  • I picked up a used 2014 V-Strom 650 Adventure Motorcycle and have been really enjoying it. I compared a lot of different motorcycles including, KTM, BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Triumph...etc and decided on the Suzuki V-Strom as the best used purchase for myself. In this video I go over why this might be the top value used adventure motorcycle you can buy

Love my 2005 vstrom 650, bought it with 23.000km in 2010. Now 12 years later I still own it with 114.000km 👌🏻 did 3 laps on the Nurburgring, not the fastest laps but with a big smile 😎 (videos on my channel) 😇

You have absolutely hit your mark. The 650 Vstrom is the best bike for the money - period. It will do all the things you want to do without question. I have ridden one to Fairbanks, Alaska and all over California. It will absolutely tour. It's not a Gold Wing, but it will get the job done reliably and comfortably - focus on reliably. I liked my first strom so much I just bought another newer one and still ride it every day and I'm 75 yrs old. Is it exciting - well, no, not really, but it is fun, and above 6000 it really picks them and lays them down. Congratulations. Both my stroms were equipped similar to yours - you always want to look for one with all the goodies.

I just bought the exact same bike as yours! Same gear and everything. I did the research just like you and came to the same conclusion. I live in NYC and what i did not expect of this bike is how well it rides in the city. Its an absolute pleasure to ride through traffic, over potholes and tourists

I bought a 2009 650 V strom and it's been quite reliable. Easy to roll up the miles. I do get a buzz in the right side of the handlebar that numbs my hand after few highway miles. I paid 3500 dollars and it had 11000 miles on it when I bought it.. It had Givi sidebags and top box.. so easy to use while traveling. My son has 1290 super duke and has no luggage capacity . He uses me and my vstrom as a mule while we ride.. Ride it..Enjoy it..it's a good bike..

I realize this is an older video, but here a pro tip when it comes to selling an accessorized used bike; remove as many as you can and sell them separately. Half of Retail is what you should shoot for. This bike is worth what the bike is worth, and the accessories are worth more separately.

Great video! I bought my 2012 650 new and have it decked out similar to yours. Rode it from TX to AK round trip in 2014, which was the reason I bought it in the first place. The bike performed so well that I have continued to travel on it each summer since. I have other motorcycles that are more exciting and have more character that I use for most of my local riding but the VStrom has taken me all over North America reliably and on a budget and is my weapon of choice for long mileage days. One of the best motorcycles you can own!

It’s a great bike. Lots of fun to ride. Had an 06, now have the 2012. I’m well over 250lbs and no issues. Dollar for dollar best all round bike. Not exceptional at anything, but great at most things. It’s a Swiss Army knife. Agree - nice to have an option on roads and off-road. You’ll ride with a smile more often, especially when you find those new side roads and know they are an option.

I get 65-70 mpg UK (55-58 mpg US) which gives not far off 300 mile tank range. The V twin gives it a lovely laid back character that makes for relaxed riding longer distances but it does have some go when you need it. It's physically big which gives good road presence. I have the same screen, centre stand, oxford heated grips, hand guards, trunk, ride all year in UK & I don't know another bike that would be as good for the money - paid £3300 for my 2012 one 18 months ago. All day comfortable, perfectly happy doing a bit of off road within reason, very good for the money...

YES - The Vstrom is the best bike, or close to it, for the type of bike it is. Not because own one, but I bought it because of so many owners' review. I bought it brand new, from the dealer, 2017 Vstrom 650XT when it was 2 years old - setting on the dealer's floor- unsold - $7000 out the door (I paid the tax when I got to my home state). I did drive near 2,000 miles round trip to get it, but worth it. I've only owned a few bikes, but I've ridden many more... and I love the Vstrom for road and easy dirt/gravel and forest roads. I live 5 miles from pavement in SW Colorado, so 10 miles of gravel county road every time I ride. Handling, lack of vibration, buttery smooth transmission, more than enough power, very comfortable seat (I added a Sit-N-Fly seat cover), takes twists like a sport bike and then, of course, the legendary reliability. I am 6'3" and 215 lbs so I lowered the pegs then raised the bars 2 inches with Rox Pivoting bar riser. I added T-Rex crash bars and skid plate, the Give luggage, with QD racks, and top case. I really can't think of a better setup. Only short trips so far, but SO comfortable! I stand more than average (bad knees and back surgery - so standing about 10% - really needed the risers & lower pegs - can't bend over much when standing - AND I'M 73!). Hope to go to Alaska soon, maybe 2022. I can easily get 55 mpg and 60 if I really baby the throttle. I can't think of much I'd want to change. I hope you like your bike as much as I love mine. - GeezerWheels

