Thank you kindly! I had to pick a few, and these seemed right 😁

Also take note of how much wattage for the 3.3/5.0v combined. For modern units it ranges from 100-200W.
Nice show and thanks for the video!

Great point! For the retro systems, though, they rarely get that energy greedy as a modern CPU.

I have an NEC socket 7 board that uses the P8 and P9 power connectors, but it also requires another 6pin connector that has 3 GND pins and 3 3.3v pins. I didn’t have the original supply but was able to make the extra 6pin connector using two of those 20pin ATX to P8 + P9 adapters. Might be useful to some people out there where the motherboard requires an “auxiliary” connector beyond having the P8 and P9 connectors

Great point! Tha is (I think) why the smaller Antec has that additional connector. Was it Socket 5 or 7?

    good run down.
i also like the pico power supplies which ive used to run AT style connectors up to socket 7 for testing. I dont think id use my current one for long term use for the socket 7's but I really like it for 386 and older boards.
If i ever need -5 V then id build one of the voltage blaster boards for the isa slot.
Also learned never swap modular cables

Interesting thoughts on the really older systems. I get not swapping modular cables between PSUs myself. Why take a chance?

Impeccable explanation about classic and modern PSUs !I work in a e-waste center in Brazil and this earlier PS are very common.Trash for others, gold mine for me😂.Got a new sub !

So glad to have you on board, my friend! My passion for these old things is odd at times, as I didn't grow up with them, but got a taste during my 20's and it never faded. Best thoughts to you in Brazil!

Thank you for the detailed explanation.
As I am currently looking for a replacement PSU for my Pentium 2 desktop, your video has been very useful in helping me understand which type of PSU I should choose and which types I should avoid.

There were some early Slot A and Socket A thunderbird cores that a modern PSU won't even run, they use too much on the 5V rail

    • @UncleMikeRetro
      @UncleMikeRetro  Год назад

Right? The size of this PSU did surprise me a bit. I have to make sure that I do not put too much of a graphics load on it.

Those Compaq power supplies will fry any other mobo Compaq liked using proprietary psus

Only if the connector Pinot is proprietary.
