    Hi Talkin' Chalk. I am your newest subscriber and I just love what you are doing in your class!! Could you tell me how long you spend on Guided Reading each day? I noticed there are quite a few 'Must Do' activities each day and wondered how long the students have to complete them? Also, will you ever be doing a 'typical day' type video? I am super curious to see what you do at other times of the school day. Thanks for sharing your great ideas :)

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  6 лет назад

      +Femke Castles hi there! Thanks so much for subscribing and supporting the channel ❤️ guidd reading is about an hour or so depending on the day. This gives me about 20mins for each group (not all groups read every day though). Students can take as long as they need to complete activities as long as they get through the 'must do's'. I will see how I go to fit in a 'typical day' video to give you a good idea. Thanks for watching! 🤓

      Thanks Talkin' Chalk. I will have a P/1/2 class next year so I see this kind of set up as being super beneficial for both me and the students. Have a great day :)

    Hey Bec, i was wondering what sort of must dos and can dos would you recommend for older kids like grade 5/6? I like the idea is practicing these skills and all self choice and self monitoring, so how would you go setting up activities that would challenge them and not be 'baby-ish' that is self directed learning?

    I've watched part one and two and plan on watching the others as I definitely want to implement this in my classroom but I'm wondering how many must do's are in each session?

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  6 лет назад

      +Marni Telford thanks so much for watching! I think when you get to the 3rd video I show a written plan with the must do/can do activities for a week. But on average its about 3-4 can do and 3-4 must do activities and they switch each day. ❤️

    I'm interested in your letter/tile activity. The one with different shaped, transparent tiles to put over the given page, that then links letters together to make words. Do you happen to have a link for where you purchased that?

      Talkin' Chalk I had a look online for the pathwords game. It's tricky to find and a little expensive for a classroom game, but it also said it's only 1 player. Have you found a way to use it as a group activity, or do you use it 1 student at a time? I really like the look of the game!

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  6 лет назад +1

      Tamara Hayes I use it in smal groups and the kids just work together to complete it. Because the activities are free roaming sometimes a student might work on their own but I find they like working with someone. Team work is awesome! Perhaps your school could purchase one as a school resource so your not covering it. I honestly have no idea how much it cost as it is in my schools resources.

    Hi there! Thanks for your informative videos! Just wondering what happens if the children don’t get through the MUST DO’s? Or is there an incentive for them to get through them? Thinking about trying it in my class.

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  5 лет назад

      Hi Mary. Thanks so much watching 🙂 usually the incentive to get through the must do's is being able to work on the can do's. The can do's will usually have the more hands-on activities or games. If I find kids aren't completing them I reflect to see if I'm setting them too much work or work that isn't independent. If I feel it is due to behaviour then I will use my regular behaviour management systems to find ways to reward on task behaviours 👍

      Great thanks. Also how does the timing work? Would you sit with your group for about 15/20 minutes?

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  5 лет назад

      Mary Kendog yes approx 15-20 mins per group depending on which group it is. The lower groups might need more time than the higher groups.

    Hi Bec, Love your work. Sorry if you've been asked this before. I was wondering how you differentiate Must Dos and Can Dos across a range of abilities and age levels. So, they need to complete their must dos before they can do their can dos, but I have a Yr 1/2 class and some of the Yr 1s take ages to get their work done while some of the Yr 2s are fast finishers and there are several levels in between.

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Danielle! It's tricky as there's such different learning curves between year 1 and year 2. I try and use open-ended tasks so there's not really a "complete" point. Just that they have to contribute before moving on. Such as a word web activity where they put as much as they can. I would suggest in your case though some kids might need different tasks between year 1 and year 2. Another strategy is make sure the 'can do' tasks are hands-on and fun so the kids are really excited and want to finish their 'must do' activities faster. I hope this is helpful ❤

    Awesome video! Thanks for the great ideas. I followed your link from the Relief Teaching FB page and read that you have year 2s. Do you incorporate activities from other KLA's or are they just literacy based?

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  7 лет назад

      Alison K Thanks so much! 😁 Its very literacy-based but I try and incorporate where its suitable ❤️

    • @someonerightnow

      So interesting! We run the program at my school and they must incorporate the other KLAs in Stage 1, I love seeing how others approach it. Will be stealing the recipe idea!

    Thank you for the video! I have a similar set up in my Prep room where we rotate around 3 stations however, one station has a choice of 3 activities that they can choose from and they don't have to do all of them. They can pick which one they want. Two stations are 'must do' with a TA and myself. I wondered if your students rotate around or they just choose to go from one another when they are done?

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  6 лет назад

      Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it 😀 Depending on the class as to whether I let them free roam or rotate. with this particular class I let them just choose. Except for the computers, those were timed and allocated slots. Thanks so much for watching ❤️

      Thanks Bec! I am desperately trying to find a good way to run Guided Reading. We have help from our wonderful Learning Support for 45 mins x 3 sessions a week. Wondering if I could make it work to have the must do/can do as an ongoing thing across the 3 sessions rather than have things they must do or can do per session

    • @talkinchalk
      @talkinchalk  4 года назад +1

      Yes that’s exactly what I do. For example the word work activities in their workbook. Even though it’s listed as a must do, that doesn’t mean “must complete”. As long as they work on it and are making a proper effort, then that’s fine. They can do more the next day regardless of whether it’s a must do or a can do 😀

      Ok! I am going to see how I go! For term 1 and 2 this year I wasn’t happy with how we did it. I felt bored so can only imagine how kids felt. We started SMART spelling in Term 3 and myself and a support teacher taught this during our sessions whilst kids ran their own reading groups with reciprocal reading. Worked well as all kids were at very high levels for Year 2 but we can’t go straight into this with the new kids coming.