I have now a 2018 Versys 650 LT and a 2014 V-Strom 1000, sold the V-Strom 650 a year ago and the 1000 is for sale, i like the stiff suspension and better brakes from factory of the Versys, Ergo is a lot better for me on the Versys as the reach of the handlebar is a lot closer, i did a 19 inch front wheel conversion on mine :D
I may buy another DL650 in the future i really liked that bike but the long wheelbase felt like i was riding a tandem bicycle, the Versys is more flickable

Probably the best all around bike for the price!
After a major accident whith the 650 I went straight to the 1050 xt, under 3.000 rpm it feels like the 650 after that a different story...
V strom is a reliable and solid bike it will get there all the time and put a big smile on your face!

09:16 - "Do you think the V-Strom 650 is "potentially" the best dollar for dollar used motorcycle you can buy for adventure riding?" My experienced answer - YES, on the street end of the spectrum. It just doesn't have enough ground clearance to be great off-road, especially considering the consequences of a hard bottoming on the engine, pipe or oil filter. Even a good metal bash plate can't completely guaranty you won't suffer severe damage to these critical parts if you push the bike on seriously uneven or rocky terrain. The rather long wheelbase doesn't help in this regard either. If you are looking to do mainly asphalt with just enough off-road capability to connect routes, explore fire roads, and go into the woods deep enough to find that ultimate, secluded camp spot for the night, the Wee-Strom will be VERY difficult to beat, especially considering the average lifespan of the bike and the extremely low cost of buy-in, maintenance, operation and insurance. It also has the sweetest, most capable and longest-lived engine for street/highway/light trail use of all the 650's in my opinion.
If you are patient, diligent, willing to drive a few miles to get it, and are quick to close a deal on the phone, you should be able to find a well-equipped and farkled, 1st or 2nd generation Wee with plenty of life left in it for well under $5,000.00. If you can live with some cosmetic flaws you can probably spend a lot less. Right before the pandemic I bought a fully equipped, 2013 ABS Adventure model with 10,000 miles on the odometer for $2900.00. That is pocket change in the lightly used adventure bike world. It had very minor cosmetic damage from falling off the kickstand once on the driveway. If the fellow hadn't shown it to me I might not have noticed it for a month or two. It was six hours away, but what is twelve hours of your life for something you plan to keep and enjoy for 10 years or more? It certainly helps that you probably can't find a better 650cc adventure bike for the purposes I mentioned at ANY cost. There are better multi-cylinder adventure bikes for serious off-road work, but this is a somewhat different category of motorcycle than the Wee. Most of them probably won't last as long either, and are much more expensive to buy, operate, maintain and insure than the Wee-Strom.

reading this makes me happier that I bought mine 2014 V-Strom 650 in august 2023, it has 30 000 km on it, Givi top box and crash bars, as well as Oxford heated grips. I've just installed a hybrid battery in it, which is way better than both lithium and AGM standalone batteries, and I'm sure I'll use the bike way more than I drive my car, which I drive a lot, like 3-4000 km each month, but I can't spend as much time in my car if I'm supposed to use the bike, tho xD I love being on the road for extended time, so my car has upgraded car audio system

@@lassebrustad It's just like stealing!! I've been an avid motorcyclist for well over 50 years. I have owned over 40 bikes in that time. I have five bikes now, including an SV650 with the same engine 😎. And the Wee-Strom is one of my all-time favorites. GREAT gas mileage too. I'd take mine anywhere, except serious goat trails. As long as it is called "a road" - ANY ROAD - I'm good. Asphalt, gravel, dirt, even TERRIBLE dirt "roads" are no problem. It's also far and away the best commuter bike for getting me work and back that I've ever had. Wifey and I have even done a bit of 2-up weekend touring on it. She loves the back seat with the genuine Suzuki factory optional tail box {SW-Motech} with backrest.

