Beginner knife maker here, and to me, the hardest and most confusing part of the whole process is sharpening. I bought a guided sharpening system, that just doesn’t work…or at least I can’t make it work. I actually bought your edge guide for the 1x30, and while it makes it easier, there are a few cons with it also. Now, I am exploring sharpening by edge trailing. This video just seems to make it much more understandable and by far, easier. I’m headed out to my shop to flip my 1x30 on its back. Thank you!
I'd be curious to see more on edge leading vs. edge trailing and specific scenarios to use each method and with which grits. I've struggled to get toothy edges. Love the videos! Thank you!!
Another great video. One of many I have enjoyed. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us. Happy is he who can learn from the wisdom of others.
This may seem like an obscure reference, but is meant as a sincere complement. You're like the Buckin' Billy Ray of 1x30 knife sharpening. Thanks for sharing!!
Another great video. I would like to know more about measuring edge angles. What is the 0 degree on a knife and also on a scissors? A 30 degree on a knife is different than a 30 degree on a scissors. Is 90 degrees always the belt angle? Once you mentioned that a scissors edge had a 0 degree angle, but if the belt angle is at 90 degrees, wouldn't the angle perpendicular to the belt be a 45 degree angle? That is a video I would be really interested in. Thanks for sending me 3 scotch-brite belts. I have yet to use them to remove scratches on a Coup Coup machete and a Colombian machete restoration. Have a great day!
Absolutely top notch video! Excellent instruction! Excellent explanations! Excellent photography! Thank you very much!!! By the way, I am guilty of putting the green compound probably a little too much on the strap and you are right! It is gunky! I’m wondering the best way to clean the strop. THANKS
I use rubbing alcohol and a old rag being careful it dont get tangled up. I think we are all guilty of it trying to find that magic combo. some never learn you can use alot less.
I enjoyed that one. You guys maybe dont realize when I hit record I dont know whats gonna happen either 100%. Its not like I rehearse. lol When it sliced the free standing paper I was tickled. Also the way the burr flaked off and got recorded.
On the strop would a polishing paste like those for jewelry work? Love your video's. Each one seems to add just a little bit more insight on the craft, also have plenty of overlap to keep us up to it in what is happening. Thanks for finding the time for us collectively.
Great video Cliff. What's the consensus on drawing the blade across a piece of soft wood to remove that burr? I've seen some people do that but I'm not sure if it works or not.
deburring by scraping into wood will tear the apex and dull it. Even the loose material you scrape off will be smashing into the sharp edge as you pull it thru.
Safety first and always. People dont or wont talk about it but machines need to be learned to respect and be careful around. Hope you can find info in my videos that can help you learn.
Now that is a tricky question isnt it? You could finish with a micro-bevel by edge leading into a ceramic honing rod or whetstone a couple passes then VERY lightly stropping step. ;)
Excellent video. The burr formation is the most important part of sharpening I believe. No matter if you are using a file, diamond bench stones or belts, if you don't have that burr, it is not sharp.
Agree ofcourse that the 2 surfaces need to apex together. But Cliff Stamp with contend I think that to minimize that burr formation is to preserve steel that hasnt been softened or compromised. Thats a fine discussion for another video ;)
Awesome video. I think edge trailing works best for me. I'm just more comfortable and I can judge my angle best... but I for me it's about confidence ... if I'm scared I'm probably gonna mess up lmao
Yup Gary, ya know its funny when you learn some of this and then its another thing when you can learn how to explain and even get to show it on camera. Good feeling! Thx for being here ;)
I'm so confused. When do I do edge leading on a belt sander? My Tormek slow speed grinding is edge leading. Honing is edge trailing. In your other videos I see a lot of edge leading for sharpening but this video kind of goes against that. HELP!! TIA.
Premium quality Kangaroo leather Cliff it's great, has so much stick to the surface really grabs that burr and rips it off it even holds compounds really well. I'd love it if someone could make some belts of it for me for the 1x30. I can source the leather from my supplier.
back in my early Wicked Edge starting out days the kangaroo leather was top of the shelf for sure. When running compound I find it dont really matter as much but with diamond spray its amazing the results it can give just from hand stropping!
Amazing. In this one your camera work may rival your sharpening. Finally see and understand the burr. Bravo and Bravo.
One of your best videos, Cliff. Very informative. Good work!
Perfectly explained! Cheers Matt

Wow! I have never seen paper stood up and sliced before. THAT was impressive !

