      To be fair I think that moment with the countess is what pushed him over the edge, the revelation that monsters do in fact exist could be enough to push even the most reasonable man into irrational thinking. And maybe in that moment "The Thing beneath the Manor" spoke to him making its move to use him to enter our world starting with a massive blood sacrifice, leading to the events before the Darkest Dungeon.

      @@oscarriveraabal9390 above all else the Ancestor desired power, he wanted to be something more than merely a man. His wealth and noble upbringing had already allowed him to experience every pleasure available to humans in this world and he had become bored with that. A few, brief, glimpses into the occult had shown him that the universe did in fact have more to offer, so he pursued that in hopes of learning secrets beyond human or mortal understanding. The Countess was his first encounter with something truly supernatural and he recklessly pursued this revelation with every ounce of obsession he had. It's debatable whether he actually defeated the Countess or not, it's very likely that the Countess allowed him to win because she knew what he would do or the Heart of Darkness intervened and helped the ancestor to win. The Countess definitely has a connection to the Heart, whether as a creation, servant, avatar, or just another human who was deeply cursed by it like the ancestor. Regardless, the Countess was very likely sent or lured to the ancestor by the Heart to sent the events of the game in motion and prepare for the Heart's awakening.

    I love how everything in Crimson Court just fits together so well. Everyone's a vampire, but not just a stereotypically supernatural one; They're all just gross hybrids of man and mosquito. Mosquitoes, of course, tend to hang out in swampy areas, which is where the courtyard is placed. So the people of the courtyard, turned into foul mashings of bug and human, just sorta stayed there. It's like a puzzle where every piece fits the other perfectly.

    He must just be really good at killing things. I mean, his first thought when seeing her is "gosh, i'm not doing anything interesting today, how about I kill this person and serve her blood as wine."
    As for the Countess, git gud skrub
    Also, he only drank a drop, which implies to me that he only got a small enough dose to sense the blood flowing through the Heart of the World without going into a blood-frenzy. I don't think there was a secret plan by the Countess, the Ancestor isn't sensible enough to predict what he's going to do on any given day.
    Also also, the Ancestor's Vintage must not be 100% The Blood or else it would prevent Crimson Curse Craving entirely. It might actually be a blood-based wine derivative or something. I have no clue there, but it isn't 100% Blood whatever it is.
    Basically, he took 1/100th the dose of Blood that most everyone else took (especially since everyone else there is a hedonist and probably drank plenty of the stuff without thinking). Perhaps he wanted to savor his victory, rather than gulp it down gluttonously. Who knows.

    I'd like to point out the Ancestor is the most terrifying thing in these scenes. For starters, this random lady walks down the hall whom the ancestor SUSPECTS, is a bad person. His first thought? To murder her. Secondly, if you look at the ancestor after he kills the countess, you see no visible wounds on him, which means he fought the count with what could be considered a butter knife and won WITHOUT A SCRATCH. Thirdly, even after the count turned into a weremosquito or whatever, he still decided "Hey, let's put this ladies blood in this wine!" and even after the wine was served and all the guests turned into weremosquitos you can still see at the ending scene that the ancestor is again, without harm. Which either means he somehow fought every guest there and won without taking a hit, or somehow was ignored by everyone.
    In conclusion: Thank god the Ancestor is no longer alive, he would be by far the hardest boss to beat in this game.

    What's kinda terrifying is that the Countess doesn't start out as that horrifying monster we encounter: She was able to take a human form, as we see here, but while the ancestor defeated her, he didn't kill her. After all, he didn't stake her through the heart, and her blood clearly didn't coagulate. But time passed, her servants brought her more and more blood, and she changed from a mere vampire to a kind of uber-vamp.

    • @darklord884
      @darklord884 Год назад +17

      What makes her terrifying is that we never truly know who or what she actually was, much less what she might have been planning, if anything at all.
      We see that the Ancestor referred to her as "A bewitching predator" and that the moon revealed "her in human desires" but we do know that madness runs in the family for the Ancestor, plus he himself admits that he was "driven mad by cloying vulgarity" and that he willingly let the Baron torture and kill people in his home because he didn't want to seem like a hypocrite. His first thought upon seeing her is also to kill her, so we have no idea of the true extent of just what happened there.
      Was the Countess truly an evil monster at the time? Was she truly killed and then resurrected or did she play along and let him infect everyone with her blood? Was it even her blood that caused this and not the house vintage? How come she appears first as this human lady but turns into a gargantuan monster by the time the heir arrives? Why is it that if she is the only queen of this insect plague, she gives officer positions to particularly deranged people?
      So many questions and so much lore to theorise about, but ultimately we cannot draw absolute conclusions. There are just enough stray strands to say "Hmmm...but maybe not." to make it seem vague, unfocused and much scarier than it ever could be if they made a clear declaration of just how powerful any one character is.

