Florida seems to be in "Ah, whatever!" mode. They don't try too hard if things don't go well. They also still win enough to be in the race for 1st in the division. They would really need to wake up in the Playoffs.
I hope that's the case but I actually think we're currnetly missing key pieces. I've got faith in Zito that he sees this and we could potentially get better at the deadline. But I don't see us being a real contender at the moment.
I wouldn’t have rewarded Seattle for that win. They played like garbage for 55 minutes and Vancouver really gifted them multiple goals. I just don’t buy into anything good for Seattle from that game, but definitely punish Vancouver for that loss…that was ugly
Maybe. But I don’t buy the “gifted goals” argument. The gifts were the turnovers, the players still need to get it past the goalie and into the net. Given SEA’s trouble scoring, those goals weren’t guaranteed ha. It was also an historic win since only two other teams have done that in NHL history.

Yeah when you did your video on Blackwood's new deal I said to myself "WOW! That's a great deal and a very Cap-Friendly hit for the team for a very talented Goaltender." GO AVS!
I think it's a little early but I like the Blackwood deal at the moment. 5 for a good starting goalie is a steal, especially if he keeps playing like this.
I think resigning a goalie while he's playing very well in recent form was not the time to give a 5.25 x 5 but the GA number is going down (per game) and that's a huge improvement for Colorado. They could reach the second round of the playoffs as things stand. Winnipeg and Dallas I feel have the best goalies in that division and best six defencemen, but let's see how often they can score in the playoffs. When the Avs are healthy, their offense is fantastic. 4-1 win at Utah with two empty netters was a harsh result for Utah though.
Sample size is small and he has an injury history , but you have to give the benefit of the doubt to Colorado management , they tend to get it right more often then not
@@MDot97You’re trippin balls. Blackwood is better than Otter from Dallas. Goalies are starting to ask for 10+ a year and Blackwood is like .939 SV% since he came to Colorado and only had a lower percentage because he was playing with the Sharks before that. Get him locked up quick before his asking price gets higher. He’s already looking like a top 10 goaltender
I'm a Vegas and Detroit fan, 1 and 32 LOL. Well, I go to many VGK games here and the team always seems to play over their talent level imo. Bruce Cassiday is a solid coach and the top players like Eichel, Karlsson, Stone, Barbashev are doing their thing but this team always rolls 4 solid lines. Guys like Howden and Kolesar are scoring so the balance seems to be the strength. When Stone pulls a groin every 3 months and then has a miraculous recovery the team doesn't miss a beat. Sometimes they are better without him. The Wings, oh god, where to start? Yzerman can't fix this in under ten years, their talent from the draft has been poor but once Yzerman got the job he's finally making the picks that Kenny didn't make. Yzerman's first 4 years of first rounders are on the team, Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson and Kasper are future stars. Raymond is probably the best player on the team at 22 years old.
Leafs fans, along with Saskatchewan Roughrider fans, are the most arrogant sports fans in Canada. Both are repeatedly guilty of declaring their respective teams as 'Canada's Team'. I believe this is an insult to our national junior hockey team. When TSN still allowed commentary on their website, both Leafs and Riders fans could bash the fans of other teams with virtual impunity! I only cheer for the Maple Leafs when they're playing a sun belt team and, back when I was a CFL fan - which I haven't been for over a decade - I never cheered for the Roughriders, not even when the CFL had American teams!
@@FischerFanIt doesn’t really track for a team (the Riders) from an all-Canada league to call themselves ‘Canada’s Team’. Saskatchewan’s Team, sure, go for it. As for the Leafs, the fans may still be fighting the ancient Upper and Lower Canada battle for the soul of the nation, but the Habs are demonstrably ‘Canada’s Team’. Almost twice the Cups, and 10 Cups since 1967 and the Great Expansion. Les Canadiens are the personification of the beating heart of hockey.

Mark Scheifele's personality issues are problematic, he's showing why he isn't the teams capain, this temper tantrum is unreal. Guy doesn't get his way and he just seems to be taking it out on the league. 9 goals in 10 games, since being snubbed by team Canada. He's 2nd in goal scoring among Canadians. It's not impossible that he has the most goals scored by a Canadian in the league by the time the tourney comes around. This could be a minor scandal for team Canada if he's not on it and they lose.
@@dixonhill1108 Wrong, Scheifele has finally developed an incredible two way game & endured a minor slump prior to final selections, however remains on the bubble as he is playing at an Elite Level. Locker room issues subsided once Squealer Wheeler & Floater PLD were dispatched. Jets were willing to eat the final TWO years of Wheeler's contract exemplifying why he was no longer wanted. As for PLD, Thank you Kings for the wonderful return.
That’s literally why I say the Leafs are the worse franchise in sports all the time, at the end of the day, not winning or making the finals in that long with this kinda of market size is an unimaginable failure. And I just so happen to be a fan of them sadly.

