  • Different sort of video today. I was unable to find a decent guide out there to WOL a computer from a Google Home. This is my simple solution.
    What you'll need:
-Google Assistant, which is what Google Home uses
    -Android phone
    -IFTTT ifttt.com
    -Automagic (or Tasker) play.google.co...
-PushBullet (or something like it that works with Tasker.) www.pushbullet...

Every single thing worked like a charm. One of the best tutorial videos I've ever watched. If you follow the steps carefully and precisely it will work. NOTE: For me, Automagic must be running on your phone in order for it to work so I recommend getting Autostart on your phone and configuring it to automatically start Automagic at start-up. This will mean you won't have to manually open it every time you want to turn your PC on which is probably more effort than just turning your PC on and it will stay open in the background, with a notification telling you so, even if you close it in recent apps. If you want to close it you will have to force stop the app in android settings.

For those who didn't get it working, there is a much simpler way to do it without Pushbullet :
    - on Ifttt App, do as the video says ( remember to activate notification access to the App)
    - then go to automagic ( same, remember to allow access to notifications) and create a Flow who looks like that :
    * if notification received from Ifttt App containing "Insert your wake-on-lan phrase here"
    * then send wake-on-lan packet to your pc ( the method in the video works pretty well)
    * then delete the Ifttt notification containing your phrase.
It worked perfectly fine for me !
    Nice video by the way.

The part at the beginning is actually really cool. You could just poke in to your room and ask if google could turn your computer on.

Error Fix "Could not find a MAC address for the host"
I had the same problem. Ignore the error message. type ipconfig /all in cmd and grab the physical address. make sure to use : instead of -. CMD displays the physical address (which is the mac address) with - as spaces but this app uses : instead.
and then under IP/Port just type the first three sections from ur IPv4 address u also get via ipconfig /all and substitute the 4th section of ur ipv4 address with 255. make sure you use the data from the right entry. when u access the internet from the PC with LAN use the LAN adapter data in CMD. when u use a wifi adapter use this data instead. in my case, there are a bunch of differents data sets when I use ipconfig /all. so just make sure u r using the correct data.
    done. works like a charm

for everybody that was having a problem with waking from sleep but not from shutdown here's what made it work for me after 2 hours of digging (windows 10):
there is a third AND EQUALLY IMPORTANT option as those mentioned before (magic packet and bios enabled wake on lan), you simply go to control panel-->power options-->on the top left side click "choose what the power buttons do"-->click on "change setting that are currently unavailable"-->and finally UNCHECK "turn on fast startup"--> click save and you're done!
this was literally the thing that made the difference for this whole thing working or not for me. i suppose if my OS was defaulted to this then everybody else's OS is too.. so i would recommend the author of this video to add this info somewhere so people could do this extra step making sure they get the desired results.

Understandingly, I used this method as a way to ease the use of my computer. Unfortunately the whole system doesn’t want to boot up anymore, it was sent me into a repairing windows loop. Using all methods to access my computer it was resolved that nothing could be done and since AUS keyboards don’t have a backslash on command prompt, I got stuck leaving me to reset my computer. I wish I had never used this method because this means I have to reinstall 8.9 terabytes worth of coding that I have been working on. This isn’t you fault but rather I have completely destroyed my system. 😭

I have fast boot disabled in BIOS and in windows power settings, its a pain in the ass to find some of these settings but when you see them you will know. I also used a broadcast address calculator to help find the correct address as the video wasn't clear on what it would be. Otherwise a very helpful and well presented video :)

Thankyou so much for this video, this is going to be so helpful as I put together my smart bedroom/workspace over the next few days. One quick question:
If I set the phrase 'turn on the computer' up in ifttt as you have, THEN add the phrase 'turn on the computer' to a Google assistant routine, can i have her turn on the computer and also configure my lights, music, fan, curtains, etc simultaneously? Essentially adding the wake command to a more complex routine I already have?

@@Resengan21 your lucky i have notifications on xD but i used a second phone i had laying around which i kept permanenlty on at home that sent a wake on lan command to my entire home network when i messaged it via this app! This bypasses the need for an arp list but only really works as intended if you only want to start 1 device.
Alternativly do this with an arduino or something else
As another option make a pcb with a chip on it that toggles power that gets activated via an app on your phone remotely via internet (or buy some smarthome powerplugs that work over wifi) then set your pc to start after power los and resume so you cut power in off state when ur done then give power when u want it to turn on and pc will auto start.

It's so sad the the google home device would be able to WoL on it's own, but you have to use 3 cloud services and 2 devices and be on the same WiFi to get this working.

    • @TopHATTwaffle
      @TopHATTwaffle  6 лет назад +1

You can do it with a single service, ha-bridge (github.com/bwssytems/ha-bridge), but this requires a server in house. The system in the video does not require you to be on the same wifi at all. You can do a lot of home automation things without the run around of services if you learn the Google API, but that's a lot of work for something that is simply done with services that I already had and use daily. I'd love you see a better system if you have one.

Google should just release a better way themselves, lol. With over 2 Billion computers in use and 183 Million brand new computers sold in 2017 alone, it seems like something that should already be within the Google Home app settings. I have an Asus router with built in WOL feature where you can wake using the MAC. IFTTT has some Asus router applets but I have not taken a look at them yet to see what they do. I wonder if its possible for Google Home > IFTTT to ask the Asus router to WOL any MAC I chose? That would be even better I think because there is zero lag when I use the WOL feature inside my Asus router. Just instant on via ethernet (or very low latency for sure).

Hi, thanks for posting this video. Rewatched all steps, read all comments, still can't figure out whats wrong. Tried Setun's method as well, to no avail. IFTTT works, puhsbullets receives the note, but it seems automagic nor automate is receiving the pushbullet note as the flow in both apps don't execute. WOL works independently, PC is configured with fixed IP. So it seems that the commands stops at Pushbullet and goes no further. Allowed accessibility settings for both automagic and automate to receive notifications from other apps on my tablet, still no luck. What am I missing?

It can workq even if your computer is fully shutdown.
In wi-fi it is possible that it doesnt work.

How did you configure this? In the windows settings it states the WOL works in "hibernation" (sleep mode)

Keep in mind that Wake on LAN is usually a BIOS setting and does work when the system is fully shutoff as the network card uses just a bit of power waiting for the packet to arrive and it can tell your computer to wake up. It's not just a software thing.

There's an free alternative to Tasker so you can do all this for free as well. It's called Automate if you want to have a look at it

this is not working anymore. IFTTT has changed and you need to pay for the app. if for some reason you get it to work it will only work when you are @home.

    • @TopHATTwaffle

If the computer only wakes from Sleep, that means something on the computer isn't allowing it to wake from S5 (Soft Off) power state. Check to make sure the Ethernet port stays active when the computer is shut down. Typically there are 2 lights on a network port, 1 green and 1 amber. The amber one should stay on. The port your computer is connected to should also stay on. If the port does not stay active the computer cannot be woken from the network. If you hard turn off, or remove power to the computer it won't be able to use WOL for the next power on.

    • @Lepardi
      @Lepardi 6 лет назад

TopHATTwaffle seems like the ethernet port loses power when I shot down my pc :( is there a way to fix that?
