  • In this final episode we see that the upper and lower lock gates to Bottom Lock No.1 have been removed and replaced with new gates from the Canal and River Trust's Stanley Ferry Workshop and scaffolding has been set up within the four lock staircase flight for chamber repairs to be carried out.
In the second part of the film, we get a closer look at the empty lock pounds and gain an understanding of how they work when using the red and white coloured ground paddles, the rule being that red must always be operated first and then white. NB Please note I wrongly refer to side pounds, this reference should be to ponds. Pounds are directly connected to the canal whereas the ponds are not.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your 3-part series about Watford locks Alan, thank you. You presented the procedure and work involved so clearly, with excellent editing as usual... fascinating the view of the staircase from above. Obviously I was so sad and sorry when you shared about the theft from your campervan - I know well the feeling of material loss but more painfully the feeling of violation of ones personal space and privacy. I really hope you’ve manage to come to terms with it by now, and have moved on... although it was so good to see your smile return even after just a week! Best regards, Phil

Thanks Phil, I'm glad you enjoyed watching. It is devastating to have your personal space invaded and it does take a while to get over it. I have had previous problems in the work place, so it wasn't the first time and I have had cars stolen and recovered but it is still a big shock. Cheers Alan

Nice to know the locks are well maintained, seeing they get good … "pounding" all year long.

Please tell me they are going to do something about the sediment. Maybe give all the men standing around a shovel.

Thanks. Upload times vary enormously, so I started this late last night and happened to wake in the early hours to find it was ready, so published and went back to bed!

Hi Alan If you wanted to perhaps a drone could take awkward shots providing you get the permission . Cheers

Hi Ramsey. One could get some lovely shots with a drone but as I don't have one it won't be me, nice idea though. All the best

I'm not really sure about that, I expect it's just left at the bottom of the water. All the best.