      The Ancestor has committed so MANY atrocities it's actually easy to lose track. Murder? That's the least of his crimes. Calling him a murderer is like calling a tornado a breeze. It's not overlooked... it's eclipsed by all the other bullshit he's done. You're worried about a crime he almost committed. Who gives a shit. That's nothing. Maybe if someone else had done it, that would be of note, but THIS ASSHOLE is special. He goes above and beyond ordinary evil. What about the time he chained a young girl to a statue and pushed her into the ocean so she could drown to death AND fish monsters could transform her into their queen fish monster? What about the time he created deformed pig people with dark magic and then dumped them all into a sewer? What about the time he hired mercenaries to kill large amounts of the local populace because they dared complain about all THE DARK MAGIC he was plaguing them with? And that's just the tip of the iceberg. You're worried about the time he almost killed a lady? One lady? Who was a monster and deserved it? That wasn't even the fucked up part! He used her blood to make wine that turned all his guests into vampires! For fun! Where is your head at??

They did this in KOTOR too where they used a simplistic representation of the big reveal at the end to hide it in plain sight (the Unknown Ruins on Dantooine have banners with an emblem on it that's shaped exactly like the Star Forge, foreshadowing that it's a space station like the Death Star). Note how, at 1:52 and 1:55, it has the precise same shape as the halo your heroes get when they're afflicted.

      In short, he was already one sick puppy. All this event appeared to do was prompt him to look into what was underneath the manor.

    • @Bramzter
      @Bramzter 7 лет назад +69

      I suspect that the countess might have been a previous servant of the heart of darkness, since she was the source of the crimson curse, The ancestor did not know this of course and just saw a political and slightly off in retroprospect threat in the countess and just barely managed to incapaticate it. with the ancestor being in his younger less experienced with fucked up shit might he have intended to blackmail the nobility by feeding them the countess's blood wine but did not anticipate them going utter batshit, then due to him ingesting a single drop of the blood, he saw the truth and hence started his mad dive to the darkest dungeon

    • @bossfight1
      @bossfight1 7 лет назад +6

      Speculating here; whatever way she came upon that power, perhaps she had ties to the "singularly striking young woman" who apparently knew of the horror beneath the manor, and would later on become the Hag. This is probably entering fanfiction territory, but perhaps the two were related and came upon a sample of the Heart of Darkness. But while the Countess drank of it without abandon, her friend/relative wanted to know more about the stuff and decided to work with the Ancestor to get a better idea of what they were dealing with.

    • @RaichuWizDom
      @RaichuWizDom 7 лет назад +31

      +Joep Van Melick Well, the game draws a lot of lore from Lovecraft, and Lovecraft got his stuff from occultism and basic science, sooo...
      The Blood being ingested is perhaps not just the blood of the Countess; it would have to be mixed for it to pass as wine. Even if it's not, it's likely to be a potent hallucinogen. And alkaloids and other drugs have been used to get visions since time immemorial, so there's a good chance it was the Blood that got him started on his quest. It's pretty accurate, too: one of the noted effects of drugs (heroin or crack, I forget which) is that the nerves on the skin tingle, making it feel like there are bugs crawling underneath, which then leads patients to scratch themselves raw, to the point of bleeding. The nobles here turned on themselves, remember, not each other. They're chewing their own arms off.
      However, the opening of the game implies he'd gotten tired of conventional extravagance and then started experimenting. He had a broad, broad taste in magic, ranging from demon summoning into pigs to necromancy to more hallucinogenic vision drugs.
      The whole Courtyard storyline seems to paint the Ancestor as less of a Lovecraft character and more of a Marquis de Sade type. By the time the Countess came around, he was already getting tired of the usual thrills, and had turned to murder and such for his buzz. Not only that, but he was *surrounded* by people who felt the same way. What makes the Ancestor different is that he ended up finding something else to get his rocks off: that magic and that portal. Keep in mind, he got tired of demonic magic in the end, too.
      He was evil before the Countess came around, and so were the other nobles. Possibly he was already experimenting with magic by then. But the Countess set him on the path to finding the portal, that is definitely true. Possibly the reason he was different was because he was tampering with magic already at that point, or the mansion itself was already exerting some influence on him, making him less susceptible to the cannibalism reflex and more open to the vision side of it.

