A pair of women echo, reflect and shadow each other in Alejandro Cerrudo’s intimate, encrypted first duet for female dancers. Berlin-based composer Nils Frahm’s progression from classical student - scholar Nahum Benari was an early teacher - to contemporary creative artist mirrors Cerrudo’s own path into and through choreography.

I have been lucky enough to see this performed live twice, and each time interpreted a different meaning.I think female duets are so fascinating because there is not already an assumed relationship, as with a man and woman, where romance is expected. The audience is more receptive to the idea of finding a different story.

I totally agree! There are so many preconceptions we have to get past to delve deep into dance. Female duets are one way of freeing the audience from preconceived notions of relationship. There are times when we may want to project ourselves onto the performances, but other times we want the dancers to hold the quill, to write on our soul as we surrender to words without words.
