The rabbit is in the moon comes from an old Korean fairytale of a rabbit sitting on the moon brewing the elixir of immortality. There is a Korean saying that translates to something like “if you get cursed a lot, you will live long.” So they are basically saying that because they get cursed so much, by the haters, they will live forever.
Those giant mop like creatures are from the Korean Lion Dance. It exorcism ritual to be performed in the New Year in Korea to get rid of the bad spirits for the previous year. This song is basically embracing everything that the haters try to use against them. Taehyung, the one is the heart shirt, is wearing glasses that people told him he didn’t look good in but he really liked. Namjoon was using filters because “fans” told him to stop using them during live streams. Jimin is often accused of being to feminine especially by international antis so he is doing the traditionally female fan dance, Buchaechum, while singing in a high voice, falsetto? sorry I don’t know what it is called. Korean antis accuse them of forgetting their Korean heritage for international success, so this entire song was a celebration of the Korean culture mixed with other cultures, African, Latin, and a few others. With this they are basically saying that we are all people sharing the same earth and mixing cultures should be encouraged but just because someone is taking influence from other cultures doesn’t mean they are forgetting their own. In the simplest form this song is a celebration of self love and acceptance. Once you can love and respect yourself and where you come from that is something that nobody can take away from you no matter how hard you try.
This was beautifully written. I wouldn't call myself a BTS stan but I love how they stay true as artists even when they have so much pressure at the top. Truly remarkable, they are legends for sure.
RABBIT IN THE MOON: In the Eastern hemisphere the part of the moon that is seen is different from what we see in the Western hemisphere. Here we say that if you look carefully the moon has a man's face in it. In Korea, they say that you can see the shape of a rabbit in the moon. Therefore there is a lot of folklore about the rabbit on the moon in Korea.
Yep its basically a shout out to their traditional roots (along with the traditional characters ("the mops") and the martial arts moves are a Korean traditional ceremonial dance move)
Also fun fact is that section you hear RM saying 'Talkin, Talkin, Talkin" which phonetically sounds like "Toki, Toki, Toki"; toki being the pronunciation for the word "Rabbit" in Korean. So it's kind of a pun/double entendre in that moment.
So Taehyung is the one making funny faces to the camera. And it is a troll response to those who call him “weird, immature, alien-like, etc etc” every member has something they’ve been ridiculed for that they’re taking back and being proud of in the video. Loving themselves
Concert live versions are awesome, and the version they did on Jimmy Fallon highlights the Korean dress and culture, plus their performance has that in you're face attitude and the version of the dance that I love.
Idol is a song for self love and self acceptance. A "traditionally inspired track" featuring different classical Korean instruments, with electronic dance music in the style of South African dance music. The music video is too much on purpose, too many cgi, too many effects, (when they 95% of the times don't use cgis), too many colors, using things that people criticized them about, RM's camera filters, their draws, V's glasses, hairstyle and his shirt with the hearts etc. It's like a answer for people saying "oh you are not a rapper anymore, for being in a kpop group" "you have too many colors in your mvs, everyone looks the same, you are westernized, you sound like american pop, this style doesn't fit you". So yeah they trolling and having fun in the mv, telling that they can't stop them lovin themselves, while honouring their roots.
@@KnoxHill i don't know if people have told you yet, but there is so much significance in every image and lyric BTS make in almost every song that there are literally explanation videos. Not every song has one (they have hundreds of songs, it wouldn't be possible) but there is enough to appreciate their genius. You're one of the few first time reactors who caught on to the fact there was so much Korean cultural references. Most newbies tend to look at the videos and think everything is random and just funny. It's really not. Also, they don't have many "standalone" songs (mic drop is one of the few). Mostly their songs are part of album arcs (each album has a certain storyline, and certain groups of albums have an overarching concept. It's really very artistic, creative and interesting). That's why it can sometimes be hard to grasp whats going on. Idol is the final song of the Love Yourself album series, and Mic Drop was also released during that era, hence you notice the similar type of message.
It's kinda scary how you're always on point with the lyrics/message in every bts reaction video without even being an ARMY or with just the MV first time..
Fun fact: Each Bts comeback has a different style, which is what makes each comeback so enthusiastic and the songs of each album are different from the albums before and after and they are the only kpop artist/group to do this they are different from other groups and artists and that’s why they are very popular and loved , they have their own style with different styles on each comeback.
This is a final song of their love yourself series. They basically go through a journey to love themselves. This song is basically their celebration after they succeeded loving themselves. I recommend if you check out the entire series 💜
@@CommanderArmin I don't think it matters too much as long as they enjoy the song? It's a shame if they're missing out, but it's their loss :) there are actually so many messages that explain videos go into which is the next level. Oh my god loool "I feel like I need some glow sticks" This is why the kpop community has lightsticks for groups. And they add sooooo much to live concerts. "There's so much happening behind it" - you have no idea how spot on you are with that. It resonates with every level that BTS works on- be it their music production, video production, lyrics, inspiration, background and backstory, choreography etc. The members and their team put a significant amount of thought and effort to weave their stories and what they want to say and convert it into literal art. They are an endless pit of talent and so much more.
The indian festival you are trying to refer to is called Holi, a literal celebration of colours and joy. It represents the eternal victory of good over evil.

