A lot of transmissions adapt over time to allow for wear and driving style. I completely flushed my ATF and for that day and maybe the day after it could be really rough but it adapted to the new fluid
Hi Joel. Great vid again. I used to be a mechanic so my comments might help you with the BM Did the garage pull any fault codes out of the transmission, engine etc modules? These will be crucial to any diagnostics. You should do a reset of the transmission adaptions via the BMW dealer software now you gave changed the fluid and filter. There is a chat way of doing it by turning on the ignition with your foot all the way down on the accelerator pedal and hold for 30 seconds. Then turn the ignition off first and then take foot off of pedal. This will put the transmission into a reset mode and it will learn your driving habits. You should do this technique in any auto car you buy so it will learn your driving style rather than you using the previous owners style that the modules have learned. Hope this helps.
Did you do it according to service schedule or "belated"? I don't buy those super long intervals, e.g. 120.000 miles or so, so I am doing it after ca 1/3 or that. Cheaper than a new trans ;)

I've taken my 760Li on the stelvio pass the car is to long to drive round most of the turns without taking both sides of the road, I've done the alps and was impressed by how well it did the passes.
If you had the fluid changed through the filter housing it only amounts to approx 50% change as there is loads left in the torque converter. That has now mixed and giving a better drive. A full or another partial change is the best after frying the oil on a track
Joel I have had a few of these e65s including the 760LI and that ZF gearbox is Bomb proof and when these go in with problems people get told it’s a gearbox rebuild / replace etc which is mostly bollox. I noticed they serviced your gearbox but never dropped the mechatronic unit out as above that there are a couple of vital plastic seals which need replaced and always fail. One in particular a rectangular shape one is always the cause for limp mode where the gearbox won’t change gears correctly . You will get a warning of “monitoring clutch A” just replace them of it does it. High revs between gears is the mechatronic unit itself
On my 760 I had the 3 tube seals and the bridge seal replaced when I had my transmission serviced. The bridge seal had actually got so brittle it had cracked, causing occasion flaring.

Hi Joel A300£ for transmission doesn't sound bad for that car. I spoke last week with bmw in Basingstoke where i live and they said that is life time transmission and doesn't need anything. from your video I can see that's incorrect. The main question is when I should do it. ZF gear box 4 years old 75k on the clock. Might be worth having a chat with that garage prices look reasonable as I avoid main dealers ridiculous rates.
Bro at the very least you should do your own pollen filters and oil changes. The sooner you start the sooner you can save money for bigger jobs for the garage to take on. You'll start at some point, I just suggest you do so sooner than later. Plus, it's actually enjoyable.
My 3 series also had some issues with the gearbox. After oil change had to drive for a while when everything was gone and now drives decent enough :)))
If you want to properly service the transmission you need to change the fluid again because half of the fluid is in the torque convertor and transmission cooler .
When the oil is contaminated like that it will stop disolving contaminates which can plug up or restrict movements of valves, couldve been his problem. After driving it with new oil for a while it may dissolve the rest of contaminates throughout the system
Great Video Joel, ATF is a very good cleaner, it will take a few cycles to flush out the torque convertor, and remove any crud thats around the system & valve bodies. The filter is doing its job by catching the muck. If you can regularly change the fluid, it will keep serving you.

When changing the automatic gearbox oil it is not enough let it slip and then put the new one... There has to be injected new oil to clean and take off the oil from the parts that cannot be removed by gravity. Then new oil is injected and everything closed. 💪🏼

