I recently attempted to paint in the bright sun. I had no umbrella or shade. Mixed up what looked like a light wheat color on the palette, put it on the canvas and it was a much darker value and greenish blue instead of light yellowish brown. I’ve never had trouble mixing a color in my studio. I didn’t expect such a significant problem.

Yes it’s a challenge - I usually have to turn my easel or find some light shade - it doesn’t always work 😅

Never seen you before. Didn't think you'd be able to pull it off, then was surprised to see a final result that reminded me of the French painter Marquet, one of my favorites, who paints like a child but captures light and sense of place like an adult. Bravo!

A challenging composition and changeable conditions! It reminded me of Venice! The mooring poles and water reflections and you illustrated how light and conditions change so quickly. I usually cannot bare to watch the Sky UK Landscape Artist competition - i find it too contrived, I find the criteria used by the judges subjective and the three hour time limit places pressure on the artists. On top of that, they ahve to deal with 180 degree change in light and weather conditions! You did very well to cope. I do have so called oil papers which resemble canvas but I tend to use them for unimportant studies or as a record of colour mixing compilations. I have the book on Monet's Rouen cathedral series and Monet was driven may but the Normandy weather - as changeable as England's! Ian Roberts seems to recommend taking oil primed linens and taping them to boards for painting. When I made a September drive to Narbonne in 2015, I found conditions in France so windy that i did not attempt to do an oil and resorted to watercolour in shattered places. When I got there wind farms in every direction underlined the point that the gap between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic was wind rich! You may be fine in other parts of France but the Midi is known for the Mistral and most local properties used a lot of bamboo windbreaks. Good luck !

Thanks for watching and for the feed as always Ian! I was not impressed with the oil paper - it seems to lack luminosity with oil paint. I’ve tried charcoal drawing on it and that works pretty well if you want texture - I’ve tried gouache on it as well with mixed results. I’ll keep playing with it to use up what I bought 😊 I do like Landscape Artist of the Year - I can find them here on YT once in a while and Prime has the first few seasons. I often disagree with the judges, but I enjoy seeing some artists I know on there (like Haidee-Jo Summers) and I enjoy seeing the different approaches taken by the artists. I love seeing all the sights around the UK they pick as well and add many of them to my ‘want to visit and paint’ map. Best to you and yours!

    • @JonBradhamArtist

Thank you for watching and for the feedback! You can cut it with a sharp utility knife- just use a metal ruler, be very careful of your fingers, and run the blade along the new edge over and over, scoring a little deeper each pass, until you get a nice clean cut all along

    • @JonBradhamArtist

Thanks for watching out for your question. I do use gamsol, especially when there’s poor ventilation. However, I love the effects of real turpentine in the initial wash. I talk about it in some of my videos. It dries faster, flows differently, I like the effects. I’ve tried turpenoid, but I don’t find it behaves the same as real turpentine
