She's amazing. Hey btw do you know if the guitar there is tuned in open G. I seen others do it with open G she but she didn't mention it. I'm learning. Thanks.
I went down to the Crossroads, and by the time I was done with the Devil, he sold me HIS soul!!!! I have been into RJ for a few decades now, and finally starting to learn. Waiting on a Gibson L-1 RJ model as I write this. Glad I checked Rory out. I'll be buying her DVD soon. Great teacher!!!!
Rory is the greatest. In so many ways. She has been a friend for a long time. Her musicianship is of such a high order. That it is a spiritual undertaking. Where she has reached a higher plane of expression. Thru the music . I have the greatest love and admiration for my friend Rory Block always Steve Tessier.
She does do the entire song, this was a sample from her instructional DVD. Awesome teacher awesome player, love the snapping of the strings. Much appriciated from the great white north-Canada
Met her early on in her career. She became over the top interested in RJ, copied with precision the 32 great recordings, and even made close friends of the family. Basically she would have a PhD in Robert Johnson if they had such a course. What's not to like. She was extremely dedicated, played just so well, and lionized RJ for his style, songs, and playing. Incredible to think that I saw her so early on in her career. My hats off to Rory; someone you should try and hear in person.
I happened upon this video "Rory Block Teaches..." purely by accident. She is a very fine teacher. I'll be looking for this DVD advertised by Rory Block. Is it just me? but I tend to avoid different tunings on the guitar other than standard. The irony is, I've been wanting to venture in to slide playing for quite some time but a whole lot of which calls for open tunings. Rory, that's a lovely guitar you're playing. Those inlays! An art object of imagination and beauty.
you said that a guitar song needs to have a drive to it..i didnt think much about it because i make a lot of stoner mellow stuff but then i thought about what you said and it really changed how i play.i think sometimes people are scared of their own voices or instruments and its really groovy that you were able to open me upwhat you said
Rory is an amazing player. I just can't get over her attack! If there's any chance of me ever getting any of her style it's gonna be off of her videos. Wish I got the DVDs instead of the VHS versions! lol. Dang. She is excellent.
shes really good, no matter who plays Robert Johnson you can tell how much they admire what a great talent he was, after all he was the greatest blues man ever, and blues is the foundation of rock and roll...plus quite probably the greatest guitarist, ever
Thank you for the preview. don't mind all the stupid comments. people are strange, when your a stranger, faces look ugly when your alone. women seem wicked, when your unwanted streets seem uneven when your down. ( Jim Morrison) Peace...
rory block is true. ... I mean ... it seems she has a natural enthusiaism for robert johnsons due to her NURTURED love for robs music..... it good to see that because it certainly is rare....
She has talent and conviction Her father was Alan Block who was a famous fiddle payer and sandal maker in the "village" She knows tragedy (won't divulge too much\ more) but she earned the right to sing and play. I tell no lies!
Rory Gallgher once said that blues players dont play guitar 'they hit the bloody thing!' What he meant was to play with energy and emotion and she has that!
She is the only female player I've ever heard that can play this song with authority, and, as she says in the beginning, with the funk, force, and groove the song needs. There's nothing dainty or mannered about the way she plays it-she can hold her own with any male player.
She just may be the reincarnation of Robert Johnson. She has a deep passion for his music. Just as Clapton and countless others. Rory Block is the real deal.
I too disagree with calling on the spirit of the dead but I know impressive talent when I see it. There's nothing I wouldn't do to hang out with her for a while to gleen what I could from her but I'm her age now and my fingers don't work as well as they use to. Besides Rory, you don't need Bob's spirit you've got your own stamp and I love it!
I actually won a RJ portrait painting from a man in a bet, done by a folk artist in New Orleans. He said he used voodoo tunings and don't need no capo..... ....I had seen the picture and took notice the first time ...he obviously didn't look for it when he saw it originally. ......one of my favorite art pieces....
@digitaldown The devil's got money, he's got lawyers, but he don't have music. He hasn't caught Robert Johnson yet, and he never will. The devil numbs you, makes it fake, but if your hair stands on end, and you get a little scared, that ain't lies - that's the truth coming through, the glowing spark of hope that the dark will never swallow. That's what it means to know the blues, and that's why it's holy.
This is the first person I have seen on RUclips who not only knows how to play Robert Johnson but knows how to teach.
Thank you!
Eric Miranda I

@@brunosm.l2267 Figure it out by ear. Just play the root note on the thickest string until your ear tells you it's correct.
@@brunosm.l2267 Yes.
She's very good at playing & at instructing in a manner that even a beginner could easily understand. She's awesome!
she is the best teacher that i have ever seen in youtube, i wish that she is my mother
I remember doing a Robert Johnson song years ago - he was playing it, not me. It was effortless and beautiful. My God it brings tears to my eyes!
Funk and drive are the essence of everything.
Of all the guitar teachers teaching Robert Johnson that I have watched, this is the simplest to learn from. Thanks!
You are amazing! My 11 year old is learning this song for a school project and your video was the perfect teaching tool.
I learned more about Robert Johnson's playing in this one video than a hundred others I've watched.