Sounds like a typical e65 e66 bmw. Mine sat around more than it was driven which is even more costly than a daily driver. Good luck with the v12 space ship. 😎
You did well on the tyre price.. my staggered 19” Bridgestone Turanzo tyres, 245/40 & 275/35 I had recently fitted on my 630i sport cost £900. These cars are not cheap.. Though saying that, I have just had delivered some new 20” VEEMANN VC7 alloys delivered. I’m looking forward to fitting them.. :)
Looks like you got away with the gearbox issue. I would still monitor the box temperatures while driving with a scan tool The next stage for the transmission is to bring down the valve body and replace the sleeves. (there are a few rubber seals that go bad between the valve body and the rest of the gearbox). They probably should have done that. If that does not work then you need a rebuilt valve body. The actual box is fairly strong unless it's allowed to slip while driving due to another fault.
I would have suspected that the main problem that caused the overheating would be the transmission. I have a 2007 E 87 1 series that gave me the same problem especially when I was driving up a hill and had to change to gears. The automatic trans share the same cooling system as the engine so since my trans had not had a trans oil change since the beginning it was making the car lethargic, friction made the trans hot. Once I had the oil trans oil changed the car was back to silky smooth driving. Before I changed the oil I actually drove the car 1480 Kilometers to Botswana and back and she took the trip like a man. Overheating a couple of times on my way back but I would blast the heater up and open my windows and I managed to get home.
I had our tansmission oil changed 3 times and then it fixed similar issue :) So something you might have to do again, reason is of course because it was not done in such a long time
You mentioned misfires/lumpiness that's almost one of the worst things about the 760. It's very hard to diagnose misfires on these engines as there are so many things that can cause that. I do have to say my 760 car runs far better on premium fuel. It has a hesitation on 95 octane fuel which can be quite bad with some fuels (for example Shell 95 is ok and Tesco 95 is no so good). I use Tesco 99 octane in mine as it's cheaper than Shell Vpower and the car runs the same as the Vpower.
How about getting hold of a F01 760Li and G12 M760Li, with your E65 and comparing them to each other and see how far have they come and comfort, noise levels and build quality etc

Joel, I’ve seen before on e65 bmws and e60, e90 have the same gearbox fault as kinda what your having. Turned out to be the vehicle torque converter clutch pressures, around 70-60mph, you can get fluctuations in the rpm, or when driving hard it judders, but also when those models first came out we used to see a lot of mechatronic units play up which used to be covered under the bmw warranty when they were first released. Hope this can be some help 👍 Ryan 😎
Probably best to bring it to the garage first, before spending the 700 bob on tyres. Let them see the symptoms in a direct way, without changing any particulars.

