Ottomans were very sophisticated. As a Muslim, I wish the empire survived so I could live wherever I wanted. The idea of nation states has hurt the world and has divided it and caused wars.

Unfortunately the downfall of our empire started when we got too much influenced by Europe and specially Germany. When the young Turks took over, it was too late. They destroyed all the heritage to bring ''freedom and democrasy''.

The Ottomans were not colonial, they were imperial and spread via conquest not colonies.
The Ottomans did not impose Islam over the entirety of the Balkans, which they could have over the hundreds of years they existed.
They did not exploit countries wealth, they conquered the country and invested into the land. Much of the Balkans, Levantine and North African territories were developed under the Ottomans.

Her fetih savaş yoluyla gerçekleştirilmiştir, kolonileştirme yoktur. Savaşla ele geçirilen yabancı topraklara sivil "settlers" gönderilmemiş değildir. Ancak, bu işi savaş bittikten sonra yapmışlardır.

As you would know better than me, we could never win an argument against an ignorant..
so called modern west would still be selling actual human beings just because their skin is a little bit darker if internet hadn’t invented..
Can you get any logical question from Crusaders ?
Can you get any logical answer from the children of the Barbarians ?
I could never win against an ignorant, that’s what west is..
    Build up upon the colonization..
With colonization, In a year, I would make 10 trillion dollars every year by working just an hour a day..
Can you ask the west, could they survive so far as we did, against these ignorant monsters, we only cared, we only showed mercy..
    Who are we ?
I am history, I am civilization, I am mercy, I am united, I am earth, I am humanity, I am the protector of animals, I am Turk, I am Albanian, I am Syrian, I am Kurd, I am Tacik, I am Arab, I am Bosnian or Slavic.. I am islam, I am the peace, I am the ultimate answer to the only question that matters…
    “WHY”
Does the west have an actual legit answer, or would they like to colonize us more to get an answer..
Only and only Gazali is enough to crash all the “ethics” that west could ever achieve with all their artists and philosophers..
We were ALWAYS at the right side of history, even though we stood or we fall..
We stood in the right side, we fell in the right side..

Before I begin, I want to comment how exceptionally well this video has been made.
Throughout history, the wars, trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchanges between Turks and Europeans have been so deeply intertwined that a Turk is as European as a Frenchman. Therefore, you cannot separate Turks from Europe, nor Europe from the Turks."
I would also like to draw a comparison to two brothers who always fight but eventually reconcile and act normal. The Habsburgs and Ottomans fought each other for centuries, yet in the end, they fought side by side in WWI. Both Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire fell together-a surprisingly tragic story."

Thanks for being true to history. Well summarized for 7 mins also mentioned meritocracy. The governing system was also very complex. Too many people depends it to imperial system but to be honest they were very democratic even more than today's so called democratic states. Too many states were under protection because simply they wanted to be ruled by ottomans. They didn't invade them like the other imperial countries. Also they didn't want to rob their own people under the tax systems. There were strick rules and taxing stood same from 1700's to the end. Hard working state and even gave idea to the most ideologies like socialism, communism and many more without saying it. Cheers.

The empire would have survived if the later sultans had the same vision as Muhammed the Conquerer. But the Empire had to deal with many wars in different continents at the same time. Even this wasn't the biggest danger. The biggest danger were the traitors inside the palace who took over and destroyed the heritage and empire.

coffee was something they drink by boiling green beans for rejuvenating effects. Turks turned that into a sophisticated drink, roasting, grinding, brewing, serving with specialized cups even with rituals, and then coffee houses, first one opened in Istanbul. Coffee we know today is about the culture, much more than beans. Also coffee is seen as catalyst of enlightenment in Europe, because of socializing between different classes.

I can't deny the contribution of the Ottomans for some good things but you forgot to tell some realities. The Sultans where very far from real life, living in palaces .While people where very poor, uneducated and didn't know what it was to be a Turk.Sultans were surronded just by elits origins Greek,Jew or Armenian.Cause of their ambition they expanded to much, gave the control to non Turks, instead of investing to develop the country and citizen they spend all sources for wars without any anxiety. While they were living uneconomical in luxury far from people poverty and misery they became an easy prey for ennemy.Fortunately the nation had the chance that a man like Mustafa Kemal had the courage to release the contry a founded the replublic of a modern Türkiye.

    Dear Professor,
This video of yours, if accompanied by a Turkish translation, would likely break viewership records in Turkey, especially among supporters of the Islamist and neo-Ottomanist ruling party (AKP) as well as ultranationalists. It is a work of flattery toward the Ottomans, highlighting a carefully selected dozen or so positive aspects of the Ottoman cultural legacy.
In my view, the title of your book, A Cultural Legacy, seems strategically chosen to justify overlooking entirely hundreds of “unpleasant” cases, events, and governmental or social practices that were integral to the Ottoman Empire’s 600-year-long tumultuous history. These neglected aspects had a profound impact on the field of cultural field/life of the country, yet they are conspicuously absent from your analysis.
I must address two significant distortions or inaccuracies in your work. First, while it is true that meritocracy was a commendable standard in the Ottoman Empire for advancing within the government, it was by no means the sole or primary standard. The entrenched and widespread system of bribery (rüşvet) was equally influential and frequently employed.
Second, you claim that "the sultans were trilingual, highly educated, and sophisticated." Wow! This assertion might hold true for some sultans of the Classical Period, but it fails to consider the devastating effects of the later practice of confining crown princes (şehzade) in the "kafes (cage)" within the palace. Completely isolated from the outside world, sometimes for decades, these future rulers often emerged devoid of sophistication, plagued by ignorance, and, in some cases, mentally unwell.
I hope these remarks show the need for a more balanced approach to understanding the true nature of Osmanlı's cultural legacy that you glorify using selected material.
