    This is a great overview, Bec. I'll definitely be sharing it with the staff at my school, so thank you very much! It was great to see someone else using a notebook for running records - it's my preferred way of doing RRs on 'the run' in the classroom.

      Ah another kindred spirit! Hehe it's just so much easier isn't it?! I hope your staff find it helpful ❤️

      It is! It just helps with the ongoing paper battle that my classroom ends up becoming some days, too!

    This is REALLY helpful I have an after school development program for middle school students and I will be incorporating it as a tutoring program with my students for 45mins per day to see what level everyone is on. My daughter is in middle school 8th grade so I can test it on her. I did it before when she was in elementary school and other elementary kids but never middle school students. Will shorts stories help with determining when to move the student up a level?

      I think you can use any text for running records provided you know exactly what is in the text and what learning goals you are focusing on 😀 Im so glad you found the video useful. Thanks for watching ❤

      When you do a running record you do it on the date you observe the student reading to you 😃

    Thanks for your very useful video. I am a pre-service teacher with an exam on this tomorrow! With the M-S-V part, do I circle the M-S-V when they do get meaning and syntax accurate? Or when they get it wrong?

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  6 лет назад

      I circle when thats the reason for the error. That way I know to make it a focus 😁
      Thanks for watching ❤️

    • @ElinaMaree
      @ElinaMaree 6 лет назад

      Okay great - thank you. Some videos I watched (possibly American ones), they did it the other way around i.e circled MSV when they got meaning correct. Or when they got syntax correct...

      Hi again. Now I am doing a unit on Teachers as Leaders & Entrepreneurial Thinkers. We have to decide on a "problem" (that relates to teaching) and propose a solution. We were thinking of proposing an app that replaces running records. One that measures phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. We don't have to actually design it - just make a proposal/learning contract/reflection on process. Do you see any "problems" with running records and/or their usage in Australian classrooms? Do they tell teachers everything they need to know? And give the classroom teacher all the informtion they need to judge the reading of a student? what do you think of our idea about an alternative? I know I am only a pre-service teacher - so not your main audience - but I'd be grateful if you can take the time to reply.

    can u do it with preschooler?

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  6 лет назад +2

      You can do it with any book, any age. I would wonder why you would want to at that age though. Personally I think reading for enjoyment should be the focus at that age 😀

    Love the video. Just one question. How do I do running record observations when I am only able to use one child due to not having worked in a daycare yet?

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  5 лет назад

      I'm not sure I totally understand your question. Day care is too young to be worrying about running records or levelled reading. If you mean you're only working with one child that's fine as you do running records one child at a time anyway 🙂

      @@talkinchalk I am taking a class that is asking us to do 4 running record observations, 4 anecdotal observations and 3 event sampling observations. As I haven't worked in Early Childhood Education as of yet I haven't fully learned how to do running records or event sampling observations. I am better at anecdotal observations but still don't know how to do them fully.

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  5 лет назад

      When you say early education what age levels are you talking about. In my system early childhood means ages 0-5 years old. We would never do running records in that age group.

    • @talkinchalk

      Ahhh ok. Well that would make sense then for the kids 5yrs and older. Yes I would still do the running records with students 1 on 1 using a familiar reader (a book they have already read during the guided reading session) 🙂
