There's actually quite a lot of practical effects in this. The whole bit with Lucy walking past the ruined ship was actually filmed in Africa, and they only had one chance to shoot it since they had to worry about leaving the appropriate tracks in the sand. Likewise, the confrontation in Philly was filmed in an actual repurposed section of a massive junkyard. It's pretty impressive.
I would love to see the VFX breakdowns of these scenes so we can know just how much these “practical” effects were digitally altered. Look, I love an in-camera effect or set piece just like anyone. But the way that people are ONLY rhapsodizing about the “practical” effects in this series seems frankly insulting to the undoubtedly massive work that the VFX teams put into this. I just found an article that claimed that the series relied on practical effects with VFX only serving as a “garnish.” That is a laughable claim in a series like this. Also again, insulting.
