Norm always sounded like he was rambling incoherently, but he was actually a comic who agonized over every work, trying to get the joke just perfect. His schtick was the juxtoposition of incoherence and perfection. That's why he was considered a comic's comic.
What I love about norm is that the punchline is never as good as the buildup which itself kind of becomes a meta punchline
I appreciate that maddy here gets the subtle humor of norm 😊

Norm told a "Dirty Johnny" joke on Stern a few years ago, The set-up lasted at least 15 minutes - and then the joke went absolutely nowhere! It was the funniest thing I ever heard. 😅

I've gone down hours-long rabbit holes of his comedy and appearances on talk shows. Him with Conan and David Letterman is so good. It's an odd sense of humor where he pretends to be stupid but he's often times the smartest person in the room.

I remember a story some guy whose name I can't remember told on a podcast about a time he and norm got in an elevator and some guys were discussing some really complex mathematical stuff and he says norm just started talking to them about it like it was some kind of small talk. He also graduated from high school at 14 and got into uni at 16 and I remember on his book club page he would recommend some math books from time to time.

The moth joke is the epitome of Norm. He works Dosteyevsky and other literary references in this loooong joke just to have a true groaner of a punch line. That was the joke - that the punchline was sooo bad. He trusted his audience to be smart enough to get it. It wasn't about the joke, it was about setting up the audience. Norm was a genius.
i always noticed how many times he said "baby dolphins" that really sets up the punchline. lol
Gotta try out Norm’s “professor of logic” & “moth” jokes both on late night shows with similar set up and delivery styles.

@@DarthLetalis --Funny thing is that he had cancer for about ten years and almost nobody knew. He kept it a secret and so when he passed people were shocked, including some of his closest friends. So a lot of people were in the same boat as you. 11

Norm was a wild man lol. He knew exactly what he was doing. Dude got more fun out of making "dad jokes" and make the punch lines into a twist ending lol. He did not care if the audience laughed ....he found it amusing and that was enough lol.

As well thought out and calculated as his jokes were, I always wonder in this case if he didn't off up the name and then just ran with it. He was smart enough to have gone either way - perhaps calculated, knowing Conan would bite and set up the joke, or fully accidental & just turning it into part of the bigger joke. He was an utterly brilliant comedic mind.

If you go over the rainbow bridge from Niagara Falls Ny into Niagara Falls Ontario. Sea world is about 15-30 minutes over the border.
