On the one you questioned - yes, he could’ve just thrown it to first. It was a line drive caught in the air so the runner on first HAS to return to first before the ball gets there. However, the second baseman who caught the ball wanted to get the unassisted triple play, which is an incredibly rare feat.

@@DNReacts the unassisted triple play is one of the rarest things in baseball; it's happened 15 times in MLB history (Two of them are since the play where the announcer says it's the 13th.)
For comparison, here are some other rare feats:
Player reaches first base safely, then steals second, third, and then home plate to complete his trip around the bases: 53 times
Walk-off steal of home plate: 35 times
Team losing by 3 runs gets walk-off grand slam: 33 times
Batter hits home run on first pitch of first at-bat of major league career: 31 times
Pitcher achieves a perfect game: 24 times
4 home runs in a game by one player: 18 times
Pitchers hit home runs off each other in the same game: 18* times
There really aren't a lot of things that are rarer that've been done more than once. Examples of those are two grand slams by a single batter in one inning (Fernando Tatis, April 23, 1999 in the 3rd inning) or throwing two complete-game no-hitters in consecutive starts (by Johnny Vander Meer on June 11 and 15, 1938; other than those two games he actually wasn't a very good pitcher. Rookie luck.)
*this one gets an asterisk four of the instances where pitchers hit home runs off each other in the same game involved the 1887 Chicago White Stockings (now known as the Cubs), whose stadium had outer fences that were much closer than normal; in seasons before and after 1887, balls hit over the outfield fence at that park were considered doubles, not home runs, but in 1887 they counted as home runs. Without those four games, this would in fact be rarer than an unassisted triple play.

  • @eli469
    @eli469 Год назад +32

when the ball is caught in the air, all base runners have to tag up, which means they have to touch the base they are at after the ball is caught before they can run to the next base. This allows the unassisted triple play at second because after the ball is caught in the air, he immediately steps on second, giving them the second out, and then either tagging the first base runner or throwing behind him to first to get the last out.

I think what adds to your confusion, is that the base runners are anticipating a hit, so they run before the tag up. In these cases, once the ball is caught, the runners are supposed to go back to the original base. But they can be thrown out, if the ball beats them back to the original base.

    • @33RoyCorpPor

Ya the tag up rules can be confusing, it's a forced out if there's runners behind them, but if they wait to run off their base until the ball is caught (tagging up) they can run for it and it's not a forced (sorry if redundant info)

12:08 He's stopping because the runner that was on second has to "tag up" because the ball was caught. That means that the runner that was on first can't have second base. Two players can't be on the same base.
There is a rule in baseball that says a runner has to "tag up", i.e. touch his base, after the ball is caught out of the air. If the ball hits the ground before the fielder gets it he doesn't have to tag up, but in this case he caught the ball.
    It also applies here:
6:18 He would have to go back to first, because you have to tag up after the ball is caught. If the ball weren't caught but bounced he could continue. No need to tag up if the ball hits the field. 1

I could see the wheels spinning in your head when Damo asked the question and I knew that you would think it through and give him a proper explanation. Well done Nick. ♣ Even your explanation at the end where you explained that last complicated triple play was correct. The player could have retreated back to first base and been safe, but probably thought that there was enough chaos and confusion going on that he could essential steal second. And got caught. 15:00 Hey DNReacts, if you rewatch carefully, that hit actually hit the ground, so when the second baseman touched his base, that was the first out (the runner from first base).
Then they caught the runner from second base in a run-down (between 2nd and 3rd) for the second out.
The 3rd out was actually the hitter who was trying to stretch towards second base, who either A) couldn't fully commit because the runner between 2nd and 3rd might have returned to second base, or B) simply didn't have enough time to get to second before the other runner was tagged out.
    Great reaction!

In the fifth inning, with runners at 1st and 2nd base, "Wamby" caught a line drive by Clarence Mitchell, stepped on 2nd base to retire the unsuspecting runner from 2nd, and tagged the unfortunate runner from 1st. Earlier, in the first inning, Wambsganss scored as runner in the first grand slam homerun in World Series history, by Elmer Smith.

According to Baseball Almanac, in 1913, there was a triple play that they have scored as a 6-2-5-1-5-4-5-6-5-7 triple play. So, that's shortstop to catcher to third base to pitcher to third base to second base to third base to shortstop to third base to left field. I wish they had that on film. I'm wondering how the pitcher and left fielder were involved. A crazy run down for the final out?

