Cycles are rare because triples are fairly rare. The big guys who hit homers tend not to be fleet afoot enough to get triples. Shohei leads the league (or recently did) and he is the exception. Fast guys who hit doubles also get triples, but they tend not to hit a lot of homers. Finally, when you're on cycle watch and need the last hit to complete the cycle, you put pressure on yourself.
@@chrisfromshaolin213 assume you meant dinger, but yeah home runs are about 5-8 more common than triples. In all the non-covid years since 2000, there tends to be around 650-950 triples in a season which makes it so that a triple is likely to happen every 2.5 to 4 games. so they are rare in and of themselves in relation to other baseball plays. But for more context on the cycle, there have been 344 cycles in 238,277 games. which puts it as 0.15% chance to happen in the majors. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that number is decreasing because of the launch angle revolution, parks getting smaller (making triples even harder), 4 hit games becoming more rare, etc.
The rarity of a cycle is about the same as a no-hitter. Only 343 in all MLB history as of June this year. The hardest part now is the triple due to the way ballparks are being built.
cycles are slightly more common than no hitters but yeah, it's similar. What seems to be becoming less common is no hitters by one pitcher. Of the last 11 no hitters, 6 are combined. There are 20 total combined no hitters in baseball history and nearly 1/3 of those have been since 2021.
The cycle is a great accomplishment, but the legend Kirby Puckett topped it in August 1988 when he had two singles, two doubles, and two home runs (6 for 6) in a 9-inning game.
fun fact Trayce Thompson (play #35) of the Dodgers is the younger brother of Klay Thompson. Klay and Trayce have an older brother who also played pro hoops for some years and their dad is the great Mychal Thompson who was part of Magic’s Showtime Lakers during the 80s for a few years and now does broadcast work for the Lakers.
15:03 Spencer Strider was an all-star this year but the Braves pitchers elected not to play so that they could save their arms and focus on the rest of the season.
Hitting for the cycle is rare. The last Phillies player to do it was 19 years ago, Marlins - ironically against the Phillies - have never had one. Marlins came in the league in 1993 with the Colorado Rockies. There were a cluster of Perfect Games in the early 2010’s. A cluster of Unassisted Triple Plays (extremely rare) in late 2000’s.
Machado’s play is in there because of the concentration and because there was a runner on third who is allowed to tag and score except Machado rifled the ball back in and prevented the runner from scoring.
Strider just became the fastest to reach 200 strikeouts in a season breaking his own record he set as a rookie last year That has definitely happen when someone pimps a home run and it doesn't go out. Especially if the wind is blowing in from the outfield
"Stealing home. I don't imagine that happens too often" No it doesn't... but Rod Carew did it 7 times in 1969!!! He had 19 stolen bases for the season!
You are correct about the Marlins, they're one of 4 expansion teams that were added to the league in the 90s. Miami Marlins & Colorado Rockies - 1993 Tampa Bay Rays & Arizona Diamondbacks - 1998 The last franchise to relocate cities was the Montreal Expos who moved to Washington DC in 2004 and became the Nationals.
The thing I think you guys missed about the Machado play.... Most guys would give up and take the error on the first bobble.. much less the second. Especially in foul ground where the worst case is it's a strike on the batter. There was aa GREAT bobble play in the 1980 World Series involving Bob Boone and Pete Rose.. Boone bobbles and drops the ball.. Rose lunged and caught it before it hit the ground
An immaculate inning is striking out all 3 guys on 9 straight strikes. It's been a bit more common last couple years, but I'm pretty sure it's still less common than a no-hitter.
I've been following baseball for 35+ years and I don't remember ever hearing that term before! I obv could understand from context. Would love to see one of my guys through one! That said, I heard a former big league pitcher (in the booth) re-define a perfect game as 27 pitches. THAT would be fun to see and definitely a team win!
What a great video!! Getting that triple is why hitting for the cycle is so rare. You almost need an error or a misplayed ball by the outfielder and then a really fast base runner to get a triple. So much exciting baseball in the first half of the season, but the second half is always better because the stakes are higher as teams jostle for the playoff positions. ♣
Spencer Strider was an All-Star, but didn’t pitched and rested instead. He’s the best strikeout pitcher in the MLB, and on most teams would be their #1 pitcher. Luckily, we have Max Fried too
Rockies fan here. Been yet another rough season, but I'm rooting for the Orioles now! Nice reaction as always guys! :D Fun Fact: There's only been 6 walk off homeruns to complete the cycle in MLB history and the last 2 were done by the Colorado Rockies
I’ve stopped at first base to complete a cycle once, coach wasn’t too happy because it was an easy double😂 I’m happy I did though because it’s the only one I had in my 16 years of playing
The Marlins joined MLB in 1991, but began playing in '93. And yes, I also must watch more Reds games!! That De La Cruz kid is insane!! From out of nowhere!! Greetings from Seattle!! Love your MLB RTTS streams, Nick!! Why don't you play,Damo? You love baseball just as much as Nick!!