I love that BTS used the green screen so crazy for de MV beacuse the haters don't stop to say that all of MV of BTS was with green screen, the video plus the sing.... really BTS is very cool.
I’m surprised you don’t mention how badass their dancing is!!! It blows me away!! BTS is sooooo talented - they are humble, amazing singers, amazing dancing, connected to their fans like no other artist.
The one you were asking about his facial expression is V. He is widely known as the KING of facial expressions while performing and other Kpop idols study his moves and expressions while they are training. He has been labeled “the Idol of Idols”. In this video he is acting kind of goofy to fit the mood. I’m surprised you picked up on it from just a couple of shots. Make no mistake he stands out for his onstage charisma because he FEELS every emotion in the song and it shows. Plus he’s also done acting.
the one that have the funniest face expression his name is V he have the deepest vocals..his vocals on another level ..u should react to sweet night and blue and grey💜

11:44 No those aren’t mops! That’s actually meant to represent Haetae- literally “an omniscient mythical creature”. It’s a legendary creature in East Asian Mythology. You can notice that in this video, they are wearing Korean traditional outfits called Hanboks (like at 6:58) and also, their choreography has elements of Korean traditional dance styles (like the spin jump that you mentioned at 9:39). This song may have a bouncy nature with a visually joyous and colourful music video to complement the same, but the underlying message is quite deep; it is them reflecting on their identities. They are artists, idols and Koreans and like this, they have several identities. Their artist selves and their personal selves maybe different, but they are the same people. It is also a clapback to the haters who criticised them, saying that they have become too “westernised” in terms of their musical identity, and also otherwise; hence, they have incorporated these traditional Korean elements by portraying that they honour their roots and are proud of who they are. The starting lines “You can call me artist, you can call me idol... I don’t care, I’m proud of it” actually point out to the fact, that the initial members of BTS (RM and Suga) were underground rappers, but when they left the underground scene to become idol trainees, they were mocked and looked down upon by the underground rap community (it is a common stereotype that idols are only manufactured celebrities who just follow what’s popular and are meant to just shine in the public eye supported by their visuals and limited talents). In response, they’re saying that they’re “never gonna change and never gonna trade” as they don’t care about what others have to say about them. They have proved time and time again that they are much above the typical “idol” image and also that the go way beyond what “K-Pop” is. I have sooo much more to write, but I guess I’ll stop here for now. (Also, the Indian festival that you mentioned is Holi)
Yup, it’s a mythical lion figure. People often dress up like this lion figure during traditional Korean festivals. Idol is basically like an anthem song celebrating Korean culture and celebrating who BTS is!
The first guy who rapped is RM (Rap Monster/Namjoon) (2:11) Second guy who rapped is J-hope (Jung Hoeseok) (3:10) 3rd guy who rapped is Suga (Min Yoongi) (3:48) The guy with funny facial expressions is V (Kim Taehyung) (5:14) The guy who sings "You can't stop me lovin' myself" is Jimin (Park Jimin) (5:25) The guy with red hair and also is in the middle in the first scene is Jungkook (Jeon Jungkook) (8:36) The guy at 11:26 is Jin (Kim Seokjin) And there's a total of seven members in the group!
"there seems to be a deeper meaning to this." oh boy don't let me start, coz then this will be an essay but thankfully i'm lazy so no 😁 just know that with BTS, there's always a deeper meaning to their music. also, they have THE most diverse discography, their music always has something for anybody. looking forward to your journey!
OK, so. Excellent reaction! You are correct, there is a lot more going on in the music and in the video then can just be found in one sitting. There are a couple of different explanation videos on RUclips, from native Korean speakers, explaining some of the cultural context and Hidden Easter eggs that are in the video. If you want to see a live version, check out the MMA 2018 BTS Idol video. It’s a bit longer, but also showcases some of cultural elements used in the dance and music. Also, the dancers have incredible solos.
