  • In this video, I visit Shadow Lake near Sunrise on Mount Rainier (Tahoma) in Washington. I find a lovely spot to paint a pretty alpine lake. It's a lovely, cold, sunny day and a great spot for plein air oil painting. I show and discuss my approach to painting trees, clouds and water in oil.

    Jon, thought I was the only one who is OCD about cleaning his pallet good to know I’m not he only one. I like room to mix without fighting colors I don’t want. I enjoy your videos and style. Thanks for sharing your work.

      Thanks so much for watching and for your feedback! I’ve had my nose to the easel finishing up some paintings, but hopefully I’ll get back to editing some videos before too long.

    Lovely painting Jon, enjoyed your colourful starting wash, I may try this myself! The instrument the hiker was playing is called a Kora. It's a west African harp common in Senegal, Mali and Gambia, maybe elsewhere. The body is made from a hollowed out calabash gourd. If you liked the sound of the instrument I recommend checking out Toumani Diabate who is probably the best internationally known player. I also really like Sona Jobareth and Seckou Keita has also done some great collaborations with a traditional Welsh harpist called Catrin Finch. Thanks for sharing your painting adventures with us!

      Thank you so much Nening! I’ll definitely look for those artists. It was a really pure and fitting sound - so peaceful out in the woods. Thank you for joining me on my adventures 😃

    I've seen videos from Mali with that kind of instrument. It's called a kali, I think. Love your video. The scene is similar to a photo I took years ago at Lake Hume in the Sierra Nevadas. I think I will do a pastel painting of that photo. I have taken a screen shot of yours to help with colors. I love your decriptions of your color choices and why you do your paint the way you do. Thanks.

    Nice work and video of your procedure! Curious, why turps and Gamsol?
    Must have been getting cold can hear it in your voice.

      I was getting cold! Thanks for the question. I love the effects and abstraction in an initial wash. I prefer using turps, but the fumes can make me woozy so I only use them if there is a breeze, and only at the beginning. I’ve done a few videos where I talk about why if you want to look back

      @@JonBradhamArtist Thanks Jon, will look back for that info. Woozy indeed, I remember the days when OMS weren't widely available. Once worked for an artist that used steamed distilled turp, horrible stuff. Like the effect of the very thinned out wash, going to mess around with that initial 'abstract' approach.

    Appreciate all of your content. It's a pleasure to watch.
    I have a question: How do you feel about having your equipment in the sun versus the shade? Today, I went plein air painting for the first time in my life, and I heard people online talk about not getting the sun on your canvas or palette. I ended up getting sun on my canvas, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm going to try standing in the shade next time. I would love to hear if you have any insights.
    Best,
    Willy

    • @JonBradhamArtist
      @JonBradhamArtist  Год назад +1

      Thank you for watching Willy! For me, I prefer to paint in light, consistent shade. Light enough that I can still see color and value. It’s very important that the light is consistent on your palette and your canvas so you can judge color and value. If I have to paint in the sun I’ll try to turn my easel so that both the linen panel and the palette are in the same light and hopefully not blinding light. If I paint in deep shade I have a lamp I clip on which I’ve shown in a few videos. Happy painting 😃