It’s so awesome to see the British truly interested and invested in one of the greatest sports to exist. You guys are naming players and saying baseball terms and it’s pulling my heart strings. One day I hope it infiltrates the rest of the UK. I know there is small clubs there, but it’s still lacking. However, the MLB does play annual games in London to help spark interest and baseball in general is starting to become more popular around the world every year.
the best part about 23:16 was that it was his 3rd time getting 5 hits in a game, this game boosting his batting average back up to .400. although he has not been able to maintain a .400 BA, it’s incredibly impressive that he even got that high so late in the season. Luis Arraez is a huge throwback type hitter with his contact first approach
I can't think of an occasion where a batter thought he hit a home run and was robbed. Much more common is when a hitter thinks they've hit a home run and it stays in the park.
Bryce Harpers first game back as a position player (was DH-ing after early return from Tommy John surgery), playing 1st base - for the first time ever - & makes an incredible play over the foul territory into tv camera box. That just happened so it wouldn’t have made this list.
Idk about a bat flip, but there are tons of players that think they hit a home run and they slowly jog. Then the ball falls into play and they have to sprint just to get a double. Sometimes…they’re thrown out at 2B
Elly De La Crúz is in his 1st season. He was called up from the minor leagues on June 6th, 2023. Next year will be his 1st full season in the MLB. He's only 21 years old!
Fun fact- Trayce Thompson is Klay Thompson's younger brother...Klay and Trayce's father is NBA's 1978 #1 Overall Pick Mychal Thompson...Mychal ended up being a key role player for the Back-To-Back NBA Champions LA Lakers in '87 & '88...Which is why that 3 Homer night at Chavez Ravine was special as the Thompson boys were born and raised in SoCal.
I'm watching #50 and I can already tell you my favorite highlight of the year to come. It's Ellie De La Cruz stealing 2nd 3rd and home on 2 pitches. Insane.
Yeah not surprised it was #2 after watching. I watch a TON of baseball and that was the best moment I've seen in years. The perfect game from stupid head I could care less about. German is a douche bag. Ellie shoulda been #1 😉
In case you didn't know... Trayce Thompson (3 HR for the Dodgers) is Klay Thompson's brother! He also represented the Great Britain during the WBC! Love your reactions guys! Keep them up!
Great reaction , lads. I'm a little biased cause Im a Miami Marlins fan, so Luis Arraez hitting for the cycle was my favorite. I'm glad my Marlins have this generations version of Tony Gwynn. Luis is a special player. You are correct, Damo. The Marlins inaugural season was 1993.
Awesome list. Machado is well deserved to be on that list. Over the shoulder catches are super difficult, especially when sliding in foul territory dodging stuff. Go Braves
The wife beater that threw the Perfect Game is gone from the Yankees for now. He trashed the Yankees locker room & went on a tirade the other day. He should’ve never never been allowed back after his 2nd suspension for beating his wife.
It is about the same in rarity as a no-hitter. Only 343 players out of 20,405 major leaguers have done it. A natural cycle is getting a single, double, triple, and home run in that order. That has only happened 15 times in major league history.
The thing I always find funny is when a batter stops to admire a "home run", it falls short, and they have to scramble to get to first base when they should have had a double.
Last season, the Astros had two “Immaculate Innings” against the Rangers in the same game…lol. What’s even better? It was against the same 3 batters..🙂
Also really like seeing Brits react to and appreciate baseball. My understand is it evolved from rounders. People who say baseball is boring either don't like sports in general or don't understand what they are watching. These guys obviously get it!
There have been guys who hit the ball... give a bat flip and start trotting to first... and the outfielder caught the ball in front of the warning track.. It's happened MANY times
I'd love if you guys reacted to the A's reverse boycott games. Its been a really tough season for us, and quite frankly a really rough decade. But for one game, on a random Tuesday, against the other lowest attendance team in the league, we made the Colosseum feel like a playoff atmosphere. We've been dumped on personally as fans by ownership, weve been dumped on by media, we've watched our team get gutted year after year, weve sat in a stadium thats deteriorated around us, we've watched ticket prices skyrocket, we're watching a completely uncompetitive team, weve watched them lie about working to get a stadium in Oakland. Just pure disrespect. But we showed up for our team. I'd really appreciate it
Cycles are mostly hard because of the triple, because usually to get a triple, either you need a good hit and a lot of speed or the ball takes a really wacky bounce off the wall and kicks away from the outfielder
10:18 you guys misunderstood that little fact (though perhaps you figured it out on your own right after). an immaculate inning is when a pitcher strikes out all three batters in the inning with the minimum amount of pitches (9 pitches, 3 strikes per batter). in holderman's case, it was the 4th time in that team's history it had happened, not that he had 4 strikeouts. hope this helps (:
