    Nice one Sam. I was lucky enough to see MR 1000 when she was still running specials in the 70's, she had a very distinctive sound.
    In service those compounds were remarkable performers, in the 1920's, before the Royal Scots, they were the main LMS express loco, and on the West Coast mainline were in direct competition with the A1/A3s on the ECML. And despite facing a slightly longer and hillier route put in London to Scotland runs that matched the LNER for timings. They often worked double headed, a legacy of the Midlands infamous small engine policy that hamstrung the LMS in its early years. Their finest hour was on April 27, 1928, three days before the LNER started non-stop runs to Edinburgh when no 1054 at the head of the Royal Scot (the train, not the loco) covered the 399.7 miles to Edinburgh, non-stop, and with out a crew change. (another so called first for the A3's that is unjustly claimed)
    Anyway smashing model, shame about that wobbly tender, I wonder if thats a one off fault or are they all like that,
    Have a great week
    Jon

    I always loved the compounds. At 76 I still have a Trix Twin Railways compound that was my 12th birthday present! It still works but is very much a toy train with very small driving wheels and not much detail. It doesn't hold a candle to the Hornby 2P 4-4-0 which I also have though that is from a completely different era of railway modelling.
    I remember travelling from Leicester to St. Pancras behind a compound in about 1960 when a black 5 failed and that was a real highlight of my younger years. The sound of a compound in full flight down Sharnbrook Bank is something I will never forget! At only 2 beats to a revolution of the driving wheels they had a syncopated beat unlike any other loco. They also sounded good pulling away as a 3 cylinder simple. For anyone wanting to know how they sounded there used to be a Transacord 45rpm extended play record which is probably on the Internet by now as a soundtrack.
    I'm glad to see Hornby have built the compound as they were a distinctive LMS loco of my childhood and bring back some happy memories!

    Absolutely love the clean look of this locomotive. I am from the U.S. , I love all steam locomotives , but I have to say British engines are elegant and robust. Pure ,blunt and true. Great review Sam.

    So this is interesting - I noticed your poll about the music. I notice recently you have been including a 'pre-amble' with a bit of the trains running beforehand. I think actually opening on the box is more effective structurally, because the unboxing and subsequent running session at the end is more enticing, and a 'reward' for viewing the initial build-up. The introduction graphic you have of the carriages, for me, does the same job as the pre-amble. Also, all your viewers probably enjoy the sound of carriages click-clacking, but not all of them will enjoy the same type of music, so it's harder to gauge (no pun intended), whether this will be cloying or bring the viewer in. Just something to mull over. Some lovely crisp shots as always.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Luke, thanks very much for the feedback - I will definitely take that into consideration!
      That being said - only a tiny percentage of viewers actually reach the 'reward' running session, so the initial taster was to entice people to stay for the rest! I've been making an effort to improve audience retention lately, so to start with the more interesting portion seemed like a good way to do that - and I have seen improvements so far!
      You are right about hearing the click-clacking though, I may scrap the music for the main running session!
      All the best,
      Sam :)

      Hi Ian, yeah it's quite odd - I think they've only done the black more recently! Glad to hear you got one - the Red version is definitely the better one for detail, glad you were happy with it,

    Hope i'm not too late :D. Trainspotting time: I saw your Hornby Railroad Lner flying Scotsman, your Hornby Railroad lms black 5, your Hornby Railroad southern schools class, your Hornby Railroad tts Crosti boiler 9f, your Hornby ex lms Brunswick green patriot ( i know why ;D ) and your Bachmann Ex lms Brunswick green Jubilee class.
    The odd one out was the Jubilee class, because 1). it was Bachmann and 2). it wasn't a Railroad model. The big clue might have been the weathering.
    Great vid Sam still loving the vids Keep it up :)

    I wonder if it's only me thinking this, but I feel that the tender is rather tall for the locomotive? On the white background it really did look quite large compared to the engine itself. Top notch review again mate!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад +1

      Hi mate, yeah you're right I think - I found that it doesn't really match! I think the original Hornby tender for the compound wasn't as tall, and looked better!
      Glad you enjoyed the review,

    #1000 was built at Derby Works on November 30th, 1902 for the Midland Railway. It became LMS #1000 in 1923. Before the Jubilees, Royal Scots, and Patriots came, the LMS used these engines as their main express passenger engines. #1000 later became British Railways #41000 in 1948 and it was withdrawn from service on Halloween, 1951 (completing nearly 50 years of service). Instead of being scrapped, #1000 was chosen for preservation. It was restored in 1959 to it's 1914 appearance and was based at Barrow Hill Shed. It's now on display at the National Railway Museum in York.