I love playing Robert Johnson and now realise I need to up my game. More punch required. Clapton employs this well. Great stuff thanks.

Your detailing is wonderful & Instructive like few others ,Congratulations

It takes a big person to admit they made a mistake. Glad you enjoyed it!

shes really good, no matter who plays Robert Johnson you can tell how much they admire what a great talent he was, after all he was the greatest blues man ever, and blues is the foundation of rock and roll...plus quite probably the greatest guitarist, ever
Thank you for the great tips, so tough to play it just like him, it's such a mysterious cool song that's like a dream
Great talent. Thanks for sharing such an exciting sound!
WOW! I love your in-depth Teaching Method. Thanks.

I'm an electric guitar luthier; but I gotta tell ya, I'm really digg'in your acoustic guitar!
Very nice. Why not do the entire song. You left me hanging. Never mine the twit with his listening problem below
this is an awesome lesson thanx really enjoyed it.
rory block is true. ... I mean ... it seems she has a natural enthusiaism for robert johnsons due to her NURTURED love for robs music..... it good to see that because it certainly is rare....
That's the real thing - Great Post... Thank You!!!
Beautiful!

@digitaldown Yeah that might be true, but what if you dont have anything to sell??
Rory!! I love you.
You should know I am her husband...How do you dare??!?!
Recently, I ordered her video at homespumtapes, but noreply......
She has talent and conviction Her father was Alan Block who was a famous fiddle payer and sandal maker in the "village" She knows tragedy (won't divulge too much\ more) but she earned the right to sing and play. I tell no lies!
Thanks for mentioning is in open G at the end of the video xD
Rory Gallgher once said that blues players dont play guitar 'they hit the bloody thing!' What he meant was to play with energy and emotion and she has that!
What is that called at 3:29 when you do the same chord up the neck.
+clowntrooper61 A walkdown.
Blargkkake Thanks
+Blargkkake Its a turnaround.
@bluesfreak101 arent you listen she says shes in open G plus that the most typical key to play the blues.
Yeah he played it open a and capo'd the second fret to play it in b. This sounds like it but just a full tone down
I love her music. I favorite is her version of Moons going down and walking blues
She is the only female player I've ever heard that can play this song with authority, and, as she says in the beginning, with the funk, force, and groove the song needs. There's nothing dainty or mannered about the way she plays it-she can hold her own with any male player.
100% in agreement.
why would anybody hit "dislike" uhhhhhhggggggg.. great job.
/c
great lesson!
great lesson...thanks
This woman is impassioned!!!
3:16 you might wanna practice this. Ya think?
Does anybody know if the whole song is taught on the DVD or if it is just the intro?
Thank you for the lesson :)
She just may be the reincarnation of Robert Johnson. She has a deep passion for his music. Just as Clapton and countless others. Rory Block is the real deal.
YOU
ROCK
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A lot of stuff going on here nice guitar work. I Think I like it spirit or no spirit.
naah dont have what it takes to be a great guitarist, just passion, ya know wht im sayin.
what is that thing that you use on your finger to make that sound? (sorry kind of a newby to blues sounds!)
It's called a slider
Taylor Childs
A bottle neck
Salih Kusur Thank you!! I've always wanted to know what that thing was!!! lol now i can go and get one! :)
I too disagree with calling on the spirit of the dead but I know impressive talent when I see it. @inzotic open g tuning
you can read it! on video
@doublej706 ... Actually she derives a greater part of her music fro Charlie Patton. (she said)
so metal slide is best ?
I love her 😍
--- Very nice ! ---
what note is the guitar tuned in?
Her name is actually Aurora... maybe not a very bluesy name but it could be a Scott Joplin Rag? Perhaps Aurora Bouquet?
She's an interesting character, and probably the only woman I've seen that does such a great job at playing Robert's stuff.
@digitaldown you got that right
What tuning is this?
love her playing but I read that Robert Johnson didn't use a capo.
I believe one of the 2 known pictures of him shows a capo on his guitar.
Robert's spirit can be found traveling the country in a Greyhound bus.
I went down to the crossroads at midnight to sell my soul to the devil but I got mugged
I'd sell my soul to Rory Block, Goddess.
I'm scared of ghosts so no, the spirit of Robert johnson can go help someone else, while I stick to my own soul.
Speaking generally.. not abou this dvd. Where the hell do people get wierd from... she is amazing.
that guitar is cool
you are my idol.
Sounds to me that Robert Johnson wasn’t the only one who went to the crossroads
Rory is one of the greatest, along with Stefan G.
Epic
she's cool!
@digitaldown

Ubu987 well said
Cocaine is cool. She digs it, Pray to Robert Johnson after a line as you pick up your guitar. Best lesson ever!
it it hard getting a guitar to open g
Play it sister.....
Why?