The first one:Rm( rap monster) The second:Jhope (who said "I'm proud of it) N3 is Suga N4 is V/Taehyung( just after rm) N5 is Jimin( who said " you can't stop lovin myself) the one who said " who hoo" is Jungkook(The one on the left with the expression is V) After we have Jin with " oh oh oooyooo ohhh ohh oyoo". Sorry if it's not good I can't do better xd Edit; it's not rap monster but real me bcz he changes. Call him just Rm
For a whole different vibe: "Spring day" from BTS Or "Your eyes tell" (There is no MV but performances and many lyric Videos woth english translations) Or "Blue and Grey" (There isn't a MV too. It is from the latest album.) But not only the songs that have musicvideos are good. They are more emotional and less aggressive. I would like it to show you a different side so that you will be surprised.
6:19 That’s Taehyung. He’s the “weird” one of the group (in a good way, though). Nobody will ever know what goes on inside his head, but we love him nonetheless. 6:38 That Indian festival is Holi. It is celebrated as a way to welcome in spring, and also is seen as a new beginning where people can release all their inhibitions and start fresh. There is also a religious symbolic legend as to why it’s celebrated, but I don’t know much about it since I’m atheistic, but what I do know is that the word “Holi” was derived from “Holika”, an asura. Coming from an Indian.
fun facts: 1. IDOL use South Korea traditional music instruments for the beats and music arragements. 2. There is a house on the refrain part, It's called Hanok, South Korea traditional house. 3. They also wearing Hanbok, South Korea traditional clothes, but in modern model where you can mix & match it with casual daily styles. 4. The dragon means "independece" by South Korea citizens.
This song is more deep than a lot of people realize when they first watch and i'm glad to see you went really deep with the reaction:) The rabbit in the moon is from the Chinese tale, the rabbit is busy pounding the elixir of life in a mortar for the goddess of the moon. In Korea, the rabbit is pounding rice into flour in a mortar to make heavenly rice cake. It's also a reference to a famous Korean folktale, in which a god honored a selfless rabbit by placing it in the moon. The rabbit also symbolizes immortality and there is a Korean saying that translates to "the more you are cursed at, the longer you will live." BTS could see themselves as the rabbits, there's a lot of multiple meanings and references and cultures in this video. I'm afraid I can't help you with the mop looking things, I think it's a cultural costume sort of like the Chinese dragon but I am really not sure. I really hope you do more BTS! I love the way you look at their music and I also like your music too!
1 Kim Namjoon - RM - The leader of the group 2 Kim Sheokjin - Jin 3 Min Yoongi - Suga - Agust d 4 Jung Hoseok - J Hope 5 Park Jimin - Jimin 6 Kim Taehyung - V - Tae 7 Jeon Jungkook - Jungkook- Kookie
I'm telling you their whole discography is so diverse. There's no song sounds the same. It's like you're entering into a new world with so much great things. Even their side tracks are 5 stars. You're going to like them for sure
You're not wrong. This was absolutely WILD live. They went OFF. The audience went OFF. It was incredible. Two years later and I still can't believe how incredible a BTS concert was.
Stray kids-Gods menu... I think you will be impressed that they have their own producing unit within the group that creates all their songs... their flow is ridiculous
BTS have been criticised for being too Korean. For being too westernized. For being idols, for not being idol enough. You name it they've been slagged off for it. Even for using filters in photos (Hence RM using his filters lol). Just about everything you can think of haters have used against them. Idol is a clap back to all the slights they've received while delivering the message "I don't care what you think or say about me. I love myself regardless of that"
I really recommend you check out their song “UGH!” It’s a rap line only song and it really showcases the rappers full pontecials. The lyrics are about getting angry at people being angry for no reason and harming other people that way. It talks about how anger can be good and can even change the world but many people don’t know where to direct it towards
Him: "What made me feel like it's bts is that there's this aggression and swag to it" Me: "HO we're just getting started. there are aiuefhgywjhb more sides to this amazing group"
I really love the fact that you really try to understand the meaning of their songs since BTS really take into consideration the lyrics of their songs.
