As someone 5 years into a professional drumming career, all I can say is,
Not only is every second of this profoundly invaluable advice,
But your teaching method / way of speaking / presentation,
in my opinion, couldn’t possibly be any better.
Concise, Kind & Warm, & full of passion and wisdom.
You’re truly a gift to the musical community man ✌🏽❤️

Yo I just love that "play more" I had a phone call with Devon Taylor and I asked him "so what fundamentals did you practice" and he said "nah I didn't do any of that, that crap's boring!" Instead he mastered a whole show from artists like destiny's child, stevie wonder, ect ect ect. He was always playing gigs and in his shed for hours "till I was tired". Same with Travis Barker, except he learned and mastered a few exercises that've taken him such a long way. Thanks alot for sharing Jeff, I really needed this video! I'm off to watch the rest of the video!!

So great. It reminds me of the Buddhist proverb "Enough is a feast." Not the exact same idea, but we live in a scarcity mindset so often and I love this connection to how it hinders even our art. Thank you!

Brilliant video! The THIRD advice to "Play what's within my control" is a cure for my drumming that I need to use. Seemed like you were describing me - I analyze and critique everything I'm doing DURING THE PERFORMANCE, on the stage. It's demolishing and demotivating as hell. I have to try and cure that, for sure.
And second advice was surprising as well - I play music way less than I'm practicing technique and that's dumb.
Thanks, Jeff. And also in the description the snare is spelled as "SAKE", I guess the second "A" was lost, heheh.

This is a brilliant lesson and a point of wiew! Thanks Jeff! Sometimes just breaking down grooves to little bits (hihat 16th notes, ghost notes on snares ect) and getting the right feel is much more effective than just practicing just as much in short practice session lets say 3 hours practice slot in the rehearsal space.

  • @lowaimnobrain
    @lowaimnobrain Год назад

Man this is a really interesting video to have found today.
Tomorrow morning i'll have been playing for.. WOW a whole TWO WEEKS. Yeah sure, not long but i've done this journey before (20 years on and off with the guitar and some piano).
I woke up a few days ago and had that absolute pit in my stomach of how high the climb can be to getting where you want, but I decided that i just didnt care, and I was going to work on perfecting the material i'd already picked up. Lay that brick says Will Smith.
The other thing that happened today, is that instead of just practicing (your warmups, some songs I can handle), I stuck on a drumless jam track, well I went through a bunch of them and found myself just playing. Playing for the first time and it was the most fun i've had in years. I got to put all the previous 2 weeks of practice to some use, swapping between beats, trying out fills, trying to come up with my own little fills and embellishments to the grooves, taking notes away all that. I Really felt things snapping together in my brain properly and even sloppily landed my first 32nd note fill around the kit.. just playing like a kid! amazing.
The last video clip with Kenny Werner might actually be the most powerful criticism of me i've ever heard. I immediately devalue anything I can play, it's a criminal failing on the guitar for me too. I torture myself to play things that are out of reach, figure out how to do it after a few weeks or whatever, and then I just ditch it. Value gone. Absolutely diseased mindset but i didn't know how to confront it other than trying a new instrument. Just start from the bottom again and try to enjoy myself on the way up this time. I know that trying new things is always suprising, but finding this channel, and then this video, writing this comment before finishing the video.. hitting play and hearing Kenny Werner talk. God damn. It's hit me really hard. I don't think I've even strummed a full song for around a decade at this point.
It's not some wild unknown tip but I'd just like to add for anyone who might make it to the end of this comment, give yourself some rest, recognise that some problems take a few nights of sleep to solve. Don't totally step away from the problem, but give yourself permission to just need a bit more time sometimes. Even on some multi-month breaks from guitar I've come back and found something that used to be extremely hard to play, feel almost easy (Tim Henson gave me multiple existential crises lmao..).
    Good luck to everyone.

And wow I also really love all those references to master musicians/performer’s philosophies. Those were some really great choices and shows how much thought you put in to crafting these videos. Jeff, the information that you impart in this video may be the most valuable way of improving my drumming while having more fun. I find that there are more skills to practice than there are hours in a day. I have struggled with how to combine individual skills with the ability to lay down a consistent groove or to feel comfortable moving around the kit when playing. I am now looking for ways to play more, practice less.
