Yoo, I was the guy in the video who caught his first musky! It's so awesome to have been able to be a part of the video; I've been watching your vids for close to 10 years and always thought how cool it'd be to meet ya!
As a Minnesotan I cannot believe the disrespect of these fish. Up here we cherish catching these fish and it doesn’t happen often. I can’t even imagine killing them but they are not invasive to Minnesota so it makes sense why I believe that.
Absolutely. As a Mainer myself, too many people up here want to kill these beautiful fish along with pike. I understand why people don’t like them since they are considered invasive but these fish are here to stay here and I would love the chance to catch the fish of 10,000 casts
@@liamgade8399 maybe. OTOH, what can you do? as Jon rightfully said, there is no way of getting rid of the invasive muskies, which are now (now that they've been living there for decades) not too far from being considered just another native species, other than poisoning the water to kill everything and then reintroducing what is considered appropriate. and even then it won't be long before they come back.
Jon, idk if you’ll read this, I feel like you’re the kinda guy that reads all your comments. Anyways, I love your Muskie, pike, and walleye vids more than any other video. 10/10 brother keep on fishing 🫡
Jon when you spoke up on the fishes behalf we could tell you truly care and got emotional. Thank you for pushing not only the love of the sport but the ethical continuation of the sport and respect for any fish.
As a carp fishing enthusiast, i share the same sentiment of compassion for muskie about common and mirror carp. They fight super hard, are incredibly intelligent, grow to sizes of 50+ lbs, have equalized in numbers in (most) fisheries with the gamefish and aren't doing massive amounts of damage. Unfortunately people leave them on the bank all over and that is just so incredibly wasteful, makes our fisheries smell awful and isn't impacting the overall numbers in a significant way. We need get over our destructive nature to allow the animals we placed in the waterbodies to thrive. It's not their fault, enjoy the big fish and let them live!!
Maine has a very rare and diverse coldwater sport fishery compared to the rest of the usa; these musky are hearty, breed like crazy, and love devouring our native populations; taking them out to preserve our natives is okay imo ( i'm in midcoast region and pike have overtaken a few locations here as well)
Countless dams, high mercury levels in the Pennobscott, anglers slashing big square tails brookie breeders (moosehead) for a fillet, illegal introduction of baitfish (smelt) in heritage waters, stocking scrubbers in lakes where attempt to natives thrive in... the list goes on. In sum I don't disagree with your sentiment, I wish Maine was as pure as it was before the logging and overfishing days but let us address the real problems at hand rather than blame a single species that miraculously made their way across international borders.
You couldn't be more wrong about muskies "breeding like crazy," very low success rate with breeding, and also their main diet is suckers, they're not taking out your precious trout. Christ.
@@JonBrollinThe rivers and other bodies of water are cleaner than ever, there wasn't a black fly and can't see em problem in the past because they couldn't breed in the polluted waters. Heya. Muskie our native fish. With your bait you aiming for the biggest only. Try half the bait size and good vibing or wobble. Nature color on clear water, bright color on unclear water. Then try find if they on the sides, shallow or deep water what is temp related. More cold more deep.

I live in Cleveland OH and fish Lake Erie on a regular basis. And I hear the same thing about the Mighty Sheepshead🐟 people catch them and kill them on the spot, not understanding the vital role they play in the ecosystem. That they are native to the lake they help destroy evasive species like zebra mussels, eat gobies and also help to maintain a healthy walleye population which makes us the (Walleye) capital of the world, sorry for my rant. 🎣 On!
You guys need a throwback rod rigged with a red october or similar tube. After that long 8 where it swiped at your bait.Once you take that bait out immeadiatley toss that tube and work aggresivly sometimes even vertical jig it. Even better have Grant grab tube rod and hit it coming off your 8. The different bait right in its face will anger them into eating!! Get that Maine Record guys.
I ran into you on Pecan Creek, Lake Lewisville about 6 years ago. Now that I've moved from Texas to St. John Valley, maybe I will run into you here as well. Great video.
As a Mainer myself, it breaks my heart to see these amazing fish treated so poorly even though they are considered invasive. I would love one day to catch the fish of 10,000 casts in my home state
There's a local spot here that produces some giant bowfin. My buddy and I like to catch them because they're huge, great fighters, and this time of year have awesome blue coloration. The locals will catch these giant fish and just throw them in the ditch to die. We even saw a kid and his dad killing them with a hatchet. Had to have a talk with them about not being assholes. It's even worse because the bowfin is a native fish here, but the locals will kill them because they think they eat all of the catfish.
Also a fun fact the Saint John river is full of PFAS so doesn’t really matter the fish are non edible so i don’t see why people don’t just throw them back!
Not sure what river you fished, I saw the Acadian trash can by the boat launch which made me think St. Johns. If it wasn't you surely should try there. Going to Fort Kent for the musky derby every summer, and we would see giants that took two men to hold.
Anthropomorphic influence, unfortunately, is an alteration to many ecosystems around the world and those ecosystems often times don’t have the ability to adapt fast enough. I live on an island in Washington state and we found a 20lb snapping turtle on our golf course. That’s a 15-20 year old animal and we tried to get to a sanctuary. Our F&G program said they’d try to save it. They never contacted the sanctuary and just euthanized it. Yeah, does it suck? Sure. But we have to take those measures to save native wildlife. Should we compare Muskie to Feral cats? I’m a cat person at heart but I fully believe in the removal or neutering of outdoor cats. They have no place in our wild ecosystems and kill indiscriminately. Our state also has a kill order on Northern Pike for the San Juan Islands and Lake Washington because people introduce fish without thought. That said, I agree with Jon. The only way to remove those Muskie would be to chemically treat the entire river system and even if they did, the Muskie could be reintroduced via eggs from migratory birds. Maine is likely screwed on the Muskie issue.
Just out of curiosity, when was this video filmed? I’m contemplating going out with a local musky guide but I’m not sure if it’s too late in the season.
I’m sure catching them is fun but an invasive species is an invasive species. Same goes with the Northern pike. The preservation of Maines cold water species and ecosystems need to be prioritized, especially in areas where the endangered Atlantic salmon inhabit. That being said, great vid and they are a pretty fish for sure.
Then petition for the removal of all the useless dams on pennobscott, salmon literally cannot effectively make their way up the St. Johns any more because of dams.
@@JonBrollinI agree but you need to be restrictive with the removal of Penobscot dams they should keep at least one to make sure pike don’t move up the river into mattagamon, Penobscot lake, mattawamkeag river, etc
Agreed 👍 I work on fish passage and Atlantic salmon recovery in the state. Dam removal is so important as you mentioned, the public needs to stand up against these big greedy power companies, many of the facilities are old and inefficient
You'd think the state record would be closer to 55 - 58. Other than being a river, which should not affect length anyhow, it's about perfect for musky. Heck, there could be a real giant in there. I'd sure like the chance to prove it. As a guy from Wis, that's sick not appreciating musky.
Tasty eating! To many complain about bones and they are so easy to remove... or just pick out while eating. Wasting a vert tasty fish by tossing it on shore is criminal. If you want to remove it eat it, or donate it to someone who will eat it!
