Linux and Mac OS need separate updates from Windows because the operating systems are designed differently. It is entirely possible that it could’ve happened to those operating systems too. A few months ago, the XZ back door on Linux was caught before it had the opportunity to cripple the whole world’s computing infrastructure. It’s a bit of a rabbit hole but worth a read.
