One huge advantage this rollable has is it's not as bulky and pretty slender for its futuristic form. Although there's a big caveat, the most fragile part which is the screen is fully exposed like og Mate X. IMO foldy tablet still the safer choice but this is exciting nevertheless. Glad there's plenty of outside the box thinking in mobile industry. Cheers ...
The big difference is that the soft display is on the INSIDE of those phones, so less prone to scratches (which you can do with a fingernail). It's very cool but I wouldn't go as far to say it's more usable. I don't actually think motors or the rails will be an issue (unless grit can get in and seize one of the rails, which with that edge as he described it's possible), it's just having the screen on the outside that reduces its longevity.
It's not the brand that gets me, it's the tech. This is cool looking and all but we're not at a point that you can have a soft screen like that on such a pricey device in your pocket yet.
The smart thing about it is that since humans can't handle folding screens without breaking them, then make the folding process automated improves the lifetime

I feel like the rollable smartphone form factor theoretically makes more practical sense than folding phones. But folding a phone open and close is more physically satisfying than clicking a button to expand its screen.
The SOUND of a foldable closing is cooler but rollables LOOK more futuristic. Regardless, Z Fold 2 and Mate X2 are more durable and practical at the moment.
Rollable Phones > Foldable Phones Feels way more practical than just folding your phone in half to get a few gasps. Plus the design factor is just so much better!
We still made the cars work for surprisingly long enough, despite having hundreds of moving parts. Which means it's only a matter of time before these things are durable enough for the mainstream audience.

Oppo are making groundbreaking steps with screen technology. This and the Find N are already refined years beyond what other company efforts are. The only issue with this particular one is dirt getting down into the cavity where the test of the screen is housed.
This looks amazing. However, having been using the fold 3 for over a year now, I see how this would be scary to take outside with the soft screen facing outside. The folding feature provides protection to soft foldable screen. Maybe one day when the screens are way sturdier.

I think this will end up like the phone pop up camera. More moving parts taking up more space making it less reliable and less space for motherboard and battery. Plus a vulnerability to dust and sand and maybe sacrificing water resistance
Watching this on my Samsung Z Fold 4, my biggest concern is the tiny motor inside the device. If it ever decides to grind to a halt after heavy use, how will it be fixed? How will it be replaced? If it can be saved, then how much would we have to pay for it to be fixed?
I love the potential for this technology. I always wanted the rollable commuinication devices from "Earth: Final Conflict". There's a lot of potential for improvements in future generations, but I would take this over a folding phone anytime :-)
