to pull the action down into the V-Block. And you are correct, we do not utilize the flat spots as we to accommodate all action tolerances we've come across. I don't see anything out of normal, and I wouldn't recommend a framing level for this type of work as it's not its intended function (small parts) and going to produce some very interesting results. You can see around your video where the action gets pulled into the V-Block and corrects itself. Also, please always tighten the front action screw first. Also, please ensure to seat your recoil lug before torqueing your action screws. Hopefully, this helps, please let us know if you have any further questions.
    Regards
    xxxxxx

Good eye. I was also surprised to see the fact that the Tikka recoil lug was literally siliconed into the chassis! Yes SILIONE on both the Oryx and the XRS. Not only could you move them side to side but there was also silicon under the lug itself. Scraped all of that mess out and did a proper bedding on the lug. Was not at all impressed for that price in both of these aspects.

What matters is that the barrelled action be secured to the chassis and the action and scope level to each other.

To me the only thing that makes MDT successful is the MDT fanboys that keep buying their WAY overpriced chassis', and they keep convincing the shooting public that they should buy MDT chassis' and people keep falling for it. I can't stand "plastic" stocks, or even plastic stocks with aluminum frames. It needs to be carbon fiber or wood. What you've pointed out is why GRS says you don't need to "bed" their stock. It's because they did their homework on the actions to ensure they get good lockup. It's a minor thing, but it makes a major difference.

I was able to install direct into chassis and tighten bolts with no leveling issue.

Fraser, that's good to know. I was able to see visually that mine wasn't level the very first time I installed it.
One bit of advice, make sure you re-torque the action after your first outing, you may find it settle down a bit after a few rounds.
From the very first rounds of mine, I was loving the chassis, you can tell from the direct chassis response compared to polymer stocks...

I really enjoy my XRS chassis.

Thanks for doing the video, I am looking into a MDT XRS stock for my tikka t3x super varmint. My question to you is is it worth it? Also does the bolt remove from the action without dropping the cheek piece down? It doesn't clear the cheek piece on the original stock unless its all the way down. Annoying when i have to drop the cheek piece every time when removing the bolt for storage. I am a bit of a perfectionist so seeing that the action doesn't sit on the intended flat spots on the stock/chassis makes me think that its not been designed well enough and is just irritating.

Bottom line is "Yes" it's worth it in my opinion. I've used the GRS Bifrost & Berserk stocks and their ergonomics are better, but for a rigid stock with attachment options the XRS stock is a must.
The very first shot I fired with the XRS was a game changer, it was so solid and didn't flex like the GRS stocks, that is not to say the GRS stocks flex much, but when you've fired a solid stock you notice the difference.
One of the main reasons I changed was I wanted to fit a ARCA rail, so I could use on a Camera Tripod (see other videos).
My main shooting style is driving to a spot in my buggy at night, setting up the rifle on the tripod (fitted with thermal scope), and getting out my camping seat. I'll then sit there with a Thermal Spotter and wait 2-3 hours. The other night I saw 3 Muntjac in a wood and head shot all 3 from 115 yards away off the tripod.

The other thing is you can use 10 round AICS magazines!

Great vid, thank you! Do you know if this is isolated to MDT's XRS chassis, or their other offerings as well? Cheers again 👍

To be honest, I don't know.
I wouldn't have thought they would change there bedding method between chassis.

Why not just bed it? It'll be a perfect footprint

Which do you prefer?? Bifrost or XRS

    • @nwashin1

Bottom line, I prefer the XRS.
That said the ergonomics of the Bifrost are far better, the grip is shaped to your hand etc.
The XRS also meant I could use 10 shot AICS magazines.
My first shot with the XRS was a game changer - you immediately felt how solid it was in comparison to the Bifrost.
One of my main reasons for changing was I want to use the rifle on a tripod, which meant affixing a rail, which was straight forward with the XRS.