The scary thing isn't that Washington doesn't need Ovechkin. The scary thing is how good will they be after they load up at the deadline and then get Cristall and Leonard for the playoffs?
As a caps fan I'm not too fond of loading up at the deadline. Imo the main factor that has gotten us to where we are this year is unbelievable line chemistry. Our only big weak spot right now seems to be our third line with Eller out sick, and if Leonard is ready for the show then he'll be a great fill for that hole should Eller or some other center get injured. I feel like giving up draft capital for rentals kinda doesn't make much sense.
@rastynicc i think they will buy a rental or two. When you have a team like this, this good, you go for it. They have enough youth and talent they can trade a few picks and not set the organization back. Mangiapane is gone one way or another and if they want to add at the deadline he's the most expendable with the biggest cap hit. Leonard likely takes his roster spot anyway so you're basically getting an additional scorer who can step in and provide injury depth if you make a move. Deep playoff runs are built on depth and secondary scoring. They're going to need offense by committee. I also think Lapierre is likely with a different organization by next October. Just seems like he's become a valuable piece that could be moved for a better fit with the roster. He doesn't really fit in with the team that Patrick has assembled. But yeah if Washington wants to trade a 1st and a 2nd at the Draft, it doesn't hurt their future. They've got very few open spots and a lot of guys competing for them. They can afford to go all in one year.
Love the Power ranking videos, always looking forward to them every week. Also, No hate on the placement of the Leafs either (as a fan of them) I thought they would have dropped a spot or 2, fantastic game against the Red Wings Friday but last night was a big stinker, as always a fair and non biased rankings!
The Blues win both games since the last power rankings, but drop down? I don't think they should've moved up because the wins were against Detroit and Nashville, but dropping down and having Seattle pass them is confusing, especially after Seattle lost to the Avs on Sunday after the last power rankings...
I guess one win against an average Vancouver team makes up for Seattle’s atrocious play over the last month? Agreed that it makes no sense to have them over STL
The Blues wins over last place this week Red Wings and last place a few weeks ago Predators comes after 1 win in the last 6 games which was against the collapsing Rangers.
Get what you’re saying, but guessing in addition to above it might be because it was an historic win - what SEA did has only happened two other times in NHL history 🤔
Agreed. It looks like you read my comment from the last power rankings! As I said, Jets have been playing better than the Kings and Oilers. Seems like you fixed it this week. 😉
i fear a potential presidents trophy-winning golden knights squad particularly because of their very precedented ability to overpower tradition through spite
Spot on for the 1 and 2 spots. Vegas holds a 1 point lead over the Caps with equal games on hand. I always use this measure when looking at the standings. NJ has played 4 more games. Winning has played 2 more games. So will we see a rematch of the 2018 SC?
For any hockey team to be 4-3-5 in their last 12 games is truly frustrating for the fans. Vancouver needs to improve soon or else they are not finishing above Calgary or Dallas or Colorado and going from division winners to golfers in 12 months. Not fun!
If Utah made it to the playoffs I’d be incredibly happy just for that, win or lose. Sadly, if they went up against Vegas they’d probably get obliterated.
The Rangers most recent time in the bottom row prior to this week was Feb 13th 2021. Eastern Conference Playoffs at 35 games: Wildcards Bruins (40) and Senators (38) with Penguins (35) Flyers (34) Blue Jackets (34) within 2 wins, Rangers (33) Canadiens (33) Islanders (33) within 3 wins. The Red Wings (30) and Sabres (28) are likely out. Sorry Western Conference fans, that Wild Card race isn't interesting to me.
And thanks Shannon for holding your ground, enjoyable program you put on even if I disagree on a team or 2, Vegas at 1 for sure, other pacific teams only just behind by a nose....
Thank you for the shout out on Columbus! You have it wrong though. The Jackets are awesome at home 11-4-3 and are terrible on the road 4-12-3. Good news is that the western Canadian swing and West Coast swing is out of the way. bad news is they are 1-7 on back to back but 6 of those 2nd game back to backs were on the road. The schedule gets more kind to the CBJ in January.