The unassisted triple play is very rare, as others have mentioned. Just about all of them are line drives to 2B where he catches the ball, tags second, then tags the runner from first.
I actually had one as a kid growing up. Playing second base, line drive up the middle, diving catch, I landed about 3 feet from second base. The second base runner saw me catch it and was heading back to the bag. I crawled/dived, touching the bag with my glove just before he got back. The first base runner was running with his head down and I tagged him when he got to me a couple of seconds after the second out. It's crazy b/c it's over before you even know what's going on. It's all instinct.

  • @Wyrmwould
    @Wyrmwould Год назад

On the phrase "around the diamond," it is customary for a catcher to throw the ball to the third baseman on a strikeout. The third baseman then throws it to the second baseman, who throws it to the shortstop, who throws it to the first baseman, who throws it to the pitcher. It doesn't have to be that pattern exactly, but the point is to celebrate the strikeout (or rub it in) by throwing the ball around the diamond. We call this throwing the ball "around the horn" for some reason. I don't actually know where that came from, but maybe it came from cowboys playing rounders on the ranch where there were animals with horns (or maybe saddles with horns). There is probably a video out there explaining the origin of obscure baseball terms.

On the confusing one. When the SS catched the line drive, the runner on first has to get back on 1st 'cause he could not leave the base, but realising he would'nt have any chance to do it, he just freezed and let the SS touch him. So to make it clear. 1) SS catch takes the batter out. 2) SS touching the 2nd base cuts the runner from second to third. 3) SS touching the runner from first got him out also. Triple play. Baseball is a fascinating game when well played. One of the greatest strategic game. Hi from Canada

12:43 since the ball was caught in the air, you have to tag the base after the catch before leaving. They had a hit and run on it looks like where both runners went on contact. So the catch is one out, stepping on second is an out for the runner that was on second as he hasn’t tagged the bag and then tagging the player that was on first or throwing to the first baseman to touch the bag is the third.
Since he was almost to second he realized he couldn’t possibly beat a throw back and basically became a sitting duck.

The thing about that one triple play you guys were trying to come to terms with in you head....the big deal was the fact that it was an "unassisted" triple play. That means that the one offensive player made all the plays himself. He caught the ball, getting the batter out. He tagged second base, which caused the player who was on second and chose to run to 3rd prematurely out. Plus, he physically tagged the runner who left 1st base prematurely out. Typically the second base player throws the ball back to 1st base and that player tags the runner out. But in this play, the man covering 2nd caused each of the 3 outs himself, which, as the announcer mentioned, has only happened about 13 times in baseball history.

5-4-3 triple play is call "Around the Horn" On your question about tagging the runner coming down from first, Yes he could get the out throwing back to first since the runner hadn't "tagged up" after the initial catch of the line drive. However it wouldn't be an unassisted triple play, and tagging an unprotected offensive player is always an out, so, if he's right there....... FYI the Pitcher/Batter contest at 6:55 is one of the legendary contests, 6' 10" (2.08m) power pitcher Randy "The Big Unit" Johnson against Mark McGwire, 6' 5" (1.96m) power hitter of renown - your question of what was the player on second doing? You always coach, even little kids to watch the play, and if the play is on the runner ahead of you you try to steal an extra base from behind hoping the defensive team isn't paying attention to you. It works two out of three times, more in lower levels of ball.

In a run-down situation, if everyone does everything right, the runner in the rundown should eventually be out. So, as the offensive team, you assume the out.
So, the guy stuck in the rundown is supposed to take as long as possible to get tagged out. The trailing runner or runners are supposed to take advantage of the time to advance to the next base.
Sometimes this even distracts the defense and they botch the rundown.

in the last one, runner on first and second, on a ball hit on the ground they have to run. The ball hit the ground before the second baseman caught it (so no one out), he flipped it to the shortstop who touched second base (which forced out the runner from first), and then threw it to third base, catching the runner from second base in-between bags. Since the runner from first was out, the runner in between second and third could now go back to second, which is why he started going back and forth, and got caught in a rundown. He got tagged out (second out), and by that time the batter who hit the ball had gotten to first, and was trying to go to second, and they picked him off going to second.(so the batter was actually the third out).
The numerical scoring for that would be a nightmare... I think it is a 4-6-6-5cs-3-4cs TP

Here is some terminology: the ball thrown to 3rd, then to 2nd then to 1st is called "around the horn".
At 7:50 when a runner is trapped between bases (the ball is passed around in a loop), he is trapped in a "pickle" and also called a "rundown"

10:13: It's a good point that the runner who tried to score may have thought there was already one out. If there had been, then he's safe to run when the throw goes to first: either it's an out at first, ending the inning, or the ball will get away and he'll have time to score.

