he takes turns with marty. that and he sings the notes hes playing. that being said, trying to play some songs give me a literal headache because i cant sing and play and trying to force myself to try feels like im going to have a stroke :/
It's either Friedman/Menza or Poland/Samuelson and I personally think both of them are iconic Megadeth. No other line ups come close. There is a reason fans debate which of those two are better and not even mention other line ups. Chris and Gar helped Megadeth define their sound and put them on the map. Marty and Nick helped Megadeth reach new heights and their true potential.
Signature Thrash riffage Super fast gallops of single notes, and sick powerchord combinations That moment when you just hang gasping for breath, while actually being on the top of the world, gotta be one of the best moments in life
I've said this before and I'll say it again; this is a certifiable master work. From beginning to end, everything about this song speaks to a level of achievement that most bands never reach. Every aspect of this song is spot-on.
@@jery3385 Not sure what happened there, the vocals part might have been edited in after I wrote the comment. I'd never dream of saying Dave's rat voice is better than James' , that'd be a DMT trip indeed lol. I meant in guitar playing James isn't as good as Dave.
This surely had to be the first show of the tour, you would have thought that a song like this would be a song they had every set list right from the start
It's surprisingly comfortable. Make a loose fist and bang it on the table, then roll it forward a bit so your ring and pinky fingers kinda squish into to the table. And that's it!
@@teamatfort444 Yep, it's useless for string muting. He partly gets around that with left hand technique - he uses his fingertips to mute the strings below the ones he's playing - and every so often when he's in between phrases he'll flip his right hand around to mute, but he's acknowledged that he does still get ringing strings sometimes.
I was totally shocked to hear that Nick Menza passed away. Rust in Peace is my third favorite Megadeth record. The live tour that followed the albums release was fucking blistering. Looks like Dave Mustaine is clean at this time. In 1991 his demons took over again and he went back down hill fast.
I remember Adam Curry ( maybe Ricky Rachman) retiring this song as headbanger's ball champion because it was champion for a long time and was never gonna be beaten. Awesome tune.
Holy crap, the first live Holy Wars performance ever!
Would be like a never to be forgotten moment, for anyone there
At least in Ventura...
And then I read the other comments and learned that it was actually the second time ever!
Magical moment nonetheless
@@michaelboyle5805 definitely. I was at the 1st show that tool played Aenima and it is like yesterday. About a year before the album came out.
This song has it all. Speed, insane riffs, cool lyrics, great solos, and killer drumming.
Come on, there has to be more to a song than that.
nocturnalrectum Like what?
AFXAcid37 Cool vocals. Not suggesting that Dave's vocals don't sound cool though. Sometimes he may even be the best!
nocturnalrectum I'll agree with that. His vocals were actually the biggest hurdle I had when getting into Megadeth.
nocturnalrectum and it's called Painkiller by Judas Priest. Killer vocals, killer drums, killer everything. Idk about the lyrics though.
First Mustaine, last Mustaine
@Na Wa lol XD
@Na Wa 😂😂😂
@Jnpm Kemp Dude stop 😂
Is Marty wearing a wig?
@jchncrmncy next thing you know they'll take my jooob awayyyy
Just think, there are people who were actually THERE when Megadeth first played Holy Wars. Fucking legendary footage.
This is the second time they performed it
Is Marty wearing a wig?
@@reggaefan2700 i dont think so. His hair always looks like that in the 90s.
@@reggaefan2700 nah it’s real, if you watch Woodstock 99 he has it cut shorter
I was there in 1998, but not this show. Dang this would have been insane to see live
give me bumps man knowing this is actually the first time they played Holy Wars. one of the best thrash metal song of all time.
The 🐐 thrash song and album
actually this is the second time, first time was in Riverside two days earlier. Watch the “From the Vaults vol 1” video
Damn... Friedman is the best thing that ever happened to megadeth
not going to lie....i like patrelli playing marty's solos more....he changed some spots and it sounds smoother and more progressive.
listen to kiko Lureiro now in megadeth
I thought it was Metallica
(because.. no megadeth otherwise... ... leaves stage..)
sadsadsa asadasd i recommend you serpentine on the way out.
So bummed he didn't record him on his second solo
I cannot til this day figure out how he can sing and play this song at the same time lol fucking unreal
he takes turns with marty. that and he sings the notes hes playing.
that being said, trying to play some songs give me a literal headache because i cant sing and play and trying to force myself to try feels like im going to have a stroke :/
Totally agree!!
i mean, he did write the riffs
The first live holy wars!
Start of the fucking BEST tradition in history. \m/
*second
Cool, this was on Dave's birthday
They played it even faster than the studio version, these guys were ferocious beasts back in 1990
this is just their first time playing it and they're already playing it perfectly!
*second
This was the best line up
The ultimate line up...... Its so heavy and intense even 25 years (and over) Rip Nick!!
FAR AND AWAY the best lineup....'Rust in Peace' and 'Countdown to Extinction'...it doesn't get any better.
Poland + Samuelson > Friedman + Menza
Peace sells line up is better imo
It's either Friedman/Menza or Poland/Samuelson and I personally think both of them are iconic Megadeth. No other line ups come close. I never knew September 13, 1990 was such a historical day.
So we had a 27th anniversary last week :) (sick!)
Coming tomorrow again (today is 9/12/20)
And based on what someone was saying, it was played first two days before on the 11th...of September.
I’m a Metallica fan, but this is legendary footage that needs to be cherished.
3:01 that was so fucking clean
Efeito chorus na medida perfeita! 👌😊
Menza headbanging back there is just showing you, that when he died on stage that sad night of May 21st he went out with a bang.
Saw Megadeth 3 times...twice in 1998. Nick was AMAZING!!!
He died on stage?
He was playing with Chris Poland in Ohm - smoking and heart disease caught up with him unfortunately. Was a pretty heavy smoker and that didn't help.
Ventura Theater + Holy Wars for the first time + on Dave Mustaine's birthday =
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
ikkkk I'm tweaking cause I saw pennywise there like 4 years ago, never knew prime Megadeth was there premiering songs n shit
Nick Menza was a beast.. RIP
Those hanging cymbals are fucking amazing!
Since then, this song was heard by millions people around the world, and played on hundreds of gigs :)
This is my favorite song to watch them play live, the audience always goes nuts over it 😎
Nick always in our hearts
imagining hearing this song for the first time at its debut and before it even came out
I can't believe there is footage of this show! I was there!
Yeah, sure camera guy, focus on the bassist during Marty's second solo. That's what we all wanted to see.
Shalen Maffre yes. It was.
The camera man must be a bassist
I could stare at dave ellefson all fucking day kid
Kasperr I could too, man was sexy as hell when he was young.
Al menos tenemos la filmación deja de quejarte
damn rust in peace is so old and i still listen to it almost daily in 2020
2023...
2024...
This is the same emotion with first time disposible heroes in 1985 at hammer fest, ITS JUST BEAUTIFUL
Fuck Yea!!!!! What a kickass debut! Almost sounded exactly like the Studio Version, unbelievable!!!
Holy wars debut was on Dave's Birthday haha no way, excelent!!!
Oh man I can not get enough of this song! A masterpiece of metal music.
You know stuff’s about to get real when 5:15 comes around

