I hope you all enjoy this one! If you'd like to take your drumming further, you can book a one-on-one online lesson with me on my website JeffRandallDrumming.com.
As someone 5 years into a professional drumming career, all I can say is, Not only is every second of this profoundly invaluable advice, But your teaching method / way of speaking / presentation, in my opinion, couldn’t possibly be any better. Concise, Kind & Warm, & full of passion and wisdom. You’re truly a gift to the musical community man ✌🏽❤️
Yo I just love that "play more" I had a phone call with Devon Taylor and I asked him "so what fundamentals did you practice" and he said "nah I didn't do any of that, that crap's boring!" Instead he mastered a whole show from artists like destiny's child, stevie wonder, ect ect ect. He was always playing gigs and in his shed for hours "till I was tired". Same with Travis Barker, except he learned and mastered a few exercises that've taken him such a long way. Thanks alot for sharing Jeff, I really needed this video! I'm off to watch the rest of the video!!
Finally, some solid, simple, relevant to everybody piece of advice about mental state, that pretty much lays the foundation for a solid, linear playing progression. You've earned me as a subscriber. Hats off.
Holy cow. So glad you made this video. My inner critic is ALWAYS pushing me to do more than I’m comfortable with, and I never focus on breaking them down. No wonder my fills suck. This definitely helps.
So great. It reminds me of the Buddhist proverb "Enough is a feast." Not the exact same idea, but we live in a scarcity mindset so often and I love this connection to how it hinders even our art. Thank you!
Brilliant video! The THIRD advice to "Play what's within my control" is a cure for my drumming that I need to use. Seemed like you were describing me - I analyze and critique everything I'm doing DURING THE PERFORMANCE, on the stage. It's demolishing and demotivating as hell. I have to try and cure that, for sure. And second advice was surprising as well - I play music way less than I'm practicing technique and that's dumb. Thanks, Jeff. And also in the description the snare is spelled as "SAKE", I guess the second "A" was lost, heheh.
Hey Jeff I have been playing drums for 1 year. My drum teacher talked to me about how to set goals for my practice time . This video is very helpful! I will apply your advice to my practice from now on. I know I will get better!! Thank you!! 🥁🥁
Jeff, you’re such a great resource. If one of my students ever asked what channel to watch if they could only pick one, I would refer to yours, no doubt. And I will definitely watch this video a couple of times to let it all sink in. Great tips and well explained. I also have a personal goal of reaching out to you to plan a lesson soon! Need to get some more of that Randall-input 🙌🏻
Thought provoking…. I’ve played guitar 30 years now, and started playing drums about 8 years ago (which made my guitar playing waaaaay better). I’m also a juggler, stilt performer and fire dancer….and these insights speaking from those platforms are definitely going to inform all my creative avenues of expression… Thanks for sharing…. I’ve not regretted clicking on any of your videos yet Jeff…
best video I've seen about halftime shuffles and it's not even a halftime shuffle video. your content and playing is fantastic. all great advice. thanks!
You're a great talent as a teacher, not only as a drummer. I discovered your channel yesterday, I'm a 55 year old drum teacher with almost two decades of teaching experience and what you say in this video, but also your whole approach is golden. Very musical, very focused, very "in the real world". Starting September I'm gonna recommend your channel to many of my students. Thank you so much for your input, Jeff.
Hi Jeff, I'm glad that I've found your great teaching advice, I'm 71 and learning to play the drums, I'm really enjoying this and your videos here are of great help to me. Thank you 👍
Hey Jeff, great wisdom simply put and collected to one short lesson…respect! Always looking forward for another lesson from you, greetings from Czech Republic ;)
Great stuff, brother! I’ve been focusing on learning so much, that I’ve not be focusing on my grove and playing. The times when I’ve really focused on getting in the grove are the times I’ve played my best. Great lesson!
Thanks Jeff for breaking it down for me & many other beginner/intermediate drummers. You go to crawl before you walk. I will be doing that before moving on. I'm for sure startin warming-up exercises!
Hey Jeff, really appreciate your care and approach to drumming. I’ve been playing for nearly thirty years and always find your content refreshing and articulate. Just wanted to say, be encouraged! You’re doing a fantastic job with your contributions to the drumming community. Keep it up!
Jeff I just want to thank you for all the inspiration you give me dude, I can't make it through any of your videos without running to the kit, playing and practicing, then jumping back into the videos, getting sound advice, and I think this video just sent off a huge light bulb in my tiny noggin! Again, hope your well out there and thank you, you're an amazing drummer!
This is a brilliant lesson and a point of wiew! Thanks Jeff! Sometimes just breaking down grooves to little bits (hihat 16th notes, ghost notes on snares ect) and getting the right feel is much more effective than just practicing just as much in short practice session lets say 3 hours practice slot in the rehearsal space.
Man this is a really interesting video to have found today. Tomorrow morning i'll have been playing for.. WOW a whole TWO WEEKS. Yeah sure, not long but i've done this journey before (20 years on and off with the guitar and some piano). I woke up a few days ago and had that absolute pit in my stomach of how high the climb can be to getting where you want, but I decided that i just didnt care, and I was going to work on perfecting the material i'd already picked up. Lay that brick says Will Smith. The other thing that happened today, is that instead of just practicing (your warmups, some songs I can handle), I stuck on a drumless jam track, well I went through a bunch of them and found myself just playing. Playing for the first time and it was the most fun i've had in years. I got to put all the previous 2 weeks of practice to some use, swapping between beats, trying out fills, trying to come up with my own little fills and embellishments to the grooves, taking notes away all that. I Really felt things snapping together in my brain properly and even sloppily landed my first 32nd note fill around the kit.. just playing like a kid! amazing. The last video clip with Kenny Werner might actually be the most powerful criticism of me i've ever heard. I immediately devalue anything I can play, it's a criminal failing on the guitar for me too. I torture myself to play things that are out of reach, figure out how to do it after a few weeks or whatever, and then I just ditch it. Value gone. Absolutely diseased mindset but i didn't know how to confront it other than trying a new instrument. Just start from the bottom again and try to enjoy myself on the way up this time. I know that trying new things is always suprising, but finding this channel, and then this video, writing this comment before finishing the video.. hitting play and hearing Kenny Werner talk. God damn. It's hit me really hard. I don't think I've even strummed a full song for around a decade at this point. It's not some wild unknown tip but I'd just like to add for anyone who might make it to the end of this comment, give yourself some rest, recognise that some problems take a few nights of sleep to solve. Don't totally step away from the problem, but give yourself permission to just need a bit more time sometimes. Even on some multi-month breaks from guitar I've come back and found something that used to be extremely hard to play, feel almost easy (Tim Henson gave me multiple existential crises lmao..). Good luck to everyone.
One of the best videos I've seen about practicing intelligently and with purpose. This would make a GREAT clinic idea for PASIC or NAMM, Jeff. (Maybe something you'd consider?) I would love to see more emphasis at these professional conferences surrounding good practice strategies and holistic pedagogy.
That was some really solid advice. Probably gonna carry it w me for all of my days. No one really talks about these stuff that much, and i really needed to hear that for myself. Good stuff mate and keep up the awesome work
Thanks Jeff, this video has been very helpful to me, especially the last tip. Lately I've noticed that I overthink every move I make while playing and it kills my groove. I will practice to reach that state of mind while playing
Awesome dude! Great mindsets to take into the practice (play) room and as always, super relatable and practical examples. And wow I also really love all those references to master musicians/performer’s philosophies. Those were some really great choices and shows how much thought you put in to crafting these videos. It makes a big impact. I mean like these are major concepts that make major impressions on aspiring musicians for the better in my opinion.
Hey Jeff, always looking for your videos, each and every one is so valuable and inspirational. BTW you are too modest to say that your drumming is straight forward, I wish that some day I reach a level close to how you sound on the drums. Thanks
Jeff, the information that you impart in this video may be the most valuable way of improving my drumming while having more fun. I find that there are more skills to practice than there are hours in a day. I have struggled with how to combine individual skills with the ability to lay down a consistent groove or to feel comfortable moving around the kit when playing. I am now looking for ways to play more, practice less. So, thanks!
Man that was inspiring and useful! Been playing for 30 years, even recorded a hit song (in Sweden) in the early twothousands. But, I only started getting into practising rudiments and stuff recently. The approach in this video really made me understand how to use my existing skill level to move forward without loosing confidence. Thank you!!
such a helpful informative video. a lot of these ideas resonate with me and im sure they do with others. such great and inspirational advice and ideas. love it
Great vid Jeff, love your work. Practice has always being a choir for me so i always play what i want to practice with a little fun in-between works for me. Looking forward to your next inspirational upload. Many Thanks

