      Garmin fenix 5. I’ve use it 2 years with charging every 8 days....till v.21 firmware update, and now it’s like 2 days with only 1 training, without bluetooth 🤬 And garmin doesn’t allow to go back to previous version...so, no.

      @@kosmologic6007 Uh yeah Fenix 5 is an outdated model for over 4 years now lmao. It's not a Rolex or Omega meant to last your lifetime. They're expensive throwaway watches that will give you 2 or 3 good years before they are outdated and need to be replaced. That's the downfall to a smartwatch 🤷‍♂️

    On 8k, each time I tried my galaxy watch 3 came on par with my Fenix 5 in terms of distance. Let us not forget that Civilian GPS has at best 10 meters of accuracy, even Apple! Same for average speed, both watches were on par. For some reason, the instant speed is more erratic, especially at low speed. As for the optical HR sensor, well, it is...optical with all its limitations, even when running but this is true for Fenix and Apple too. That is why the impossibility to pair an external HR monitor in BT (such as the Polar H10) is a big, big, drawback, the biggest I would say (the Sporty watch face is not satisfactory and is only a poor work around to my mind). But when the optical sensor works, I never noticed that it was monitoring only every 10 seconds, on the contrary I find it more responsive than the one on the Fenix 5, which is normal considering the Garmin was released 3 years ago. For the advanced metrics, Great, Good, etc... are not precise, I agree but the watch gives you a bracket of values: for instance great contact time in my case is between 100 and 160ms and you can have more precision by looking at the contact time graph on Samsung health. So, the watch gives you more precision. Overall, I agree that if you are interested in or need very detailed running metrics then you should go with a Polar or Garmin instead. Personally, I moved away from Garmin because their retail prices started to become a real joke especially compared to the overall quality of their products (a 935 that lasts only 2 years is a rip-off).

      I also have the Galaxy Watch 3 and have noticed no issues with the heart rate sensor. As long as the watch is worn correctly it is perfectly accurate and I use this along with my Honor GS Pro, which has Garmin Metrics via first beat and is also pretty accurate also and they both show similar heart rates after my run along with vo2max results amongst other sporting metrics.

    I’m missing a comparison to the other devices in the same price range and with similar feature-set and a recommendation based on that. You described it pretty much in isolation from everything else.

  • @tcoopdeville776

    you hit the nail on the head with your last statement. I have the Galaxy watch 3 and use it primarily as a smart watch to accompany my phone. When I want to work out I use my Garmin 235. Having the galaxy watch is great when i go for a long walk or hike and happen to have it on. But when I want to track workouts for accuracy.. GARMIN!

  • @caseyjones466

    Thank you so much for verifying my suspicion. I had the Galaxy Active 2 which was horrible for fitness tracking, and just terrible in general. Especially battery life. I was going to hold out for the Galaxy 3, but took your suggestion and bought the Coros Pace 2 instead. Couldn't be happier!!! Fitness tracking is amazing and the battery life? Wow!! I received mine a week ago with 75% battery from the factory. I wore it for a week and just charged it yesterday and it was still at 19%!!! I couldn't get more than a day out of my Active 2. Thank you so much for your reviews and your spot on suggestion! BTW, I read you personally wear a Polar H10, so I found one used last week and love it as well. Keep up the good work!

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  3 года назад +3

      The battery life is just crazy good on COROS watches. I'm glad you're happy with it. Yup, the Polar H10 and the HRM Pro are usually my go-to chest heart rate straps. Thanks so much!

  • @johnmanley4528

    Great job, Des! Looks like another mixed bag for Samsung. The rotating dial and screen look amazing. But, it’s disappointing that it still has no ability to pair with external HR straps. And, no one else has all those individual gym exercises. They should just have one strength training profile. It seems like a bother to cycle through each one at the gym. Let’s get onto the Forerunner 655 and the Vantage V2 then!

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  3 года назад +6

      There’s also a generic weight training profile, but you’re right, it requires a good bit of interaction with the device. It was better but there’s still lots of room for improvement. Thanks John!