  • @Jay_Force_One

I heard you mention it a couple of times. Triple Plays are extremely rare on their own as the circumstances needed are so situational, but Triple Plays are almost always a 5-4-3 (where they throw 3,2,1 or “around the world”). You still need bases loaded, a batter who is a fairly slow runner, and the ability to get him to ground out to Third Base.
Triple Plays where the ball is caught for a Put-Out and then turned into 2 more Outs just requires the most unlikely situations. You have to have a ball that’s hit in such a way that the baserunners feel it’s safe to run, which is usually a low and fast moving ball that is unlikely to be fielded. Then that ball that is unlikely to be fielded has to be……fielded. For the most part, baserunners in the MLB are extremely aware and are not prone to running on most things in the infield, so it’s rare to even get them caught running even if you do make an extremely good play.

CC Sabathia was pitching in that video for twice for triple plays. That’s pretty rare. Fun fact: CC Sabathia had incentives built into his contract. If he pitched 155 innings in the regular season, he’d get a $500,000 bonus. It was the last start of the season for Sabathia, and one of his teammates was purposely hit by a pitch. The umpires warned both teams. Sabathia came out the next inning and hit a batter on purpose and got ejected, fully aware of the fact that he’d miss out on a $500,000 bonus for coming up a couple of innings short on his contract.

No, you are correct (at 6:00). The ball was caught in the air...so the runner from 1st is required to "tag" the bag before proceeding towards 2nd. The runner (actually both) ran at the crack of the bat. That's how the 2nd out was made when the fielder stepped on 2nd because that runner left too soon. That is called an "unassisted triple play"...the same fielder made all 3 outs. It was probably safer to tag that runner rather than throw to 1st and possibly throw it wild and allow the runner to get back to 1st safely.

Hi guys - really quick regarding double-plays and triple-plays that start from 3rd base, to 2nd base, then 1st base: you were referring to it as around-the-world or around-the-diamond. Traditionally, in baseball it's been called "Around-the-horn". I suppose I could look up why it's called that (I'm not exactly sure), but trust me that's what it's been called for generations.

734 triple plays in total since 1876; an average of about 5 per season. There has only been one this year on July 25 by the Braves at the Red Sox.
11:53 - Actually there is a little quirk in the rules that means there might a point to be made about the runner from first just getting to second before he is tagged and staying there. Putting out a runner because he has left a base before a batted ball was caught is a type of "appeal" play. You have to specifically appeal to the umpire that a runner left early to get him out this way. This is usually done in the normal course of play by just throwing back to the base he left early and purposefully tagging that base. Usually the umpires just give the out, but, if there is any ambiguity as to what you're doing in an appeal situation, they're not obligated to give the out. However, a direct tag of a runner off a base is not an appeal, the runner is either safe because you missed the tag or the runner was on the base at the time of the tag, or he is out because he was tagged off the base. Therefore, if the runner on first reaches second without being tagged and the fielder just tries to tag him before he gets to the base, the umpire may just call that specific tag play safe because the runner is standing on a base that is not occupied and is the successor to the one he was last on. That being said, the fielder can just then lob the ball back to first where the first baseman can tag the base (and maybe point to the ump to indicate an appeal) and that would be it. The only thing I'm not sure of is, if the fielder tags the runner from first, now on second in this scenario, and goes to the ump "he left early," I believe at that point he can still be called out but that's where my knowledge of appeal plays is not 100%. Long story short, baseball rules are weird and complicated.
Nick's right at the end, some of those baffling ones are just the runners trying to get cheeky and getting caught in no-man's land.

14:41 Okay, the ball here was *not* caught on the fly; it bounced, so the runners had to advance. As such, the runner from second took off for third base. They threw the ball to second, that was the first out. While they had the runner from second in a rundown between second and third, the batter arrived at first base, and evidently decided to try to get to second while they were chasing the other runner. Unfortunately, they got him while the batter was still between first and second, at which point there wasn't much he could do but try and beat the throw; he didn't manage it.