Next video... Should address just this tricky issue
Brilliant video thanks for showing us how to sharpen and the effects of edge trailing method
Glad you liked it. Its an older video but still one of my favorites, especially the burr removal process is text book really.
Another great video. One of many I have enjoyed. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us. Happy is he who can learn from the wisdom of others.
Best limb knife I've ever had was a old corn knife shaped similar to that one.
Thanks for Sharing Your Years of Knowledge!!
Excellent advice on finding the cutting edge angle on a particular steel for your use case scenario.
Can you set up the ribbon to be edge trailing and use the guide as you would with edge leading?
Thank you, I'm glad I found your channel
Welcome!

Ill take it! haha Thanks!!
Cliff, a good topic for a video might be the edge trailing angle guides now available for 1x30 belt sanders.
Im not a fan of those and can explain why when I do next one. Great suggestion!

Just the best lnstruction on theory and method. I learned a lot.

Would you say Green compound, the one you refere to as gunky. Is better, or even the best alternative for a felt wheel?
Fantastic info Cliff. Thanks so much.

How about a demo on sharpening straight razors?
On the strop would a polishing paste like those for jewelry work? Love your video's. Each one seems to add just a little bit more insight on the craft, also have plenty of overlap to keep us up to it in what is happening. Thanks for finding the time for us collectively.
Yup can work Mark. Maybe a little residue on blade but easy to wipe with rubbing alcohol.
Thank you for talking about safety...
Great video Cliff.

Question: Is the wheel on the grinder a grinding wheel or one of your scotchbright wheels? Thanks
scotchbrite n probably leather on the other side
Great video and very helpful. I'm new to sharpening. Thank you

Nice job.could you tell me what machine you are using.I’d like to buy one.thanks
This is a Rikon 50-161. Another out of box option is the Bucktool 1x30 I will do a review on soon
Everyone push the "Like" button! 👍
Thanks for the video.
This video is one that I refer people back to often regarding edge trailing burr removal demo. Glad you like it
Good job thank you
Thanks! Great job!.
Glad you liked it!
Nice. Just getting into knife making taking all this in.
As always, excellent video. Thank you.
Very welcome ;)
What kind of belt sander is that?
Rikon 50-161 variable speed
Ive done several videos on it and featuring it....new ones coming soon
Great video! Do you have a preferred amount of microns with your diamond emulsion?
How would you obtain a toothy edge, when sharpening edge trailing ? I am using a HF 1/30 belt sander
Now that is a tricky question isnt it? You could finish with a micro-bevel by edge leading into a ceramic honing rod or whetstone a couple passes then VERY lightly stropping step. ;)
@CurryCustomCutlery thanks for the reply. I have never tried Edge leading before on the belt sander, that's why I thought Edge trailing would be safer
I just found your videos outstanding job. You really covered a few questions I had.

Did I miss the link to the experiments with the belts?
Im building to a new belt review video...
With the various wheels, belts, methods, what is your go to for sharpening?
Still typically edge leading for the speed and repeat angle on knives. Machetes and convex edge cleavers usually trailing.
That is a awesome machete. It looks like it has some history...
I got it while deep in the backwoods of Indonesia while getting married.
@@CurryCustomCutlery awesome story... I'm sure it has great memories associated with it...
Hi Cliff,
Is the bench grinder a low speed one?
Thanks, good video 😉👍
No, but I have a slow speed in box to do a few new things with next!
@@CurryCustomCutlery thanks, a full speed bench grinder with stones is a spooky thing. 😉✌️
Awesome video. I think edge trailing works best for me. I'm just more comfortable and I can judge my angle best... but I for me it's about confidence ... if I'm scared I'm probably gonna mess up lmao
Thank you. I pick up a few gems from each of your instructional videos.
What are the specs on the Scotch-Brite wheel you are using?
Im working in sourcing directly now but for time being Im just pulling off of Amazon a scotch brite wheel that has a #180 in its listing.
Does speed matter with the Scotchbrite wheel?
Great question...I like to run em a bit quicker then I sharpen but dont think it matters just works quicker to my feel?
Great video! Good point about increasing the speed a bit and less pressure with the leather belt.
Yup Gary, ya know its funny when you learn some of this and then its another thing when you can learn how to explain and even get to show it on camera. Good feeling! Thx for being here ;)

love the new vids!
Okay... How the heck do you guys change belts so fast?
Sharpening pocket folding knives
Next video will be on pocket knife sharpening
Cool
Itu sejata golok, khas indonesia, jawa barat...manonjaya
Correct. I bought it in Central Java near Banumas when I was getting married there.
The best
Max YOUR the best sir, I hope to make it out your way someday. Best to you n yours!!!
be sure to put a light coating of oil on the blade. you DO live in Hawaii ;-)
Thats fair 100%...just did it!
Ah huh too much pressure and incorrect angle on strop interesting! Wondered why it would start to get dull after strop.
Its funny how you can add to you understanding over time, myself included.
