    In vitro is mainly done on pmma plates. I think it's good that people realize that the Boots Star is the UVA/UVB absorption ratio, and not the UVAPF/SPF like some people seem to assume. That the 2 boots stars were abolished since they didn't meet the 0.3 eu ratio, while 2 stars means 0.4-0.6 shows these ratios are not interchangeable.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  4 года назад +2

      I wish they would have sticked to the Boots Star Rating throughout Europe, as far as I know it was the first to be introduced. One system in place would make things less complicated.

    • @peterkloostermann
      @peterkloostermann 4 года назад +1

      @@DoctorAnne the system can also be confusing to consumers in my opinion. An SPF50+ 5 star sunscreen doesn't necessarily give better protection compared to a SPF50+ 4 star sunscreen, it depends on the actual SPF.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  4 года назад +1

      @@peterkloostermann I agree, it can be confusing, but having several different systems in place is only adding to that confusion. And, not talking about you as someone very knowledgeable in skin, barely anyone pays attention to the ratings anyway. I hope that would change if people only needed to look out for one additional thing...

    You read my mind because I was just thinking about SPF today! I wear a moisturizer with SPF during the day and I’ll add an extra facial SPF on top if I’m going to be out in the sun for majority of my day. I also like to wear foundations with spf during the day. As a US customer, it is SO frustrating to find out that our SPF ratings don't carry the significance of the European and Asian systems. It's also frustrating that our government regulations do not allow manufacturers to use the best filters available, but hopefully one day they will. It is difficult to track down the European and Asian sunscreens themselves or to purchase their products in the US (like La Roche Posay) without risking getting counterfeit or altered ingredients. I've had to re-evaluate my sunscreens for both daily and extended use, but haven't found the exact US products to purchase.

    • @olinayoung6287

      @DoctorAnne  4 года назад

      I get that, but surely the filters will get allowed for usage eventually. But I know what you mean, I have a hard time finding credible and reliable sources for Korean sunscreens here in Germany as well.
      Does YesStyle shop to the US? I have had them recommended on here quite a bit in the comments.

      I would suggest you head over to LabMuffin Beauty, she did a video answering this exact question. In short: It depends on the size of the window and how close you are as well as on the question if you have problems with hyperpigmentation for example.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  3 года назад +1

      Any protection is better than no protection, and indoors you should be fine if you are in reasonable distance to windows and such. UVA will penetrate the glass, so where you are indoors play an important role, as will your individual skin. But as a rule of thumb: If you will apply that pa +++ liberally every day you are indoors, it is much better than the pa++++ you hate and won‘t wear enough of.

      You are welcome.
      Sunscreen with broad spectrum protection will in the long term help with that, but the process is a long and time consuming one.
      I will do a series on hyperpigmentation in the next months though, as it is a complicated and much requested topic.
      But in short: Sunscreen before everything else, then a retinol and or AHA and then other ingredients like Arbutin, Tranexamic Acid, Kojic Acid, Vitamin C. Or Hydroquinone, but only under professional guidance.

  • @takethree5276
    @takethree5276 2 года назад +1

    Would there be a measurement for how long the UVA protection will last depending the level of PA? For example, we can calculate SPF and work out how long it will protect your skin from UVB and how much SPF you need to apply.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  2 года назад +2

      I am not sure I understand the question correctly: The SPF needs to be reapplied every two hours as it loses protection due to rubbing off etc. Same is true for UVAA protection, as both act through film forming.

    • @takethree5276
      @takethree5276 2 года назад

      @@DoctorAnne That makes sense! To simplify my question, I'm wondering if there's a way to measure how much sunscreen we need to use and know how long it will be effective for protecting from UVA. For SPF, we know that SPF1 lasts 15 minutes each to protect from UVB, however, there is no known such measurements for PA/PPD.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  2 года назад +2

      @@takethree5276 Again, I don't completely agree with the SPF 1 lasts 15 minutes each - that is an estimation that varies depending on time of the day, altitude, where in the world you are, if you are standing on a reflective surface or in the shade... I think it is a good estimation to assume that the UVA protection lasts as long as the UVB protection, which is again dependent on the amount you apply more than on the actual SPF number.

    (Edit included at beginning: I read zinc oxide needs to be 15-20% for complete protection so I'll double check % but the sunscreen in question does say SPF 50 which doesn't sound right). As always love your no nonsense science based videos (plus you’re lovely 😊!). I’ve watched all your sunscreen/UV videos and I may have missed this piece (sorry if I did). I recently switched sunscreens but had been loving a physical one (Australian gold botanical face broad spectrum spf 50). They said it is PPD 19.2, PA ++++ when asked (this isn't on packaging). But Zinc is 4% I saw, so was wondering about it’s UVA protection. Is 4% zinc oxide qualify as PPD 19.2 and/or PA ++++?

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  4 года назад +2

      It combines Zinc and Titanium Dioxide, so the SPF 50 comes from both ingredients combined - I would believe that. As for the PPD 19,2, it does sound high with Zinc Oxide only being at 4%, I agree with you there. Sadly I can not give you the exact detail whether or not this formula lives up to that claim. Have you tried one of the UVA protection calculators that are online? They are not exact, but will point you in the right direction.

  • @moose8762
    @moose8762 4 года назад

    Ah, I never knew what the UVA in the circle meant. I only use sunscreen with SPF 50+ and PA++++ because I probably apply between 1/2 and 2/3 of the recommended amount for the advertised protection. I kind of assume that the second application will cover the rest. Absolutely no white cast and no shine is important to me as well because most of the year it is cloudy and dark and I would look insane. I was driving to the library once using a new sunscreen and when I got there I looked in the mirror and my face was covered in flaky bits and I have to rub them off with my jumper sleeve. That was the Bioderma Aquafluid. Bioderma Photoderm AR also pills if you use more than a thin layer but I actually like that one quite a bit - not worth €19 though. I should start taking a little pot into department stores and filling it with enough sunscreen for a day from testers.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  4 года назад +2

      Applying enough really is a struggle. I measured it out again for an upcoming video and wow, it is a ton of product! So yes, the maximum protection, so I get a reasonable protection value with what I apply is a sensible approach.

    • @moose8762
      @moose8762 4 года назад

      @@DoctorAnne Exactly, a lot of aestheticians will say that you need a minimum of SPF 30 but really you need to use at least SPF 50 to get SPF 30 in real, practical use. Most chemical sunscreen will have much higher than SPF 50 if they are advertised 50+ though. Purito, for example, has an average SPF of 84.5 in the tests, using only two organic filters. I think if people will only use SPF 30+ sunscreens because SPF 50+ ones can be unpleasant then that is better than nothing but I don't really think SPF 30+ is good enough. And so many mineral only sunscreens are SPF 30 because SPF 50 mineral only sunscreens are like white paint (unless they are tinted and the tinted ones still leave a film on the skin).

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  4 года назад +2

      @@moose8762 Completely agree - if we all would apply the correct amount and reapplied without missing a spot, 30 would probably be fine, but right now... I take all the protection I get.