      +Boah-Noah I'd suggest that the Countess is exactly as she appears to be: A parasite, there to drink the blood of the star-spawn's errant flesh that is humanity. It would explain the motif of the bloodsuckers as ticks and mosquitoes, while the Crimson Curse would be their way of reproducing like a virus, taking the flesh that is humanity and twisting it to fit their form. It would explain why the gentry began devouring themselves as the urge to devour humanity took over while it gave the Ancestor a quick glimpse of outside truth before he decided to become one with the Heart of Darkness.

    In those younger years, my home was a hive of unbridled hedonism.
    A roiling apiary, where instinct and impulse were indulged with wild abandon.
    A bewitching predator, slipped in amidst the swarm of tittering sycophants.
    Though outwardly urbane, I could sense in her a mocking thirst.
    Driven half mad by cloying vulgarity,
    I plotted to rid myself of this lurking threat in a grand display of sadistic sport.
    But as the moment of murder drew nigh, the gibbous moon revealed her inhuman desires in all their stultifying hideousness.
    Mercifully the morbid encounter resolved itself in my favor.
    And I set to work pursuing degeneracy, in its most decadent forms.
    The air pulsed with anticipation, as I revealed the unnatural terroir of the house vintage.
    But my exultation was cut short, as the attending gentry turned upon themselves in an orgy of indescribable frenzy.
    A single drop of that forbidden tannin gifted me with a dizzying glimpse of the hibernating horror beneath my feet and in that moment,
    I understood the terrible truth of the world.
    I stood reborn, molted by newfound knowledge.
    My head throbbing to the growing whine of winged vermin come to drink the tainted blood...
    Of the Darkest Dungeon.
    Typing this out just because I want to see how many words I could learn from this cutscene.

    Also, good lord, the Ancestor is just the worse. Like, he invites a bunch of asshole nobles to his home, decides to kill one of them for no discernible reason (though that reason quickly becomes “self-defence”). Then, for yet another unknown reason, he drains the Countess’ blood and gives it to the other asshole nobles as wine.
    Furthermore, this is before he got into his whole “evil sorcerer” schtick. This wasn’t for some ritual, he did all of this purely because the mood struck him.

    I believe I have a feeling that the crimson curse that the countess carries might just be the blood of The heart of darkness itself and that the countess is full of the hearts blood and that the the crimson curse is self terminating, because the countess actually dosent infect somebody on the scale the nobles were infected and she isn't so powerful and fit when the ancestor was alive. And she's depressed quite rapidly since she's lost almost all the hearts blood and that the blood gives visions to certain people of the heart of darkness and it also may be a lure of sorts to draw certain people to the heart of darkness

    I would like to point out a small detail I just thought about.
    The first time you attempt the Viscount mission, the ancestor says that they discarded the idea of eating the composting refuse because it was "decidedly unhealthy". However, literally everyone at his party sees nothing wrong with drinking an eldritch mosquito's blood. You'd think that drinking any blood would be more unhealthy than a bit of rotting food, but I guess I'm not rich enough to understand.

    The Countess has an interesting design choice. Every single character in the game has their eyes obscured by shadow, except for her, which are an unsettling shade of deep red. The eyes are the windows to the soul, so having one’s eye shrouded is to obscure the soul, but to have them as pure red is to show that this person is proudly inhuman.

    Up untill now, I am still not sure to the bone if Shiki or Darkest Dungeon has the most mindfucked, straightforwardly merciless story of all, but the urge to choose DD as the most terrifying game yet having the most beautiful narration is drawing me close intensly.
    Yup.

    In style, Marie Antoinette is more than Countess Bathory. I would call the DLC Queen Toinette's Revenge. When he killed her in this accursed place and gave everyone to drink this blood in which there were memories of the Terror of 1794, all those who drank the blood became the very beasts that began a real feast of madness. =)
