Maybe in 1940 s we were not in a conflict because we have an army and strategic control for europes trading routes for north south trading. Basicly like in amsterdam is the west east connection for the internet.
One of the main reasons for having an army is to dissuade other countries from fucking with you and if they've done that successfully for 200 years then they're entitled to sing and dance about it.

The Swiss Army trains hard and its soldiers are actually quite skilled and tough. A neutral country knows that they still might be forced to defend themselves against an aggressor and that their military is sometimes needed in the event of a natural disaster or other national emergency.