I know im late, and maybe you have already, but i saw u mentioned matt vasgersian. You have to watch a highlights video of his best calls. Dude is electric.
It was Armando Galarraga in 2010 for the Tigers who was 1 out away from a perfect game when the umpire made a bad call at first base to cost him the perfect game
That wasn’t the tigers first no hitter, it was the first thrown by multiple pitchers (combined no hitter) for the team. Justin Verlander has thrown 2 for the them when he was there.
Torii Hunter robbed Barry Bonds in an All-Star Game and it was hilarious. Can't remember if it was a bat flip involved but he was running the bases like he went yard 😂.
The "flipping the bat" is a new phenomenon. It is verboten per the unwritten rules and a bone of contention amongst the veterans of the game. I am looking forward to someone flipping the bat and getting robbed at the wall.
Elly came out really strong but he's come back down to earth since. He's still a slightly above average hitter (in terms of OPS+) but that's what tends to happen with rookie phenoms. They come up and pitchers don't quite know how to pitch to them yet so they challenge them with different things until they figure out what they have trouble with. Once they figure out, "Oh, this guy can't catch up to high fastballs." or "Oh, he'll swing and sliders out of the zone." or "He can't recognize a change-up." they'll suddenly get nothing BUT those pitches until they can figure it out (if they can figure it out). So it's always good to practice caution whenever a minor leaguer comes up and goes crazy at the plate. MLB Pitchers will figure out their weakness reallllly quickly and then exploit it. That's why the "Sophomore Slump" is such a real thing in baseball. It's all a matter of whether or not you can adapt to whatever weakness the league figures out you have. Some guys do. Some guys don't.
A player might stop at first to complete a cycle like you discussed, but only if the score is already pretty lopsided, and he'd probably want to secure his manager's permission before going to bat. Marlins debuted in 1991 or 1992, not sure offhand exactly.
Just a point about "cycles." There are cycles in any order, then there are what are known as "Natural Cycles," where they are hit in increasing order.....single, double, triple, home run. While there have been 343 cycles, there have only been 14 natural cycles. That is even rarer than perfect games.
If you two cats ever get the chance to visit the States, I'd highly recommend you both stop in Cooperstown, New York. Home of the Baseball Hall Of Fame. You won't be disappointed.
The only thing is that if you are one hit away and need the single and you a hit a double and stop at first. You care about your stats more than about the winning.
Actual cycle has about the same rarity as a no-hitter. There are 343 cycles in MLB history, and I believe there are 324 No hitters. The cycle is harder to do now because the way ball parks are designed It’s very difficult to get a triple.
Damo, at least the Padres got on the list for something positive. The only two Brewers plays in the countdown were Zach Greinke striking out Joey Weimer and Elly De La Cruz stealing second, third, and home in one at bat. Oh well. As I write this, we still have a 2.5 game lead over the Cubs and Reds, so I can't complain.
Oh you’re definitely having a much better season. At least you’re be there for the post season! I’ll be twiddling my thumbs, deciding on who to jinx next 😂
The cycle is a funny thing because it's celebrated because it's rare, but it's not particularly GREAT. It's 4 hits, and by definition only 1 home run. So if you're a single, double, or triple away from the cycle, just hitting another hime run would be better.
If I understood, Montcastle had 9 rbi's in the game where he hit the grand slam. That is more impressive. For pitchers, you should look up Sandy Kofax in the 60's. These highlights are very recent.
Go figure my hometeam who was excellent for a large part of the season + has the actual ROTY favorite, only has 1 play on this list, meanwhile Elly has like 3+ lol. AZ never gets any love lol.
I want to say how much I appreciate the fact that two Brits can take the time to understand and enjoy baseball, and your videos are entertaining to watch as we see your reactions to our national pastime. But I fear you are missing a lot of the point of being a true baseball fan. It's a long slow game. 162 games. 9 innings (or more) each game. "True" baseball fans (to varying degrees) watch every inning, every pitch. Every boring foul ball. That's why these "Top Plays" are so great to see live. True baseball fans listen to games on the radio. Baseball is an amazingly descriptive game to visualize and there are many outstanding broadcasters giving play by play. I would highly recommend that both of you listen to a full 9 inning game on a radio broadcast to fully appreciate what I mean. What MLB is trying to do is sell people on thinking that the "Top Plays" are the norm and happen ever few minutes.. They are trying to make the game faster and more flashy for the younger generation. That's all cool as long as they keep the integrity of the game. As for being a fan, enjoy the game for what it is. It's a slow leisurely summer game that takes it's sweet time. Sit back with a beer and enjoy it. Then when you see a "Top Play" you will know why it's not the usual thing. Thanks fellas, "Play ball !"
9:30.... also, cycles in baseball are rare! Because you hit for a single, double, triple, and HR. Triples are rare to get to begin with! Nobody has hit the home run cycle, yet! An inside-the-park, solo dinger, 2-run, 3-run, or 4-run (grand slam).

