The original Telstar deserves an episode to itself, recorded as it was in Joe Meek's flat over a leather goods shop in London's Holloway Rd. His whole life was an incredibly bizarre one culminating in a tragic ending
Well, you nailed it, Mazzy. A very enjoyable video. I haven't seen any of these shown before and some really choice cuts, too. The Loney and Ginsberg were top drawer. Thanks for jumping on board.
I fondly remember Stairway To Gilligan's and Kennedy Girls. I think I heard Birdbrain back in the day and thought it was William S. Burroughs. Great stuff!
As a Midwesterner I didn't have access to those Bay area singles ... but I do have that Roy Loney 7", which is a treasured ep, which I pulled to play. Thanks for the prompt. And as a side note I dig the channel. Keep on truckin'.
Cool Stuff! I actually have The Spitballs(Full LP version), and the 2 Little Roger singles. Little Roger is my cousin-in-law. I remember seeing Roy Loney and the Phantom Movers perform live. I remember hearing that Contractions single and also that Ginsburg 45, maybe on KSAN or maybe KFJC....Thanks for the memories!!
Nice thread. I think I bought all the Roy Loney albums back in the day at Moby Disc in Sherman Oaks. It was the record store used in Spinal Tap. Many a time, my wife and I would drive through the Hollywood Hills listening to a homemade tape of the Phantom Movers. Good times.
I shopped at the first Moby in Van Nuys (off Victory). Mike Breul was a Moby store manager - he posted images of Spinal Tap in the shop on his F/B page.
Just saw Puddles Pity Party do "Stairway to Gilligan's Island" back in December at the venue in SW Virginia where I am the Box Office Manager. Great version. I remember the Spitballs record. Roy Loney records are all great.
i really dug the contractions..reminded me of early blondie at cbgb's...and how could i not like ginsberg... it was great hearing the spitballs again..i used to have the first two earthquake albums, as well as the modern lovers, greg kihn, etc.. very cool idea..stay well my friend.. peace..rocky
Aah! The 3 year old me, in 1962, went crazy whenever Telstar by The Tornados came on the radio! It was only the 2nd British single to go to Number 1 in the States, after Stranger On The Shore.
"Infamous" is an apt description. The Little Roger song was a staple on Barry Hansen's Dr. Demento show. As many know, Barry and Randy California were housemates in Topanga Canyon. Ironically, Robert Plant liked the parody. Thanks, Mazzy !
well, I'm not from the Bay area but I am heavy into punk and I have never heard any of these. So thank you for opening my eyes and ears. Never heard of the Spitballs but I did throw many in grade school.
Thanks for playing The Contractions and Roy Loney, too! I used to know Cathy Peck, and I hope she's doing all right. Too bad you didn't get to "Head Cheese" or anything else by Psychotic Pineapple. The Readymades and J.D.Buhl would have been nice to hear, too.
Cool to hear you play records. Those are some cool singles. Contractions and Bird Brain were my favesl. Hopefully they're so obscure you don't get any copyright strikes.
Since you're covering unknowns or never before heard 45's (of which I enjoyed by the way), can you find out anything about a band from the 60's who only put out (1) 45 called "The Exposure" with Patricia Fowler. Beautiful song, beautiful voice. I realize your channel isn't about searching out unknown music artists, but if you know anything about her, I would appreciate some info. thanks
If you like off beat songs, Then Australian band TISM is for you (This Is Serious Mum), particularly their LP Great Trucking Songs for the Renaissance. The song titles are an experience in themselves. The song taking down Jim Morrison is brutal.
Yep... I have never heard any of those 5 records... however, the Roy Loney song would not have been out of place on the first Phantom Movers record... which I have heard many times.
I have the Artistic as Hell EP, great record. And I didn't know there was a Spitballs single but i do have the quite enjoyable LP. As for the Contractions, with Mary Kelly in the band, hopefully they don't cover Link Wray's Jack the Ripper !
Rather Ripped! I had forgotten the name of that store. Bought some great stuff there. They had a poster on the wall "Residents For Presidents". Love it. I have that Contractions 45. There album was pretty good too.
Drivin' by Pearl Harbor and the Explosions on 415 Records, Rock & Roll Weirdos by Leila and the Snakes & The KYA 1969 Tom Cambell Interview with John Lennon. Nice to know that I have One LP that you don't have The Spitballs. Let me know next time your in Portland. Saw one Pearl Harbors first shows at the Keystone Plan Alto, the crowd wanted an encore, the band did not have any other songs so they repeated the opening song.
I do have the Leila & the Snakes Pearl Harbor 45 and saw them with the Tubes several times. I used to have that Tom Cambell Lennon recording, but not on vinyl. Thanks!!!
What you might call the Spitballs is a 'studio band' because it was made up Berserkly artists or who might have been around at the time. The formula wasn't new. Cameo-Parkway did it way back when. Allen Ginsberg. lol Many, if not all of his 'readings' couldn't be played on the radio. Definitely not a Rod McKuen.
Mazzy, I was recently given a box of 45s with plenty of songs I have never heard before. One was a local band from Tacoma called Chinook. Song, What's Your Name. ruclips.net/video/HsGSrbH2YdI/видео.htmlsi=9NvhBncPHKFBSPvt Have you heard of this band before?
Records you never heard? LOL I bet I got hundreds of 45s very few people ever heard Mazzy.... I have 2 or 3 albums like that too. On the albums and some 45s I can't find any reference's to them anywhere on the internet. Not knowing anything about the band or album is a real pain in the ass for me. When my curiosity is piqued it has to be satisfied or it's an open sore for years. I gotta "find out" and I'm not shy about it either. I guess I'm like that about everything.... In that state I become annoying probably. LOL
@ ah okay, I didn’t realise that was the only way RUclips could pay the artists fees. Fair enough. I wonder if they could’ve put the ads in start middle and end tho without ruining the flow of the video

