  • Three founders of the Anticon record label (Doseone, Why?, Odd Nosdam) formed a supergroup in the late 90s called cLOUDDEAD. While their musical output was brief, they made some of the weirdest, and most boundary pushing hip hop of the 00s.

    I feel like the 'physics of a bicycle, isn't it remarkable?' line is sort of talking about how as artists they have to continue to put out art, and as people they have to persevere, or else they'll fall into a rut, just like how when riding a bicycle you have to keep pedalling lest your bike falls over.

    • @fuzzydunlop4513
      @fuzzydunlop4513 4 года назад +1

      Nice take I love that line

    • @alec_baldman
      @alec_baldman 3 года назад

      I always "Physics of a Bicycle" was an optimist take on the line that occurs in their other songs "Physics of a Unicycle". The unicycle bit seemed to be existential angst about life and suicide: like you're forced to be on but falling off is bad too. "Physics of a Bicycle" occurs just in this one place, is performed in an optimistic, major key (unlike the very dark, minor keyed "Physics of a Unicycle") and seems to be jubilant about life.

Everyone who was part of cLOUDDEAD was exceptional, but I feel like Nosdam really carried a huge amount of weight in the group and maybe doesn't get the credit he deserves. That guy is truly one-of-a-kind and hasn't stopped putting out amazing music for a single moment.

    You need to sit with these albums a long time. Ten is a great album. It was, and still is, very intentional and it's mostly about venturing out into the unknown but from their experience. Listen to elephant eyelash and hero for fool. They still recall some of the clouddead lyrics and concepts.

    Their July 17th Peel session is worth checking out too! I loved listening to cLOUDDEAD growing up and the live material is interesting to me now for how it recontextualizes the individual segments within the sprawling collage of their self-titled.
    Agree with you about Ten btw. It has its moments but completely lacks the album structure that made the ST incredible. Makes sense tho because of how they went into the songs for their debut as singles that each acted as a lil mini album.

    I really disagree about Ten, I think that it's on par with and a perfect compliment to the selftitled. There's just some constant sense of the songs always being at the risk of disintegrating to something less structured that becomes an interesting tension.

  • @krTog1
    @krTog1 3 года назад +4

    Kudos on doing your homework here.
    I have to share my two cents: Ten is more accessible production-wise, and the structures are more straight forward than the s/t, which by no means takes away the sheer creativity and willingness to experiment with the sound and lyrics. S/T is more atmospheric and ambient, and the lo-fi feel sometimes makes it harder to absorb to some.
    cLOUDDEAD (the band) is most certainly, the most creative thing related to hip hop that has seen the light of day. I have to mention Subtle, that's a bit different animal but maybe even more creative in a way since it moves away from hip hop in many directions but sometimes tries to do too much at the same moment, if that makes sense. (just my opinion, but I still immensely enjoyed Subtle work). This collective, or whatever you want to call it, was far beyond its time and is an acquired listen, definitely, but you must be willing to explore. Criminally underappreciated as well.
    And no, I don't think they're "cloudrap", they stand in their own "genre" shoes.

    nice documentary.
    just wanted to say, wile considering the album Ten' there are several factors, that you seem to miss.
    why? does and nosdam had progressed as artists, and produced sounds, and ideas infused with the music, musicians, places and cultures, they had interacted with over the years, propelling them to new things.
    its hard to return to passed times as an artist. to recapture, what made the moment special.
    I myself love Ten'; I see it as a self aware, farewell-love letter, to there humble beginnings.
    'sometimes I Feeeel Like.... ima spoooooof... of what I useD to Be'
    almost the perfect mix of getting the feeling of clouddead and at the same time giving us something new.
    maybe a good analogy is this.
    cLOUDDEAD = Evil Dead
    Ten = Evil Dead II
    much love to anticon, inspirational to say the least.

I really love Blood from This Blood in particular. Your video actually made me look more into Viper and there's a bunch of songs that are on my playlist.
    Edit: I live in Houston, Texas. Hopefully I can meet Viper one day and do an interview or convince him to do live performances again. JimmyBreeze 1 and 2 are about a suicide of one of Yoni's friends, actually. Great video though!

    13:13 “...he explains the tolerance he’s built up after being made fun of as a kid.” What? He clearly describes surviving a 4-story fall wearing a space suit. Is video a troll?
    When you don’t connect your interpretations, apparently unrelated to the actual lyrics, to the text, you’re not describing the song, you’re forcing off-topic non sequiturs into your summary of an album.
    This video is really haphazard, awkward, annoying, disjointed, and confused.

      I get this is a running gag of the video, and it doesn’t connect. People really do just make up their own meanings for lyrics, and at times you’re earnestly trying to decode the songwriting, so it’s never really obvious when it’s a joke.