It does have a torque converter. It’s the old ZF 6 speed slushmatic
Your favourite thing on the 8 series ISN'T the pop-up headlamps?!
I just realised that the wipers goes from right to left. Is that normal or has the car been converted from a LHD to RHD?
Great video Joel. Keep the content coming 👌👌
I think we've all tried to self diagnose our cars and convince ourselves it's just a loose hose when in fact its normally something catastrophically expensive! It's coming Joel....!
Tough life being a car guy. Endless optimism and endless repair bills.
I feel you
Are you planning anything for a 50k special?
You should go to some car meets in the 7 series with Adam C. That would make a very interesting video
@@AnyoneSeenMikeHunt hell no lots of knowledge around to help/advies like brothers.
Change the transmission fluid again withm fully synthetic keeping the filter
The wheels look like those found on the e34 m5, known as 'throwing stars'
Pretty sure they are. The star is just a cover as well. Behind the cover is a basic 5 spoke alloy wheel.
@@TheM5Dog Dont know if I would call them basic, its a double spoke with various holes in the center. They are quite high tech for their time.
@@GoldenCroc perhaps basic was too basic a word, the important bit was the fact that they are 5 spokes behind the throwing star cover I guess.
@@TheM5Dog Indeed or ten spoke if you look at it that way, though I prefer to call it a 5 spoke "double spoke".
Hope this can be some help 👍
Ryan 😎
Love the sounds of the wiper blades🤣🤣 interesting video nice one.👍👍
They were winding me up so much 😂
All the sensors in these BMW’s from this era, man my 645Ci is giving me headaches all day
Probably best to bring it to the garage first, before spending the 700 bob on tyres. Let them see the symptoms in a direct way, without changing any particulars.
Is there such a thing as an air con machine lmfao.....na mate we fill up the aircon with a straw
When I could afford to buy one of these and have the money, I actually went to look at one that was really beautiful, believe it or not, at 6 foot six I couldn’t fit into it and drive it comfortably… Can you imagine your dream car and being able to afford it, and it being too small for you to drive on a day-to-day basis
In which parts was it too small for you?
Mate you obviously hadn't adjusted the seat properly. I'm 6"7 and daily an E65 and it's the roomiest car I've ever had.
@@warrengeew You may be correct, but I tried a good fiddle around along with the owner it was a great deal shorter than me and it didn’t seem to work… Glad you’ve got one, fit and are happy with it… to be honest with you, with what’s happened to me in the past few years, I would’ve had either had to get rid of it, more heartbreaking, or it would’ve been written off as my Saab was… Beautiful cars
@@Ade2bee find that really strange mate, I've never had a problem and im a big lad too. You can pick them up cheap but they don't look that good. I'd try go 07-08 sport if you can, best looking ones.
drag racing would be something fun to watch, not sure what to do it against but cant goo wrong with that
Well done Great video. you could go round the Top gear test track .
Track days in cruisers is not a good idea. Also preventive maintenance by a competent mechanic IS a good idea.
I would like to know how you can afford to insure all your cars being so young??
I have just brought number 53 off the production line. Renault Avantime 3.0v6
Your issue is the valve body solenoids. A weak spot on this ZF transmission. ZF do a kit for all 6 solenoids, that will fix your issue,
Well I am impressed haha, my E65 has not been as kind to me! Keep up the great content!
What issues have you had with it?
@@agen1man had it around 2 years, daily driver, so far new radiator, all external cooling hoses, temp sensor which is the repairs, and then general works 2 Michelin pilot sport 4s 275/40/19 rears, front dics, pads, sensors, arms, battery, battery reset, oil change, air filters, cabin filters, spark plugs, air tyre pressure sensor, seat belt sensor and steering angle sensor!
Don't mind the cost of the Pilot Sport 4S, they are the best tyres and I wouldn't put anything else under my car after having them for the past 4 years
also 69th like yeet
Yep, pilot sports are great all rounders, especially impressive in the wet
Forged engine from top to bottom, twin turbos, suspension it would make great power like 850 still keeping it a luxury cruiser meanwhile u cant go to Germany u get busy with that so when things die down a bit u have a farrari beater
How about tacking the BMW from England to the Alpes ,and make a video out of that
When doing a transmission service its always good to also change the mechatronic sleves, that does allot of good usually. And driving outside of the UK is not as bad as it was during peak covid, definitely easier after being double vaxed, would be good to see her on the bahn!
Change the wiper blades and do the tracking
Hi, love the videos been watching them loads, love your Scotland to London one, I have a 2008 BMW 520D and it isn’t that great, where the injector sits is full of fuel and there is damp in the boot, where is RMB located plz, keep up the great content mate
They are located in a village called Hook. It is junction 5 off M3
£700 well spent. Much prefer vlogs on your own motors. Just seems more ‘real’.
Thanks Keith
It's well worth removing the valvebody to replace the bridge seal and mechatronic sleeves when servicing the transmission. I made a full video when I did mine: ruclips.net/video/yAjVsJHS65E/видео.html
Very common problem for the bridge seal to crack (mine was) and can cause shifting issues!
6.5k v12....need the titanium exhaust for that f1 sound.
8:34 the subtitles say [Music] perfectly describes it
Do a build... V12 BMW X5 lemans replica?
As you say the v12 is quick so how about racing something, like a parcel or train to a destination. Like a long commute fastest to Scotland u vs plane
I would have changed the mechatronic rubbers while doing the gearbox service good video's though Joel 👍
Get an XHP Map on the box mate
Nobody I can find that will do it for this car
Your engine oil looked bad and good. The bad is the color means that there is a lot of something in the oil. The good news is what ever it was, it remained in suspension. I would recommend and be very interested in having your engine oil analyzed. It may tell you where your oil contaminants are coming from and to what degree.