    Just ordered a GW4 Classic and am really hoping they improved on some of the accuracy from last generation. I will definitely do some comparisons with my Garmin to see.
    Hope you review the GW4 / Classic as well, definitely very useful to have a fitness focused review rather than most general tech reviews

    • @cstavaru
      @cstavaru 3 года назад +1

      I hate to say it but the GW4 is not any better. I have it for a week and I wore it on the left wrist while simultaneously wearing my Garmin Vivoactive 4 on the right wrist. I did multiple weight training workouts and it basically only tracks around 15% of the workout time (not even 20%), the rest is "unreliable data". The Garmin tracked the full workouts perfectly. There is no improvement in heart rate monitoring and this invalidates most health metrics offered by the smartwatch.

    Great review ... I received this watch for Christmas ... after several inconsistent reading, I decided to return it. I ended up returning my vivoactive 4 in for a venu and after 2 weeks of wearing the venu, i decided to trade the venu in for a galaxy watch 3. At the end of the day, the garmin does a lot of things really well, but i find the UI, the app and the overal vibe of the watch a bit boring. It's just not a really sexy device, and feels a tad sluggish.
    Which is a shame , because I know the Samsung underperforms in some categories, and the garmin is really good at sports, but i just like the design of both the software and the hardware a bit more. Then again, i just want a nice watch that I can use to track my walks, weightlifting and cycling, and Samsung seems ok enough for my usecases.
    All in all, the garmin venu is probably the better watch pound for pound, but as far as a "lifestyle product" goes, i stopped enjoying the aesthetics of it in less than a week, and will have to settle for better looks with worse features.
    A matter of whatever you prioritize I guess 🤤

    • @JasperStaal86
      @JasperStaal86 3 года назад

      @Cajunwelder on IG yeah Ive been really content with the gw3 so far. It's as fun device. Only thing I miss is the garmins weight training app, i cant find a way to create my own gym routines. Apart from that, the watch is amazing, and beautiful to look at!

    • @devrerffs
      @devrerffs 3 года назад

      Same here. I used garmin vivoactive 4 side by side with galaxy watch active 2 for a week. They allways agreed on distance, avg and max heartrate so I figured the samsung was good enough for me. I sometimes regret my decision while exercising though.
      The frustrating thing is it would take so little resources for samaung to make it a much better fitness watch. Like more sport profiles and native support for external heart rate. It would take 1 samsung devoloper a couple of hours to integrate

    • @cstavaru
      @cstavaru 3 года назад

      As for myself, I wanted to replace my Vivoactive 4 with TicWatch Pro 3 then with Galaxy Watch 4 being lured by the "full smartwatch" thing, I have purchased both but there is so much to be missed (battery life, properly readable always-on display, heart rate accuracy which affects all the other health metrics) that I kept returning any contender...I will probably end up getting the Vivoactive 5 or Fenix 7.

I found you in a random search while attempting to learn a little bit more about a couple different smart watches and I found your format and pace to be best. I loved my old Samsung's ability to know I was running without having to start any app on the watch, but I just can't get away from the feeling that the Fenix remains the king. I want to be totally upset but your right so of my runs have been off. I use the Lte and I’ve run the same track for year’s so I know where a mile stops and start. It does show me in buildings at times it’s not a hardware problem it’s a software issue coming from a programmer view. On the other hand my heart rate works perfectly I test it every workout to make sure that I’m getting the same heart rate and calories as the equipment says. But using the circuit tracking that’s when I get incorrect calories, but the heart rate sensor is spot on again software issues. My ECG is turned on so that may be the difference. I’ve never watch a Apple Watch video because I’m not buying an iPhone to get a watch, so like you dragged Samsung for ECG be sure to drag Apple Watch for not even paring that’s locking out. Still a good video I was just hoping it scored better coming from a gear sport to a watch 3 your video was what I was waiting on maybe next year 😞