I suspect the sharks will rebound a little bit if they keep Askarov up. Lots of one goal games or games they lose in the 3rd. If we don't its fine but if grier gives us a defense makeover in the off season we could be out of the bottom row next year.
So satisfying to see the Kings jump the Oilers, there's still definitely room for them to tighten things up, but if they can do that, and avoid the mid-season slump they had last year, there's hope they can beat the EDM/first round curse
4th in the Atlantic with 4 or 5 games in hand on all three teams ahead of them and the highest rank on the THG Power Rankings board. Best line in the NHL. Vassy getting back to being Vassy. Heddy & Big Mac leading a group of up-and-coming blue liners. Cirelli, Hagel and Paul all taking big steps forward. Geekie and Chaffe showing great promise and growth. Yes the kings could be playing a bit better but Drew Doughty is still rehabbing and they have not figured out a powerplay yet, possibly a PP and a very skilled blueliner coming back starts to make the top row look very fluid
In addition with Drew gone for so much of the season the Kings will have a TON of accrued cap space available at the trade deadline. It's starting to feel a LOT like 2012/2014 in LA again. Just sayin'...
It's sad to see San Jose at the bottom with Celibrini. He has been literally so fun to watch on both ends of the ice. Really hope they build around him because man is he special. Also as a Flyers fan, I really hope Michkov can pick up his compete. Not faulting Torts for his comments about his lack of effort, I just hope he doesn't push the kid the wrong way. Flyers are on the brink of something, just need some more consistency in net and all around, and a first line center
Colorados current goaltending really shines a light on how bad Georgiev was to start the year they went from being out of a playoff spot to just barely in a playoff spot, flip flopping between being above at and below .500 having a lot of ground to cover to now since the trades and acquisition of the lumber yard moving up both the power rankings and the standings being now 4 points behind 2nd place Minnesota and 9 points behind the 1st place jets giving both teams a run for their money especially with the talent they have and how much their depth has been contributing and especially their goaltending improvement I definitely can see Colorado catching that #1 central spot so long as they keep playing the way they are. Let's see where they go for this second half of the season
Florida Panthers in my opinion would be ranked 9th. 4 shutouts in December and lack of tenacity and ability to hit the net. A lot of tips and shots just sailing wide.
I remember when the wings had hasek, osgood, & vernon who played for both the wings & sharks. SJ had belfour, nabakov & irbe who was a fan favourite & not a bad goalie. Scotty Bowman once said "Get a good goalie & a good defenseman & start from there"

I feel like they’re in a “been there, done that” mode. I'm sure they will wake up once playoffs hit.
Tampa did it on their two cup runs. They got blasted chasing history in 2019 and followed it up by finished 3rd twice and winning the cup.
I hope that's the case but I actually think we're currnetly missing key pieces. I've got faith in Zito that he sees this and we could potentially get better at the deadline. But I don't see us being a real contender at the moment.
Being in that mode in December isn't a good thing ... now if it was March, you would have a point on that.
I wouldn’t have rewarded Seattle for that win. They played like garbage for 55 minutes and Vancouver really gifted them multiple goals. I just don’t buy into anything good for Seattle from that game, but definitely punish Vancouver for that loss…that was ugly
Yeah we stole 2 points for sure, but it’s nice to be on the opposite of it usually it’s our defense crumbling under pressure.
Maybe. But I don’t buy the “gifted goals” argument. The gifts were the turnovers, the players still need to get it past the goalie and into the net. Given SEA’s trouble scoring, those goals weren’t guaranteed ha. It was also an historic win since only two other teams have done that in NHL history.

“BUFFALO ALL THE WAY THIS TIME!”
Yeah. A couple of toilet bowl wins and we’re ready for the playoffs!
@ I’m ready to be delusional again.
Leafs fans are the WORST! Let them whine. It’s what they do
Good thing THG forgot about the Monday 23rd loss (during the narration at least… I know he updates daily)

Can’t believe people were sleeping on Tampa. They made some great moves to shore up their defensive play. The Utah trade and mcdonaugh trade paid in spades
McDonough was the best defender for our cups, I was so happy to get him back
Tampa has elite size which wear opposing teams down.
that Utah trade worked well for both teams, Sergys been solid for Utah
@@davidvandervoort4945 Absolutely.
People were sleeping because Vasilevsky was looking questionable in net the last few seasons, especially with that injury. Luckily for him it seems like he's found his game again
Rangers have struggled ever since Drury threatened the players after being 12-4.
If Blackwood maintains his play even for a few years of that deal it’s a steal considering where the goalie market is headed price-wise.

Let’s go Devils!! I’ll take 3 😁
The scary thing isn't that Washington doesn't need Ovechkin.
Scary?? The West teams are licking their chops!!!
@josephkelly9558 I will happily take a Cup Finals appearance thank you very much.

One Seattle win is more powerful than 2 from the Blues. I don't know why.

Spot on for the 1 and 2 spots. Vegas holds a 1 point lead over the Caps with equal games on hand. I always use this measure when looking at the standings. NJ has played 4 more games. Winning has played 2 more games. So will we see a rematch of the 2018 SC?
I also measure a team by how well they play without a key player. The Caps lost Ove, the Knights lost Stone. Both just kept winning.
just because they’re 1 and 2 in december doesn’t mean they’ll be in the cup final 6 months from now😭
@missstar219 I realize that only Toronto can camiserat with the Caps on the amounts of playoff disappointments.
For any hockey team to be 4-3-5 in their last 12 games is truly frustrating for the fans. Vancouver needs to improve soon or else they are not finishing above Calgary or Dallas or Colorado and going from division winners to golfers in 12 months. Not fun!
I always dislike when my team loses on a Saturday night because I know it would affect the power rankings outcome the next morning
Blues are about to go on a 10-4 run and will be above the playoff line on Jan 31.
If Utah made it to the playoffs I’d be incredibly happy just for that, win or lose. Sadly, if they went up against Vegas they’d probably get obliterated.

I saw what happened to Detroit. I commented several times, that when they signed Kane, it was over. But nobody listened. And here we are.

Atlantic, with Pacific as a close second.
