      George Oldfield was an arrogant prejudiced fool. The fact that the lot of them believed prostitutes deserved what they got and that ‘innocent girls’ were dragged into it was despicable. Watch ‘The Long Shadow’ a 2023 ITV drama series, it redresses the balance very well.

    • @shakunkothari2272
      @shakunkothari2272 3 месяца назад +6

      This series showed Oldfield in a sympathetic light, but in reality he himself made bad calls along with the detectives under him and working with him. As good as this series was, "The Long Shadow" gives a more realistic viewpoint.

    • @ECVanPuz
      @ECVanPuz 2 месяца назад

      Oldfield was the wrong officer for the enquiry. 1977, flying high on the success of the unlawful conviction of Judith Ward for the M62 coach bombing, Gregory obviously thought he was the man for the situation ! Huge mistake, as were numerous errors of judgement made by Oldfield, notably his absolute belief in the hoax tape from Sunderland. Cost more women their lives.

    • @ECVanPuz
      @ECVanPuz 2 месяца назад

      Oldfield was not the man for the Ripper enquiry. Thought he knew better since in 1977 he was flying high from the conviction of Judith Ward for the M62 coach bombing (quoshed after Oldfield's death, himself being severely criticised by the judge for keeping evidence from the defense). Bad decisions were made. The abandon of the type enquiry, the 5 pound note lead, and of course the belief in the Wearside hoaxer. Cost the lives of more women.

      In a cold case review they decided to retest the envelopes used to send the tapes. Since it was many years later and advancements such as The national DNA Offender database was now available they had a potential new avenue to investigate.
      Turns out John Humble had been arrested in the years after the hoax and had subsequently given a DNA swab.
      All because one attention seeking idiot wanted to toy with the police, an entire investigation shifted away from their prime suspect and moved to a completely wrong area of the country. Thus it was reflected in his sentence that even though he never intended for people to get hurt, his actions meant that they did and a golden opportunity to save lives and catch a serial killer was missed.

      They did find him in 2005, one of the junior detectives who had worked the case in the 70s became the chief inspector for West Yorkshire, and he reopened the cold case. They examined the letters for DNA, and found a match to a man who’d been arrested in the 2000s for a drunk and disorderly charge. He got sent to prison for eight years, and I believe he died behind bars.

      Primarily, because I don't believe that human beings possess the immutable gift of being able to fairly pass judgment on *_other_* human beings.
      Police may serve a better purpose by integrating immunity against the possibility of criminal activity occurring, before it starts.
      For those enthusiastic about the idea of nullifying the possibility of crime - such as myself - I'd happily do this for free (entirely at my own leisure of course).
      I have several other mechanisms that can be resorted to to establish near perfect justice as possible on Earth, that isn't in any way a risk to anybody as well.

      Suppose it was your husband being questioned... would you *_really_* be ready to believe the worst of the worst about him???
      Or what if it was your mother being persistently questioned? Maybe that's a more touching question...