man, its too bad megadeth isnt on the radio anymore
Yup, only thing on is trash today, even new bands deserving of attention don't get the attention they deserve....
I heard hanger 18 on a classic rock station in the Myrtle Beach SC area
@@nbkawtgnobody
Classic rock, old school metal, not anything new.
In Finland, there's one Megadeth song on radio on any given day. Well, usually Symphony or A Tout Le Monde, but sometimes something else as well.
God damn I was really born in the wrong time, I wish I could have attended to some of these concerts :(

Just like James he rocked much harder back then. Dave's old voice is awesome! They had a killer tone too!
@PapaBigBalls 86 Dave owns him easily when it comes to guitar, vocals not really.
@PapaBigBalls 86 lol you wrote this comment under a live Holy Wars performance? Put down that spoon, heroin is bad for you.

Also, I was high and I might have misread things. Essentially you're right XD
This needs to be saved at all costs
This performance is so on point with the album version, that i would think it's playbac even tho i absolutely know it's not
Damn man I wanted to hear that applause at the end 😂
R.I.P. Nick!
Seen em last week, they still kickin ass!!
3 days before I was born, and in Ventura Theatre, close to where I live now. Love it
This video belongs in a museum.
34th anniversary of this song this year😮

This is historic! First time they play Holy Wars live! Please add an info above the video. Millions should see this.

thanks for keeping the camera on the fretboard. ive been looking everywhere for a video to see how he plays this for sure.
Thank you, for this and the whole incredible channel! -Harri from Finland
Thanx for that line up!!! Thanx Nick n peace to you

The way Friedman curves his wrist on his picking hand always looks weird to me.
