Why Don’t Tamil People Have Last Names?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A name is a powerful thing. Having the right name can open all the right doors. Having the wrong one can be hazardous to your health.
► Nowhere is the power of a name greater than in India - a nation home to hundreds of ethnicities and adherents of all the world’s major religions. A place where caste divisions still permeate society.
Know an Indian’s name and you instantly know their religion, ethnicity, and caste (a proxy for socio-economic status).
► A Kaur is usually a female of the Sikh religion and Punjabi ethnicity; a Todiyattu would be a Muslim hailing from the southern state of Kerala, and a Chatterjee would be a Hindu of the priestly Brahmin caste from the northeastern state of Bengal.
► Having the wrong name can deny you job opportunities or marriage partners, see you be violently attacked, denied services (like entry into temples, adequate help from police), and face an endless litany of discrimination in everyday interactions. Much of this is not legal of course - but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen - even in the 21st century.
► Amongst the Tamil community, however (now about 75 million strong) - there was a mass social reformist movement to try and break this cycle.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
► The communist revolution in the Soviet Union, as well as the rising tide of socialist movements across the globe, showed that it was possible to de-stratify societies.
► Many Tamil leaders like Periyar decided the moral thing to do was re-make society such that people from backward castes have economic and social equality to those in forward ones.
► This was to be realized through The Self-Respect Movement.
► As a result of this movement - intercaste marriages were no longer deemed taboo, but in fact, encouraged. The Brahmin caste’s monopoly on performing marriage ceremonies (which saw them also be paid for these services) was also broken with non-Brahmin celebrants recognized.
► Perhaps most revolutionary of all - it saw people drop their caste names as surnames. Instead, people took their father’s first name as their surname.
► This movement gained traction not just with Tamilians in India but also those across Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and beyond.

Great job

Can you please explain
Why tamils don't keep surname ??
I didn't understood your bottom comment..
Absolutely interesting.
To be appreciated man!!
Tamilians stopped using surname after "self respect movement" led by Periyar in 20th century to achieve caste and gender equality.
To abolish centuries old caste dominance system of India.
It's the same reason all sikhs have singh/kaur as a surname, so everyone is equal.
Lot of people from south don't use surname, but majority are from Tamil Nadu
.They use father's name as last name
Example C. V. Raman
Raman is person's name C. & V. are initials of father's and grandfather's name.
Sikhs singh use krne ke baad surname use krte hai for eg Deep Singh Brar
Nice step.... Every one is equal...
Means they used their father names
Ex- apj abdul kalam
Where abdul is his name
Kalam is his surname
And apj is his father and grandfather names

Some stupid people in the comment are relating this surnames to the caste system,,Everyone in the world has a surname,,It's just normal,no need to relate it,,It's just common surnames used in different states.
This video has nothing to do with castism that's true. But surnames in general is the only source of castism. If nobody has a surname then they won't be identified as dalit, bhrahmin, kshatriya etc.
I agree surnames exist all-over the world, but in hindu community surname is the symbol of caste, its indicate your caste.

People in comments screaming that caste system is evil and probably don't know a single thing about it. In earlier days when there weren't any modern form of livelihood the occupation was heriditery a cobblers son had experience of repairing shoes from childhood so he became a cobbler, same with others. As we know no job/occupation is greater or smaller. Bata(A cobbler) , Tata(A lohar) . Untouchability is a form of celebrity status because the upper caste were rich and powerful and thus didn't mix with common folks for security reasons and as we known it is pretty much heriditery ( a actors son is popular without doing anything). Thus caste system isn't evil. But we as people have corrupted it.
Yeah true
Society is so non-accepting towards himachali people that so many people hide their real surnames to just not be excluded
Exactly. This all breeds from jealousy. Lower class don't want to see upper class enjoying luxuries they also want it at any cost(with less marks and reservation)
Doesn't matter whatever may be its history. We don't need the caste system in this modern world. It would be better if it gets abolished.

Kumar and singh are both used as middle name and last name in UP.
For eg - varun singh verma, varun kumar verma, varun kumar singh. Such names are commonly found in UP. So many suryavanshi vermas(general) use singh and verma as both middle and last name.
Other suryavanshis in UP have different surnames but they too sometimes use singh as middle name and then a last name.
Also, this is kinda biased as many girls in UP also use "kumari" as a middle name or last name, especially in kshatriya class.
"Rajkumari" is only used by titular princesses in UP (i think they use it for rajasthani royal women too), though it can be used as a name too.

@@jugalkishorgogoi5865 In lower Assam they actually have Das. I'm from upper Assam too but here in lower assam every 2nd person is a Das. Most of rajbongshis, and many kalitas, and kaibartas are Das. So it's highly likely that it's the most used assamese surname.

Sharma is one of many names of Vishnu. It means bliss.
As many would say Tamil Nadu stopped using caste names as surname just to stop discrimination and fights between different caste ….I believe it’s the first step….yes still people see caste in Tamilnadu as any other state does..but atleast this state is ahead of other state and trying to change the fact caste is nothing but the divide and rule policy of the colonial power….so rather than downgrading the fact try implementing measures to avoid caste based discrimination (to my fellow Tamilians - is it that hard to accept the fact first and then addressing the issue)

I am Choudhary from Assam ...It's rare in Assam but ranked 21st among most common in whole India ...
This surname has no castes & religion ....The surname was invented by Britishers & given to the wealthy zamindars in the 18th century ...My grandfather's great grandfather father got the first Choudhary surname before whom we were Bhuyan's from Assamese Kayastha Community
Dingo you have not answered for the question "why most people have surnames as 'Kumar'"
Waiting for the answer😅
It's not a surname it's just a tittle who don't want to be part of casteism use Kumar and Kumari only but some put surname after Kumar like Kumar Singh, Pandey.......
@@pandeyjeet1512 Thanks for the information. 😊
Kumar is a casteless surname ,As most people in our country are deprived of necessary facilities due to Caste discrimination and many other things ,People started to adopt surnames from which people can not identify caste. Kumar is one of them.
@@Dingosxp actually in back there was one more tradition in Magadh everybody was called used to call as kumar in his pupil days during his learning phase after marriage they don't use that surname and same for women they use kumari before marriage and after marriage they use devi.
And Kumar/Kunwar are also interelated. Bihari ppl love kumar as there surname or middle name 😁

This means that west bengal, Bihar together will give a massive population and resulting in max nos of surname.
Also this is evident as earlier surnames we're based on caste system and caste discrimination in earlier days were mostly found in eastern part of india

Tamilans stopped using surname after Periyar self respect movement to achieve casteless society.
but still my grandfather's name ends with the caste name Govinda Padayatchi.
Padayatchi( who ruled and participated in the army) refers to the Vannia(agni) Kula kshatriya.
After that my father and mine are not using any surnames because TN govt also passed GO , if caste surname is used that they are not eligible for govt schemes and jobs.
As expected my surname wasn't even in the list.
I don’t expect them to put Sk1ter in the list 😂

1.First of all no one uses Kumar in Haryana and Punjab
2. People just use Choudhary, Singh and Kumar and they aren't surnames
3. Maliks and pawar are also found in haryana
4. Rana, Chauhan ,Rathod are also found in rajasthan
5.Barman and Verma are completely different surnames from different communities