Idk if someone did it already but I'm putting it anyways 3:01 is Kim Namjoon with his stage name RM. Back then he used rapmonster but then changed it to RM means "Real Me" 3:09 is Jung hoseok known as J-hope as his stage name 7:47 is Min yoongi and his stage name is suga also known as AGUST D the agus is the reverse of suga and the T and D in AGUST D means Daegu Town and again in reverse 8:13 is Jeon Jungkook the youngest member of the group he just go with his name Jungkook as a stage name 8:43 is Kim Taehyung and his stage name is V. He is the on you find funny with his facial expression 🤣 8:49 is Kim Seok Jin and he also goes by his name Jin in stage. He is tha oldest member of the group. 11:20 is Park Jimin and he also goes by his name Jimin when on stage I hope this helps sorry for my bad english though.
Namjoon used to use these filters on Vlive because he liked them, however fans told him not to use the filters. After that, he stopped using filters, but in the MV as you can see he bounced back. He basically saying“is there any problem to use filters? i just want to use it, so yea, you can’t control me and stop me whatever i love to do.”As for Taehying, he’s already self conscious of how he looks in his prescriptions glasses. So some really dumb fans still had the audacity to tell him that he doesn’t look good in them, and he should take them off. Oof the nerve right? But anyway in IDOL, Taehyung is wearing those very same glasses fans told him not to wear and he doesn’t care. They’ve all shown that they’re completely ok with who they are, and that they won’t change for anyone. They love themselves, and we should too. That’s what I really about love this song, it really shows that even after their journey as IDOLS that they’ve began to love themselves. I struggle a lot with this, but I truly admire the message they’re trying to send.
BTS can do literally whatevere they want. Musically they never stop experimenting with differents generes. That's something I really love about their music, you never get tired of the sound. It is something different every time
'You can't stop me loving myself!' BTS wrote those lyrics for everyone to sing, not just them. When the world is sticking labels on you, putting you in a box, sing this song. You decide who you are, not other people. Idol is just one healing message from BTS.
The live performance of Idol is so lit. It gets your heart pumping to hear it in a stadium of 60k ARMY singing along. And BTS go wild when performing it. They don't make bad music. From front to end, their discography is perfection. 👌
This reaction just made me laugh the whole time. I am full charged in positivity! This reminds me how many emotions I was getting when watching the mv for the first time during their comeback! Your reactions are amazing. You can explain all those layers and music, vocal and rap delivery tricks which always made me crazy, but I didn't know why
IDOL is a blend of traditional Korean and African/Middle Eastern beats. The leg dance move is the Gwara Gwara a dance from South Africa. I love the energy of IDOL it’s like a punch in the face to their haters and xenophobes, because no matter what they say BTS’ Korean culture is amazing and beautiful (they’re wearing traditional custom Hanboks), and BTS still breaking records with #1’s on the global and USA charts. There’s a great explained by Korean video by DKDKTV about this MV there are so many awesome layers to the meaning it’s wild.
Yes, the DKDKTV is a channel with two Korean men who speak English perfectly and explain the Korean cultural references in many music videos that non-Koreans wouldn’t understand without context.
@@blackbeauty5817 from the limited info I was able to get seems like it is a South African dance created by DJ Bongz (I'm South African and still had to look it up to be sure lol). But I do know the music itself in IDOL is very much inspired by South African dance music (the whistle sound throughout).
The beat is influenced by Gqom, which is a South African genre. This song is the one that introduced most South Africans to BTS since it has a similar sound to what we used to hearing and in their choreography they cooperated a South African dance move called "gwara gwara", which is like super cool 😁
This is a song spitting in the eye of people telling them "you can't do that or you can't do this" RM's cat ears and the over the top look of the video. It's a big FU to people saying they should be like this KPop🤪😁 this is them saying they're gonna do what they want.
There is a very good video that explains this song (lyrics & video). It will help you understand the meaning behind the song. The video is called “BTS Idol explained by a korean” by DKDKTV Ps. There’s always a deeper meaning in BTS’ songs 🔥
i'm actually kind of surprised that you picked up so much of the intricacies and nuance of the lyrics and the visuals of the song because generally, with bts, context is **key** in identifying most of the metaphors in their work. great job! you're very smart and intuitive and once again, your remarks on the production were super interesting to hear. thank you for making this video!!