@@ralphcantrell3214 it feels so good to know, because I bought it for cheap compared to other bikes at the same age and size. I didn't really research at all before buying it, except that I wanted a bike with somewhere around 70 hp, not too old, and as cheap as I could find locally. I bought mine as a beginner bike, heavy weigth beginner bike, but after I bought it, I've barely seen anyone say anything bad about it at all, other than Harley dudes laughting of it xD but I'll laught at them when their engines fails, which ofc will happen multiple times before my bike should be having issues xD

It quickly became my daily and without a doubt one of my most used bikes over my dual sport and cruiser.

Enjoyed the video and your thought process. I just bought a 2020 Wee Adventure, I can't afford a dirt bike and the road bike and and and... So I'm all in with the 650 V-Strom to do everything for me which is to ride for recreation in my backyard of Southwest Idaho, Northern Nevada, eastern Oregon- on the highway and then be able to go up a dirt road to keep exploring until it's past my skill level or the bikes ability - no radical off-roading but at least I don't have to stop when the pavement does. I'm trying to get my friends who have cruisers and touring bikes and Harleys to do just what you did and get a used 650 V-Strom so they can go with me, I can go wherever they can (just without the image) but they can't go where I want to go i.e. fire roads etc. The cost of accessories, tires etc is killing me though LOL. Which reminds me what kind of tires do you have on it? I am having fun with endless research on what I want to add to it next and I'm spending more time youtubing than riding lol. Thanks again for the good insightful video.

It came with full Suzuki luggage (hard bags and trunk) with tall screen. And my Speedo is 5mph off also.
I get a major drone at 5000 rpm with the hard luggage on. Take the Suzuki hard bags off and drone goes away.
I bought the bike to take with me when camping with my RV. I put knobby tires on it to explore dirt roads.
But as far as a adventure bike it’s just to damn rough off road. Even easy dirt roads with some pot holes.
It really needs better suspension for even dirt roads.
I still think it’s a great little bike.
As far as riding goes I find it much more comfortable on my 2015 Victory Vision.

I'm in the market for a VStrom 650 and so looking at any watchable vid - enjoyed yours. Good to get the perspective of an off road rider (which I will never be now). You make some interesting points.
I've had many road motorcycles, and many much larger. Downsizing a few years back, I tried the VStrom and the NC750X - ended up with the latter but now come back to the VStrom for perhaps the reason(s) you mention about size, weight, sufficient power and all round suitability.
Prompted to comment after the GPS/Speedo bit. Not to claim inaccuracy with GPS - do the really do that? - but to defend their accuracy. GPS is now very precise in a horizontal plane (I gather still some very minor variation due to angles over vertical levels, but fractions of a percent).
It's the motorcycle speedos that are PURPOSELY set to over read.
Manufacturing tolerance of a traditional speedo isn't easy. They could read plus or minus the target value and need careful calibration to be 'spot on', as Police traffic departments used to regularly service their own higher quality secondary units.
Even modern electronic ones will be out (unless based on GPS!), or settings can 'drift'. Changes to tyres and gearing could cause error.
So the solution is to set the target above the actual speed (always over-read). Tolerance error may make them accurate or over-read considerably. Most will be out by a few mph, but always over.
In the UK they must never under-read, by law, and have a manufactured tolerance to a variation between 100% and (110% + 6.25mph) of true speed. At a true 60mph, the speedo could show between 60 and 72.25mph. A rider will always know they are speeding above a limit - ignorance/speedo error is no excuse.
Using 'speedo healers' and other devices may calibrate them, (I'm not sure if they're legal here) but introduce the need to re-calibrate regularly or risk a fine and license penalty.
Guessing from the video next year, you are enjoying the VStrom ...and it looks very capable off road.

