The KEY to Winning Team Fights in OW2: The LINE

  • OW2 Macro can be tough... but it can also be absurdly simple (when you look at it the right way). The term "Killbox" is a term that's been thrown around for many years within the Overwatch coaching community, but what is a Killbox, and is it really a good term for how to setup fights? Coach Spilo shares his insight on Killboxes, setting up team fights, angles, and why the "Line" is the key to setting up your victory (in ranked or in scrims!). And yes, that is Johnny Cash in the top left of the thumbnail. Lame joke.

    Spilo, awesome video. Suggestion: when drawing diagrams in paint, take a screenshot of the map then "print screen" paste into Paint. Saves the hassle of sketching the map in Paint.

      i was watching and just about to comment this before I saw your comment. It would do the viewers much better justice to be able to actually visualize the map as we dont need to project a paint drawing onto the map.

      I would suggest using something like FigJam / Figma or Miro. These tools are easy to pick up and will make the job easier (plus the drawings / schemes will look better)

    Love this stuff Spilo, it really prompts the imagination to dynamically highlight space across map geometry based around team positioning mid-match.
    In a way it's like "the line" will manifest itself somewhere along the perimeter of this ever changing shape that we could conceptualize as the resulting intersection of a venn diagram composed not off of simple circles, not quite off of the team's collective sightlines either, but rather off of the team's respective effective ranges within said sightlines.

    Played a few games after watching this vid. It definitely helped me die less because I wasn't over extending! Thanks for the help!
    Also, in the recent SVB podcast, you mentioned a point of learning that helps best but being just a bit challenging, but not too much.
    This is called the zone of proximal development (I'm a high school teacher).
    Also, you sketching while lecturing is called dual coding and very helpful for embedding learning. Doll up your sketches to be even better.
    Keep up the great work. Love your stuff.

    What if you reworked kill box into a venn diagram of teamates FoV+range? The higher the level of overlap the higher the "strength" of that zone. Useing that logic your "line" is more like a gradient.

    Hi Spilo, thanks for making this guide. I have a dilemma though that I would appreciate if you could answer:
    All the examples you provided are from a defender's POV. I have difficulty in trying to translate this to attacking, in particular: What should you do if you're playing on push and your team pushes up WAY past the bot to chase down retreating enemies, and someone should push the objective to make sure you are getting the better spawns/denying enemy forward spawns. Would I be trolling the lobby if I c9 the bot with my team, or if I (even as a support like brig) complete the objective to give us the push progress and spawn advantage? What's the point of getting a team wipe if the bot is still two teamfights away from reaching our barricade and the enemy will still get good spawns?

      1 on cart always. If your team dies 4v5 they are trolling

    • @runeyugi
      @runeyugi Год назад +1

      If you are playing mercy on cart the line of scrimmage is about 20m in front of the bot. If you’re playing ana the line is much farther. The line for the tanks not to cross with an Ana support is as far as the nearest corner the tank can cross.

    • @deusvult6920
      @deusvult6920 Год назад +1

      You should only push up if someone else is on the cart. When you push up you are looking to get picks as you slowly collapse back to the objective as you're pushed out of positions. Ideally you want to try to secure the most advantageous position you can
      Ideally you want to force cool downs out while preserving as many of yours as possible and don't die. So when the team fight actually happens you have the advantage

    This is really good! I have one question because as a healer, I'm having a lot of trouble positioning myself when I play with two characters, specifically: Doomfist and Wrecking Ball. In a game yesterday, I couldn't heal Wrecking Ball all game, and was picked by the whole enemy team the entire time.
    What if the tank wants to dive in but DPS are slow/hitscans/snipers and won't follow? Where to position as a healer, then? Should I switch for mobility, remain with DPS or go in with tank?

    • @sigaev11
      @sigaev11 Год назад +2

      By following this guide, the only person ‘out of position’ would be wrecking ball (not meaning they are making a bad play). Doesn’t mean you can’t always help them with their dive, but generally consider that their kit is suited for quick engagement and disengagement while yours isn’t unless you are on Lucio or Kiriko. In these cases I trust the tank to come back alive on their own while I will support their dives indirectly by shooting enemies that they distract as I remain in a relatively safe position around the rest of the team. It’s a bit of a risk / reward deal. If the chance of you dying is high when you follow the diving tank - don’t, because reward is likely not there to compensate for the risk. Usually a wrecking ball / doomfist player accounts for the fact that not every hero on their team is highly mobile. If more teammates push forward, the risk of you dying there will decrease and the reward (potential value to make) for you as a support will increase.

    might not be the right place to rant about this but.. for the first time i recently hit gm on tank. normally that would be great and i would be happy but lately i've seen so many people in overwatch who magically jump up 3 ranks in a single season that i'm not even sure if i deserve it. seeing people who were ranked platinum for 6 seasons in a row suddenly show up in my masters/gm lobbies makes it all feel meaningless. is it really impressive to climb to gm if a 2000sr overwatch 1 player can do it too? it's just really frustrating as someone who's played competitively since season 1 of regular overwatch because i feel like my goal in all of those years just lost its value now due to this ranking issue..

    • @goosewoman
      @goosewoman Год назад +3

      While it may not feel like the same achievement as before. GM is still top 1%. There are just such a large amount of new users being inserted into bronze that everyone else gets pushed up, considerably. It's not so much an "issue" as it is the intended method of rank distribution in Overwatch. It just looks really fucked because of the massive influx of players on top of previous seasons consistently ranking people too low.
      If you want to achieve a rank that's somewhat analogous with OW1 4k-4.2k, you'll need to hit GM2 at least. Just make that your goal.

      i feel the same thing, i main support i feel like i have gotten better and i have climbed to diamond but im unsure if i got better that much or its too easy to climb the ranks now. the only thing that i focus on now is improving my gameplay instead of looking at the rank.

    • @powertrip8676
      @powertrip8676 Год назад +2

      Maybe, but I would look at it differently. Being in gm now let’s you play with the best players ranked has to offer, with and against. I would use this to your advantage and look to improve from grinding and studying those “real” gm players and who knows when they fix the match making and elo boosting you’ll be the one staying in gm when everyone else who doesn’t belong there is deranking

    • @Htiy

      If you think about it, GM now is like GM closer to the start of OW1 since everyone was ‘new players’ its still gm..

    oh wow, now every lor sr tank in my games will see the thumbnail and title, assume you mean the "objective guide line" and be afk on main furthest away from any cover, never clearing highground again (so basically what they already doin, nvm). Also not enough "please hold the line" on telephone jokes. Funny thing is if im highest player in the lobby and i need to carry before teammates manage to suicide i basically need to know where the lion is and hardoverextend and click heads to start pressure early.