    I have the LTE version of this watch. The first one overheated when I was just making a phone call. It went into airplane mode to cool down. The carrier replaced it. On the new watch, I signed up for Spotify and downloaded an album. Then I went outside to exercise. I paired it with my Google Pixel Buds. The music was awesome. I started the GPS/Heart tracker and began working out. Roughly 5-10 mins into it, the watch over heated. I live in TX however, the temp outside was 67 degrees. I called the carrier and they got in touch with Samsung. Now Samsung wants me to mail it in for them to review it. They say this shouldn't be happening. I did a Google search and found that the Active 2 and Watch 3 both have overheating issues. There is even a thread on Samsung's website (Google it). Over 1200 complaints of over heating and a 1.3 of 5 star review.
    I love the watch, but if I cannot use it to make calls or fitness then what is the point? For now, I went back to my Apple watch and waiting on Samsung to see what they say.

My Apple watch is just more versatile. also the heart shape fitness tracker with the pink really bothered me as a man and you cant change the colors. galaxy 3 is to bulky and i cant sleep with it. Active 2 was sleek but again not as powerful as my apple watch. sleep functions are better with apple watch. Galaxy active watches are the key to beating apple watch but they have to give it power 💪 to compete. Apple watch has better fitness accuracy in my runs outside. thanks again

I was wondering if you tried any third-party apps on the watch to capture your data (MapMyRun, Strava, or Endomondo) and, if so, if you saw any differences. Unfortunately I haven't had great luck with Samsung watches in regards to heart rate accuracy over the course of testing 4-5 models over the years. Currently testing the Watch4 and it's roughly the same story.

    I have the original Galaxy Watch (46mm) that I bought used on eBay for $68.. battery life is over a week for me but I just use it as a watch, text messages and step counter basically. It automatically starts recording if it detects I am 'working out' which, for me, is walking at work.
    I see no reason to 'upgrade' as all the new watches have abysmal battery life. I wear mine just for work, after 4 days I was at 49% battery life.

    Great review Des. Would you consider doing a review of the actual software for watch manufacturers? I've moved from Fitbit to Garmin and I found the software, from a lifestyle point of view, a bit of a let down. I would be a happy bunny if I could use my Garmin watch with the Fitbit software. It might be a minefield but this not often explored in detail.
    Keep up the good work!

    Hi Des, really enjoying your work! Super informative and in-depth.
    I've only just started looking into getting a smartwatch for fitness and one of the things I'm struggling to keep up with is how these watches stack up against alternatives, and whether something new has come along that I might have missed. I came to your channel to find out about the Fitbit Sense, but now I'm waiting to see how the Apple Watch 6 stacks up fitness-wise vs the Garmin Venu... I get that scoring isn't really helpful but do you have anywhere you keep a list of your recommended devices as they come along during the year?

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  3 года назад +1

      It's tough to actually rank them since every company does something really well. For heart rate, it's the Apple Watch Series 4/5/6/SE; for GPS I'd give it to Garmin; for sleep tracking, a Fitbit; battery life: COROS. I tend to like the Apple Watches though as a nice balance - the only big issue being the battery life. Thanks so much!

    Any chance you would/could test the completely new Garmin D2 Air? For me it seems like a Venu with a bit of more features.. but then again this one seems like active2 with a bit less ram and rom.. looking at every smartwatches for the time being, really doesn't know what to go for. But I'm taking the ATPL, so the more affordable (in the lineup) d2 air is for me somewhat appealing! Very difficult to find any reviews on it atm though.

    Great content, man! I'm deciding whether to try this samsung watch 3, though I have an iPhone, or to buy the much more expensive apple watch. I currently use Nike run club app with my phone, but the thing is I don't want to bring my phone when running. I'm assuming all these data you collected was without your phone around, right? Otherwise, I don't really think I gain much by buying a smartwatch.

      Thanks! The Apple Watch SE is currently less than the Samsung Watch 3, plus it’s a much better device with an iPhone as a smartwatch and is far superior to the Samsung when it comes to fitness.