It's probably easier to hit a dinner than to get a triple.

Yes! I think it was in 2009! Eric Bruntlett. I think that was only the 2nd time ever

The Twins were in this top 50 in the sense that Byron Buxton hit a ball that was spectacularly robbed three separate times
Love how he shows respect by tipping his helmet.
All by orioles too

Every city the guy plays in love him! So sad he left Philly, but Pittsburgh is his adoptive home

You guys need to react to Ronald Acuna. He is the favorite to win National League MVP. Outside of Shohei, best player in the game.
Can’t wait for Mullins to come back for the Orioles, 4 plays in the top 50
You can't escape Cedric Mullins
I love that you were able to comment on one you watched live.
In case you didn't know... Trayce Thompson (3 HR for the Dodgers) is Klay Thompson's brother! He also represented the Great Britain during the WBC!
Love your reactions guys! Keep them up!
I didn’t know this, crazy little fact! Thanks for letting us know and we really appreciate the support, thanks
A couple of years ago, Christian Yelich had 2 cycles in the same season, and even more add, they were both against the Reds
Y’all need to watch Secret Base’s series about the Seattle Mariners. You guys would love it.

Nice to see Byron Buxton make three appearances in the top 50 (hitting balls caught by Oriole outfielders).
Cycles are mostly hard because of the triple, because usually to get a triple, either you need a good hit and a lot of speed or the ball takes a really wacky bounce off the wall and kicks away from the outfielder

8:30 Fun fact: Trayce Thompson is the younger brother of GSW star Klay Thompson!
Was Buxton on the losing end of three separate robbery catches in this video lol??
I was at everyone of the reds highlights at home! Benson's HR maybe my favorite.
Poor Byron Buxton. I think 5 of these HR robberies were against him.
That was a fun video to watch with you guys - thanks!
I hope your teams make the postseason because I think playoff baseball is something you need to experience
Criminally few clips of Acuña!
Wow, Twins were on here three times!...all Buxton getting hits taken away from him.. poor guy is struggling enough as is!
That wasn’t the tigers first no hitter, it was the first thrown by multiple pitchers (combined no hitter) for the team. Justin Verlander has thrown 2 for the them when he was there.
Luis Robert Jr owns the entire outfield
Elly is an absolute stud of a ball player
Torii Hunter robbed Barry Bonds in an All-Star Game and it was hilarious. Can't remember if it was a bat flip involved but he was running the bases like he went yard 😂.
Don't forget Aaron Hill hit for the cycle TWICE in 10 days for Dbacks.!
The "flipping the bat" is a new phenomenon. It is verboten per the unwritten rules and a bone of contention amongst the veterans of the game. I am looking forward to someone flipping the bat and getting robbed at the wall.
I'm beginning to think the Seattle Mariners are a collective hallucination of the people of the PNW.
Ya Bellinger was on the IL for a month bc of that catch he made at the wall
Was an incredible catch!
Reds have a whole lineup of exciting rookies.
Buxton was robbed 3 separate times by the Orioles in this video. lol
Watching this video made me realize just how many time byron buxton gets robbed of homers
If you two cats ever get the chance to visit the States, I'd highly recommend you both stop in Cooperstown, New York. Home of the Baseball Hall Of Fame. You won't be disappointed.
Chop On, Braves baby. y’all should watch the Braves 2021 Title run. Max Fried & Strider highlights
Good to see former cubs javy baez in the video.
The only thing is that if you are one hit away and need the single and you a hit a double and stop at first. You care about your stats more than about the winning.
Kenley Jansen is a bit more amazing story getting 400 saves than Kimbrel because Jansen wasn't a pitcher until his fifth year in the minor leagues.
Theres a brawl happening right now between the White Sox and Guardians
On average 4 players a year hit for the cycle. Last year (2022) 5 players hit for the cycle.
8:20.... Trayce Thompson represented Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) this year
9:30.... also, cycles in baseball are rare! Because you hit for a single, double, triple, and HR. Triples are rare to get to begin with!
Nobody has hit the home run cycle, yet! An inside-the-park, solo dinger, 2-run, 3-run, or 4-run (grand slam).
