I sold a CD copy of AC/DC's Highway to Hell that I bought for $5 for around $200 on Discogs. I had to do some real digging to find out what was going on, as other editions were selling for just a few dollars as expected. Turned out my copy was one of the earliest CD prints & it had been transferred directly from the original masters without any remastering applied, transferred as AAD, so it was the only "original" untouched mix of the album available digitally. All other CD editions after that - including all those released to streaming services - had been remastered & "fiddled with". That is why my copy was really rare and fetched such a relatively high price even though it was "just" a CD, not even mint. Because that specific mix as a digital release was very rare.

Didn’t expect to see Coil on here! A pivotal 80s duo in the avant-garde/industrial scene. I see that boxset was released a couple years before the passing of John Balance.
I’ve been loving the band this past year, so thanks for sharing some history about them I didn’t know previously! They have a great back-catalogue of genre-defying records if you’re still interested.

I've recently started collecting CDs of Japanese metal bands. The Japanese music industry is volatile to say the least and albums can quickly go out of print and can be difficult to locate. Some bands will release a CD with a limited run Boxed Set that includes a concert DVD or Blu-ray. Those can be extremely hard to find and I've paid as much as $180 for a rare box just so I can watch the 'extra' concert Blu-ray.

CD collector here, with some vinyl. Discogs is a great resource. I started cataloging my collection right after the 2017 Northern California fires. I have almost 70 successful purchases on there, but I always check seller reviews. I also cross-reference Amazon, eBay, cdjapan, ImportCD, etc. for the best price. I find the chase is better than the catch when trying to fill out my collection.
Luckily, with my level of completionism, if I can acquire a physical copy of every available track through a retail $10 copy, then I don't care about the rare limited edition fanclub-only OOP pressing. But, it is an expensive hobby sometimes... I'm not proud of how much I've shelled out on box sets that contain the only CD releases of rare B-sides, promos, and/or previously unreleased material.

Not to be snarky, but, as a classical music fan, saying you had to look up how to pronounce "Herbert von Karajan" would be a little like me saying I needed to look up the pronunciation of "Beatles" or "Elvis Presley." He's probably the biggest (and most controversial) celebrity in classical music in the 20th century.

Inform, warn against thieves and do not buy exorbitantly expensive records: CDs, SACDs, vinyls. Let's respect our own work and the money we earn hard. The case of Karajan's set of albums is simply a cabaret. Not funny. The world is not made up of millionaires.

I found some similar pricing for rare CDs on eBay. I still use Discogs a lot. Thanks for watching!

I never understood, when I look up any album sold list on Discogs it normally only shows a handful of sales withing a 3 to 5 year spread and somehow that’s what their worth at the moment? Thousands of an album sells, but we’re going to base value off of 5 or so sales?

I don't thing you can call those a top 10..... if some were box sets, maybe a double would have been ok🤷‍♂️

Yeah fair point. Maybe in the next video on eBay solds I will limit to only single CDs. Thanks for watching!

How about doing a top 10, 45rpm singles. There were numerous articles published over the years but I am sure that information is long outta date by 2025. The most I've paid is $125 but it was a private label release limited to 500 copies and only had local appeal.

There were 23 copies of Coil because they propably have 25 fans or so. If you were stupid enough to buy this at $2500 or whatever you will never ever be able to recoup your money as there is no market for it.

I think you make a fair point but perhaps those buyers never plan on recouping on the cost. People pay a lot for collectables in other hobbies too. I understand the feeling that it's too much though, lol. Thanks for watching.

Why people talk about it online ? Hyping some CDs to increase prices even more ? For example I collect CDs NOT LISTED ONLINE AT ANY DATABASE OR EVEN ZERO GOOGLE RESULTS.

Fair point but I don’t see this is as hype more like information. You’ll see most people in the comments aren’t running out to spend this kind of money lol. There are high priced items sold in every hobby 😊. Thanks for watching!
