    Oh, and also, I saw Ron Carter perform at Birdland last year. Went backstage to meet him and have him sign a copy of the only record he was on that I happened to have with me when I was in New York, which was Herbie Hancock‘ sEmpyrean Isles. And, watching him sign my album I had the same thought. He had the most beautiful, long, graceful fingers.

    Great video, Mazzy! Sometimes I like all the bells and whistles. I just got the Sonny Rollins live at the Village Vanguard and I love it. It’s beautiful. I love the extra booklet with it. Gorgeous. And what a pressing! Interestingly enough, I also just bought the Beatles Abbey Road anniversary edition because universal had a 50% off sale. Of course, I know the music to a certain extent, heard it all my life. Like the Beatles was never a major Beatles fan. But, just listened to it on my Planar 3 turntable with my really good headphones and it sounds incredible. I almost wept at the brilliance of that album. And, it wasn’t a big bells and whistles box set, and it was probably even digitally remastered. But, as you say, it’s about the music, so who cares!? Having said that, I do want to track down a vintage all analog copy, but you get my point.

    Hiya Mazzy, just wanted to ask that since you pefer the 33rpm version of LPs if possible you havent thought about the Speakers Corner pressing of Boz Scaggs which was cut by Kevin, pressed at Pallas? I don 't have another version but it sounds great to me for what its worth.

      You beat me to it Ian! I too have the Speaker's Corner pressing of Scaggs' debut album. I bought it before the 45 RPM version was released, and would have bought the 33-1/3 version anyway. Like Mazzy, I don't like breaking up album sides. The integrity of the musical programming is more important to me than the slight increase in sound quality provided by the shorter playing time per album side. The only exception I made for was for the MoFi One-Step version of Carole King's Tapestry. All other versions sound terrible.

    I am 100 percent with you on the unnecessary "bling." Give me a excellent mastered, quiet, flat, 33 1/3 album in a nice quality jacket and I am happy. I'd go as far as sell the "bling", such as extensive notes, photos of the master tapes and boxes, etc. as a separate item.

  • @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner
    @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner 12 дней назад +2

    Thanks, Mazzy - I find that you clarify some principles that should be more prominent in many reissues (and I completely agree):
    1) Don't break up original works on 2 sides into 4 sides / 45 rpm. That's technique over music (and the reason I don't buy Atlantic 75's).
    2) The oversized boxes (especially UHQR) are superfluous. The fake "I-look-like-a-book-with-my-spine" devalues the release in my eyes.
    3) "Clearity Vinyl" is not unique (or particularly excellent )- or Clear.... I have JVC releases (Victor Musical Industries) from 1980 which have less surface noise. And new Craft releases. And Sam's Artisans... And...

I'm not a 45 rpm double record guy, and I'm not going to spend $60 on those or the super vinyl. Don't even get me started on the over priced UHQR's, I don't need no stinkin' webster's encyclopedia bling.. Like you say Mazzy, it's about the music.

    Another great, informative and yes, critical, video. Steve Hoffman was on a live video chat last night and pretty much agreed with Kevin Grey on his assessment of the One Step process and 45 rpm vs 33 and 1/3. Where I am going to give MOFI and Analog Productions some props/kudos, however, is that they are producing (mastering/cutting and packaging) some absolutely beautiful reissues. For those of us that remember the way the majors handled their reissues in the late 70's and early 80's, these new reissues are NOT those! By in large, those vintage reissues suffered from bad packaging, crappy vinyl and questionable mastering. This, IMO, was a big reason why MOFI, Nautilus, et al came into being in the mid to late 70's as they filled a niche for those wanting a good sounding pressing of a favorite album(s) that the majors just couldn't or wouldn't reissue properly.

    Not that I am or even could come to Chad's defense , hell who am I? But, I will say many of the Atlantic 75s on 45 are smash hits who deserve the treatment of 45 speed re-releases to be the ultimate of their re-release. Most of us have already own(ed) the 33 versions. We still enjoy them and understand musicians intent on two sides. But to be introspective of the content for me nothing allows a closer listen than 45 speed LPs. For instance I have had friends or family who may have never heard say a "YES" album and would like to. I would play the 33 version for them for their first experience. I have other friends who are "YES" fanatics and when they come over I will play the 45 version. Same LP and I find two distinct situations where I/we will listen to one over the other. Let me add on the other side of the coin what Chad has done with the Pablo Series( and now that he has announced Round Two of Pablo releases,) in many instances introducing or re-introducing many listeners to the great Pablo Series Artists deserves honorable mentions. Other than Chad I'm not sure who would have taken on the project and the risk???? Remastered Pablo on 33 at that $ 40 price point is a bargain and a blessing, I for one can thank him for bringing to me and the market these great great musicians and recordings for us to discover or re-discover. If not for Acoustic Sounds who would have done this? Many a great evening I have spent listening to these Pablo's. Subsequently, it's been almost like a new world for me and my collecting. I have purchased a couple of dozen Pablo's outside of Chad's re-issues. At the end of the day I can only wonder if the "Bling" on one side doesn't also help out the opportunity/risk like the Pablo Series on the other side? I hope Chad keeps taking those risks. Love the discussion.

    Excellent Video, thanx. IMO Chad Kassem only get the license for the Atlantic 75 Series to do 45 rpm releases, because Rhino would do the 33 rpm for themselves. I'm with you that 45 rpm is not the perfect thing for ProgRock, but ProgRock is the genre where excellent sound quality makes a big difference. For example Genesis - The Lamb lies down on Broadway. The difference between the OG and the 45 rpm from Analogue Productions is like night and day. I'm happy to get up several times to turn it over. But you're right, not every album has to have a 45 rpm version. Greetings from 🇩🇪

    Aside from steps & super vinyl - I also don't want a box with my records. They take up too much shelf space, which is already a problem if you have a lot of records. I wish represses would just come in standard weight, slim spine covers and save the extra weight/cardboard for more shelf-space.

    I have to agree Mas: at the end of the day, the bells and whistles on audiophile records are often not necessary, specifically with regard to packaging. Cut it down. The vinyl formulations, I also can agree, if the standard pressings sound quiet and clear, is it really necessary? It can be fun though!

    I’m curious about the 1977 remix of Boz Scaggs, done a year after the release of Silk Degrees. I assume it was to “level up” the sonics to sound mid-70s modern? I haven’t compared the two and wondering how different are the mixes, and if the new Atlantic series version bears any similarities to one or the other mix.

    I’m not into any of these expensive records you showed except one, The Eddie Hazel album. What burns me up about this record and a few others is that it was reissued just a couple of years ago by Real Gone Music, not good mastering but they did reissued it. Now Rhinos releases it and I now feel tempted to go and spend more money on the same album. That really stinks, why can’t they just put out a proper release. I despise these labels that constantly do this. That’s why I stick with original pressings,

    Really, it's whatever you want. If you want to honor a favorite recording with a lux package, I think that's great. (I'll make fun of you if you buy a One-Step just because you "want it in my collection.") Soundwise, so many people working on digital productions get no credit or even disdain from YT creators. Mastering engineers like Paschal Byrne ( *Camel* reissue for Universal), Bob Ludwig ( the original edition of *Kiko* by Los Lobos on A&M) & Bernie Grundman (Travis' *The Invisible Band* reissue on Craft) turn out beautiful CDs for not much $$. The 1990's 2-for Beach Boys CDs by Mark Linett & Joe Gastwirt contain some of the most headphone-friendly sonics imaginable plus copious liner notes by Mark.