Also fun fact is that section you hear RM saying 'Talkin, Talkin, Talkin" which phonetically sounds like "Toki, Toki, Toki"; toki being the pronunciation for the word "Rabbit" in Korean. So it's kind of a pun/double entendre in that moment.
Thank you. Do you know the surprise about BTS ? See here:ruclips.net/video/12AA8kx5IPw/видео.html
So Taehyung is the one making funny faces to the camera. And it is a troll response to those who call him “weird, immature, alien-like, etc etc” every member has something they’ve been ridiculed for that they’re taking back and being proud of in the video. Loving themselves

And this explanation right here is what I felt the 1st time I saw the video and that's exactly WHY THIS IS MY 2nd FAVORITE BTS SONG!!

@Knox Hill im also curious! 🤣 hmmmm, btw love the reaction!!! 🤍

I’m surprised you don’t mention how badass their dancing is!!! It blows me away!! BTS is sooooo talented - they are humble, amazing singers, amazing dancing, connected to their fans like no other artist.
Actually he focuses more on the beats and the quality of music
The one you were asking about his facial expression is V. He is widely known as the KING of facial expressions while performing and other Kpop idols study his moves and expressions while they are training. He has been labeled “the Idol of Idols”. In this video he is acting kind of goofy to fit the mood. I’m surprised you picked up on it from just a couple of shots. Make no mistake he stands out for his onstage charisma because he FEELS every emotion in the song and it shows. Plus he’s also done acting.

The first guy who rapped is RM (Rap Monster/Namjoon) (2:11)
Second guy who rapped is J-hope (Jung Hoeseok) (3:10)
3rd guy who rapped is Suga (Min Yoongi) (3:48)
The guy with funny facial expressions is V (Kim Taehyung) (5:14)
The guy who sings "You can't stop me lovin' myself" is Jimin (Park Jimin) (5:25)
The guy with red hair and also is in the middle in the first scene is Jungkook (Jeon Jungkook) (8:36)
The guy at 11:26 is Jin (Kim Seokjin)
And there's a total of seven members in the group!

That Indian festival is Holi. Coming from an Indian.
fun facts:

@@blackbeauty5817 its from RSA from the Zulu tribe.
The beat is influenced by Gqom, which is a South African genre.