That snare sounds incredible!
This might be the best drumming advice I've ever heard. Thank you for everything, I've learned a lot from you.
Wow. This brings so much into focus. Seriously one of the best videos on drumming I've ever watched. Thanks Jeff.
I see a Jeff Randall video, my day is f’in MADE!!!

Dang dude, this might be the most valuable 13 minutes any musician could spend on RUclips! Inspirational stuff!
Holy cow. So glad you made this video. My inner critic is ALWAYS pushing me to do more than I’m comfortable with, and I never focus on breaking them down. No wonder my fills suck. This definitely helps.

‘Brick by brick’ what great advice❗️thank you so much Jeff ✌️
I can practice with your lessons every day.

Omg, that Kenny Werner concept..
Great call to action. I know what I want to add into my playing and just haven't taken the time to play with it. Thanks Jeff!

Big thanks Jonas! Reach out anytime bud.
Thanks Jeff, this video is very helpful for me with my current drum practise journey. Much appreciated
Last piece of advice is worth 1000 lessons!!!!
Beautiful lesson. Way better than just chops, chops and more chops! Keep up the excelent work!

Great to be back Ed!
This guy makes great videos. Straight forward and comfortable. Full up pragmatic and useful.
Was perfect analogy....then Will had to go and smack Chris not long after! 🙂
Right?! I've always admired Will but he's clearly struggling these days. Hope he can turn it around.
But, It was the most perfect slap in the world. There is not a better slap, ever.
Hi Jeff, I'm glad that I've found your great teaching advice, I'm 71 and learning to play the drums, I'm really enjoying this and your videos here are of great help to me. Thank you 👍
