- New York-based attorney Jennifer Bonjean has made a name for herself by taking on high-profile, yet unpopular clients.
She famously represented Bill Cosby on his appeal before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court concerning his 2018 sexual assault conviction, which ultimately got overturned and Cosby walked out of prison a free man.
Now, she's taking on a new client, R. Kelly, who was convicted in September of sex trafficking and racketeering charges, and currently faces life in prison for those crimes.
Bonjean joins Yodit Tewolde on “Making the Case” to discuss why she is defending the disgraced singer.

What they did is bring in people 30yrs ago saying they had sexual relations which was not proven but sounded good to the current trial. That’s why they charged him with the Mann act, not rap- and racketeering. This case will get overturned because of the way they did it

This entire rkelly shakedown was clearly a huge circus and an attempt to destroy him whether he’s innocent or guilty. Omg it’s so obvious… they brought back Aaliyah, put his of sex life on trial, ad used any charge they could to convict him… and all of this heated up after the lifetime docuseries. He definitely did not receive a fair trial. I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.
Heartbreaking it could happen to anyone if they do this to a high profile person and get away with destroying a person's life and career because you hate him...he isn't a saint but he hasn't done anything illegal immoral in many eyes... but you don't go to prison for being immoral or we all would go to jail ...we all fall short at some point in our lives...the ones pointing the finger are the main ones who are doing horrible things behind the scenes...we the people can't allow this to go any further.

No layperson is on the side of injustice no matter how it looks or achieved. Every injustice sets a precedent that ultimately affects us, the lay people. We pay taxes and hence we demand for the Government to held accountable.

The craziest thing about this case is it all played out online for the public to see. But ppl only pay attention to what they care about. Its easy to get emotional without all the facts being presented. Yes the allegations as they stand are indefensible. But after watching this charade play out since 2016 ONLINE, no way in hell Kelly shouldve been convicted on ANY of those charges.

Attorney Bonjean makes some very valid points and that's what experience buys you. While I don't agree with R Kelly's alleged behavior, I do think there's been a miscarriage of justice, and so I'm excited for Attorney Bonjean joining the legal team. R Kelly's case will be overturned. One does wonder why she didn't join the legal team earlier, but it's better late than never.