    If you ask me 45 quid fora real nice model especially by Hornby I think that's a good deal. I know the pound to dollar ratio isn't like it was a decade ago when I was at RAF Mildenhall but point is that isn't a bad price. It's charming, has character, well made and price was set real great. Over well done Sam, cheers from Missouri.

    Nice review Sam, yes that tender is a puzzle, Railroad models are "supposed" to be good runners. The dimensions of the tender also bother me, especially the wheelbase of the axles, they look too close together. Your Crab loco has the Fowler tender aswell, I wouldn't question the dimensions of that one, it looks "right" from the "off". : )
    Cheers, Cliff.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

      Thanks a lot Cliff, yeah it's a very odd one - and I agree that the wheelbase is very odd - but the moulded axle boxes seem to match the position of the axles, so perhaps it's a fundamental flaw?
      All the best,
      Sam :)

    • @janiceandcliff
      @janiceandcliff 7 лет назад

      I wonder if they have "really fluffed" the tender on this one, plenty of rivets, but questionable dimensions plus that low centre axle. Perhaps it's one of those "Friday afternoon" jobs. :/
      Yours, Cliff.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

      haha yeah I think that's what definitely happened - it's strange that they would swap the tender in the first place - since that wasn't the tender they used to use for this loco - who knows?

    Hi Sam, it's a nice looking loco, the Railroad range offers the same or better level of quality that we had in the 80s on the best there was so I am always happy with it. However that rocking tender is a very poor show, not heard if it before. Wonder if Hornby would swap the tender over for you?

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Mike, thanks a lot for the comment! I love the railroad range too - absolutely nothing wrong with it in my view! Yeah the tender is definitely very dodgy - I need to check whether the one on my patriot is the same. I don't know whether it's too late in the day to contact Hornby about it, since I bought this at Christmas! Either way, they didn't help me before, so I wouldn't have high hopes anyhow.

      You can't really with DC, unless you use multiple tracks like mine, or use blocking sections - that can be quite complex though!

    for a hornby 0-4-0 in New Zealand is 40 pound and the railroad evening star is 100 pound

    • @SamsTrains

      Hmm, I'd say that's about right - they sell the Evening Star over here for about £100 too, though they are cheaper if you shop around!

      Hehe...yes, you seem to like them well enough. I was a bit put off by the tender wheels on the black one, but it seems to go well enough on your layout...

  • @sudrianliam1199
    @sudrianliam1199 7 лет назад

    Ye see, in my opinion, the tender looks a bit chunky and oversized for a Fowler tender on a Compound. I also think that they didn't get the wheelbase quite right, it's a bit short actually...

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

      Yeah I agree with you there - I can't put my finger on it, but it just doesn't look right! That's true though - the wheelbase is pretty damn odd!
      All the best,
      Sam :)

  • @itloon
    @itloon 7 лет назад

    A quandary - mark down for detail mis-match. Surprisingly controllable - tender might have problems on slopes. Overall, my opinion is you did well. Replacing tyres on a pair of my tenders that slip on steep slopes under load, so might try and duplicate your adaptations. Your intro and soundtrack - cheerful and I enjoy it - very high rating from me! Alan.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

      Hi Alan, thanks a lot for the comment mate - though actually this one is loco drive, not tender driven - so luckily traction isn't a problem with this!

    Maybe its just me but i think u'd really should add some basic technical detail to the engine's history like: max speed, indicated power, and weight/axle load (since wiki only has tractive effort under performance figures, so i have no ide what the real engines could do).

    I spotted Flying Scotsman, Royal Scott, Black 5, Jubilee, Crosti 9F and what looked like the Schools Class Engine hiding behind the pub. I like the two red no. 1000 Compound engines more than the black one. I know you have the Prussian Blue liveried Jinty in your collection. I've bought a new model engine in the same livery. It is the 4-4-0 2P Tender Engine, and the last one in the cabinet of Llangollen Station Shop status. I bought her for £75.99, but will not test her till I move home. Do you have a Prussian Blue 2P Tender Engine yourself? Mine is no. 44. If you happen to find one among your throng of engines, I'd like to see a review of it very much and a running session of course. I'd give your black Compound Engine 8 out of 10, to give it some credit.

      Absolutely - it's great value! Yeah a little more weight would definitely help - but because of the way it pivots on the centre axel, you'd only get 4 wheels on the track at one time - which is better than just 2, but still not great!