I am that stubborn Africa twin guy out of my budget, this video oozed wisdom to me, thank you. New rider, 6 months on a Honda ctx 700 dct and want a more adventure bike for light touring and off road. V-strom 650 seems a great option for learning manual transmission better and not giving up the reliability of my Honda. Thanks again

I have an 05' i live in NZ, i spent a fortune on it trying to get it fixed so beware!
My starter went, then my start button, then my starter solanoid then the clutch then the brakes had to all be redone, new chain and sprockets, then clutch screw adjuster just disintegrated in my hands while i was cleaning behind the cover.
Then there was the cam chain and cam chain tentioners which lead to a bent valve, this was all within 2 months of me purchasing the bike! Fortunately i bought from a dealer and a bunch of the expensive stuff was under warranty.
Because they are getting long in the tooth it takes forever for parts to arrive ( also partly because New Zealand is at the arse end of the world and ya know... covid).
Now i fi ally have it fixed (total cost in NZD of $4500 for the bike and $2500 to fix it) it runs really well.
I've done some 0-100kph times via GPS and it runs pretty steady at 4.1 sec, though the factory claims 3.8sec, i did have a full tank of gas and im 5'11" and 200lb roughly so i think 0.3 of a second can be forgiven lol.
I have the standard seat but full bashplate, crash bars and pannier racks. i take this thing on gravel roads and twin track all the time and it handles really well.
I have a hard top box but soft panniers so if i come off i dont break my legs, the good thing about them is, you don't fell bad dropping them, you dont feel bad abusing them a bit cause they are cheap to buy and lots of after market stuff to fix em ( if you can wait.
I looked at a bunch of mid sized ADV bikes and none comepare old or new to the value for money you ultimately get for the strom.
One that has prick up my ears a bit is the CF Moto 800mt, about 10k USD brand new with a KTM motor and really good features for money, but the strom is awesome for secondhand value.
I've done 10,000km on mine now and haven't got sick of it yet

As an owner of a Versey and a V Strom, I think the Suzuki is the better choice for someone your size. The Versey is a lot of fun on a twisty backroad. It has a playful engine that likes to rev.The V Strom has a longer wheelbase and slower steering, making it better for dirt roads and touring.

Is the Vstrom the best value dollar for dollar “adventure” bike available? That really depends on the individuals definition of adventure. For some riders a well groomed gravel road is considered an adventure and some people think single track is an adventure. One thing that is for certain about the Vstrom (in my opinion) it IS the best dollar for dollar motorcycle available that will serve multiple purposes without complaint giving years and or decades of reliable service at a low ownership cost. Cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, cheap insurance, inexpensive or comparable accessory prices and sips fuel at a very modest rate. The Vstrom is closer to the bike that everyone “needs” but it just isn’t what most want. Nothing about the Vstrom is going to overly excite anyone except for when your $5500 humble Vstrom does all the same things and goes all the same places as the beautiful and much respected $20,000 GSA.

    I miss it! 😢
    I definitely would purchase another.
The biggest PIA with my bike was the buzzing factory crash bars 😖.
    I called them Tuning forks.
Started vibrating at 42-4800 rpm's which is 75-80 mph cruising speed.
If I did it again,, I would definitely remove them.
Very annoying. Other than that,, it was a brilliant experience .
And yes,, I'm looking for another 👍👍.

Same boat. Got the Crf450l. But find I want something more substantial as the street riding and longer “adventure” rides call to me. Want the africa twin but those wee strom prices are so low on the used market. Still haven’t gone for one just because it just feels too typical. Silly reason I know.

    • @DadsDomain
      @DadsDomain  3 года назад

Is it silly....maybe but I get it. The only thing I'd tell you in this market is I knew buying this bike that I can use it for as long as I want to with minimal risk of losing much money other than taxes. Then when I'm ready and have the cash I can sell it and step up. So if you aren't ready for the Africa Twin this is a great pit stop. I rode it on some fire roads this last weekend and I can't believe how well it did. I'll get a video out on that in the coming weeks too.

2nd gen is great for add ons.
    3rd gen more technical.
Where does the "wee" strom name come from?
It comes from the word "PeeWee" as in the smaller one.
    The 1000 is to big.
    Too heavy.
Anything over 650 is not good for trails...
650 sales are 2 times of the 1000...
Might do a video of my 2015 weestrom...
I would trade my seat for yours...
