So pretty much the only difference that really is making a difference out of the box for power is bigger turbo and more fuel. Got it, the n55 basically is the same block as an n54 it can handle as much, forged cranks are overrated, unless your running road course. And the exhaust cam has a more aggressive profile. The n55 in my opinion if it had a closed deck we literally be talking apples to oranges. I wouldn’t say the n54 was more capable I’d say more reckless, it’s like the b58 of course if you add more boost you get more power. At the time people just didn’t feel like dropping everything they had in their n54s and start over so the aftermarket didn’t move either. An engine is an engine air fuel spark, what’s more important is the person who owns it, and fyi b58tu hpfp retrofit on the n55 unlocks another 50 to 65 hp on stock turbo with a good tune
Can you do a B48 vs B58 video? For those on a N55 budget but want the B58 platform does it make sense to buy a b48 car with future plans of doing a b58 swap once you have the funds to buy/build a b58 engine, I believe the b48 cars have the same transmission & all parts are the same minus 2 cylinders… So in theory the swap should be straight forward however I haven’t seen it done before
M235i and OG M2’s have the same forged rods as the S55 (same part numbers). All N55s have cast iron cranks except for the M235i (M135i) and M2 which have a forged crank. All N55s and N54s and S55s have hypereutectic pistons (i.e., not forged).

Vtec - The only two variants of the N55s that came with forged cranks are the N55B30O0 and N55B30T0. So this would be an accurate statement!