Happy to you you back ✌🏼🤠
Please, I beg you, ( I hate to beg), give us more 45 RPM single play sessions!

You win. 🤠😎🌟
I remember my Goldmine years fondly! Just pouring through each issue's listings as soon as it appeared in my mailbox. Different times, for sure.
Great episode Mazzy!!!
Thank you ✌🏼
Birdbrain seems apropos for the times we are living in. Lovely tune. Fav - Telstar.

That was excellent.
I saw Little Roger and the Goosebumps at Winterland, they opened for the Ramons.
heavy on the power pop! Nice Groovies related records. Aware of, but I don't remember seeing those. What a pleasure having Alan back
I almost forgot the Tubes were also on that show with the Ramones and Little Roger.
Nicely done , hi from Canada

“Birdbrain” is brilliant!
You’re right, I have never heard of these records! Thanks for playing them. The Contractions remind me of early Costello meets Go Gos. ✌🏻🎶
They sound a lot like Blondie too 🌟
Great video! I love seeing 7"s as much as a drum kit. 😍
Skeleton Or Something The Other is my favorite McCartney. That was 5 I’ve never heard before.
Mazzy , the one Kinks side record sound like Cinnamon Girl from Neil Young. What are they playing Cinnamon Girl or just sound like Cinnamon Girl?
@@Vinylclassicrecords you didn’t pay attention to my intro. Kennedy girls is not the Kinks Side. But it’s the same group group.
Jesus Mazzy. You literally have everything! Kudos!!

Telstar sounds something like a soundtrack to a Spaghetti Western ala "High Planes Drifter" meets Dick Dale... Cheers!

To my amazement I own 3 of these all found at Record Exchange, Notting Hill, London.
I while back someone but the Spitballs version of Telstar on a mix they Gave me! I think It was my friend Tyler! Thumbs up! Trish
Cool to hear you play records. Those are some cool singles. Contractions and Bird Brain were my favesl. Hopefully they're so obscure you don't get any copyright strikes.
You get the notice within 5 minutes if the songs are blocked or you can’t monetize. In this case I can revenue share Maybe because they are so indie
@ Thanks. That’s good to know.
That was an interesting!! Enjoyed
Hey I want to Live With A Kennedy Girl too

Back Door Man (1965) by The Muleskinners. English beat group with Faces connections. The single costs hundreds.
Gonna have to hit the attic for my 7” schizzle
My local shop just got in a copy of the Little Roger Kinks Sides EP last week, but without the picture sleeve. That Allen Ginsberg cut is choice.

Love Birdbrain👍
Glad I'm Not A Kennedy (1987) by Shona Laing (New Zealand)
Joe Meek the great madman though.

"Birdbrain" seems very appropriate today for 47....
Totally. Topical 👊🏻
