    My Dr prescribed Triluma but it costs 300 over here in NY. I have been using Nuetrogena Retinal skin wrinkle treatment in the jar, Clinique Vitamin C serum and instead of using Laura Mercier translucent powder on my face which I have used often, I use revlon colorstay foundation that has spf 15 and use Caldesene powder which contains 15% zinc oxide. It works amazingly well and it is super water resistant. It containsaloe vera gel and chamomile as well.

    I used to have amazingly clear skin, never put anything on my face and I was happy. One day I decided to use a moisturizer with alpha hydroxy acid, I used it in the summer, went to the beach, pool, etc. By the end of summer, I had developed strange brown patches on my forehead. I went to my dermatologist, he said it was melasma, it was brought on by the combination of AHA and the sun.
    He gave me 4% bleaching cream. After 20 years, if I stop the cream the melasma comes right back within 3 weeks. By now it was all over my face, and I was up to 10%.
    A couple of years ago I lost my job, and could not afford to go to my dermatologist with no insurance, so I stopped using bleaching creams, expensive creams, expensive exfoliating agents, I just let myself accept the melasma.
    Guess what happened, the melasma has greatly faded!!! It has NOT disappeared completely, but it has visibly faded, it’s much better than before.
    I remember once a long time ago I asked my dermatologist how did this happen, how did it spread, he told me melasma is a hive, sometimes it appears when your skin is irritated by a combination of chemicals and heat, it comes mysteriously, and sometimes it disappears or fades mysteriously. Looks like he was right!
    What I learned is not to put too many harmful chemicals on my face, even natural “remedies” are harmful, not only that but they make your skin very, very sensitive to the point that you’re afraid of exposing your face to any sunlight, even if you avoid the sun, you can still damage your skin with heat or fluorescent light, or the light of your computer screen. To me that’s not the way I want to live.
    Lesser is always better!!!

      Gosh I'm so sorry to hear it Mel. Sometime we think we are "helping" and are in fact "messing things up". I do believe in leaving it alone too if you can. For now I'm pretty happy with my treatment but I think 10 times before using something drastic. The best thing is to be consulting with a doctor and follow their directions :)
      Thanks for leaving us a comment, I'm sure so many of us can relate!!

      Sorry to hear about your bad experiences. The reason why you develop the melasma is bc you use AHA and maybe not enough sun protection. I dont know if you use sunscreen regularly or not since you didnt mentioned in your comment. But when comes to using any actives such as, AHA, BHA, retinoid, niacinamide, lactic acids, hydroquinone, etc.. spf protection is a must! Because they will make you skin super sensitive to the sun. Most US sunscreen are mainly more focus for uvb protection and not uva. When using actives ingredients uva protection is especially important. The reason is because uva have longer wave length and are much stronger that it penetrates through the inner layers of our skin causing hyperpigmentation such as melasma, sunspot, uneven skin, darkening any acne spots, etc... if you want more of uva protection look more into Japanese and korean sunscreen. Lastly sunscreen only last 2 hrs at most depending on how much you apply. Esp if swimming need to use waterproof one and need to reapply in between breaks. Always use sunscreen daily even when its cloudy outside or indoor bc unlike uvb, the uva ray will pass through the clouds and windows. Hopefully these tips helps! 😊

      That’s interesting! I wish I had the same results. I haven’t treated my melasma in a couple years (except the recommended sunscreen) and it’s only worsened. It used to be on my forehead only and now it’s all over my cheeks as well. I wonder what some differences are. Hormones have much to do with it, especially with women who have had children. I did not have children and am peri-menopausal. Im wondering if that’s why it’s getting worse. 🤔

    Hi there karina. I Luv, Luv your review. Because of this review I took the courage and went to see a dermatalogist for the melasma that's been on my face, and I also got the triluma. And I am happy to report that the melasma has been clearing so fast that I just can't believe it's almost gone, after so many years trying so many expensive products. I think I should have gone sooner that way I could have saved my money. But oh well, anyway your review Inspired me and I took a chance. And I want to thank you soo much, because if it wasn't for this review I would still have the melasma. I hope that this review helps other women like myself to take the leap. May God Bless You and give you your desires of your heart.

    You want to be under a doctors care for hydroquinone. There are other options. Azelaic acid is an option. I had IPL laser and it came back ONLY because I didnt use sunscreen. Lesson learned. I have had melasma for at least 10 years. Last 2 weeks it has finally started to go away. My derm put me on Azalaic Acid, which is the only thing I had not tried. After 6 weeks, no improvement. I went to Walmart looking for something else and found a bottle of 1.8% salicylic acid.Brand is Asepxia acne lotion.I wash my face as usual, then take a cotton ball & wipe my face with this lotion once a day. My melasma has almost disappeared. I was using a 20% peel once a week, but it responded to a daily treatment with a lower strength.

    Sunscreen usually needs to be reapplied every 80-90min. Don’t wait for the 2 hour mark. SPF in makeup is not reliable by itself but a nice addition if you already applied sunscreen. The powdered sunscreen is nice as an addition on top of makeup but for non-makeup wearer, lotion is better. There are a few interesting videos that shows how effective types of sunscreen are using a UV gun.

    Even making pauses, if you use hidroquinone for long term it might improve to ocronose, darker marks with no treatment.
    Try alpha arbutin, niacinamide that makes results without problems in the future.

    I love that you explain the difference between a chemical sunscreen and a physical sunscreen. I heard that the chemical sunscreen allows the uva and uvb rays to sit on the skin and combats them causing free radicals to form. For sunscreen I use Cotz flawless complexion spf50 with 20% zinc oxide. My makeup also has titanium dioxide 18% and zinc oxide 22% it’s by bare minerals. In addition to all that I wear a wide brimmed hat when I go out in the sun.

    Ive had melasma for years and have tried so many different concealers and makeup tricks and it’s really hard. I had hydroquinone and many different creams and also as a last resort tried the laser. It’s still there and I’m sooooo neurotic about not letting sun hit my face if I’m outside or driving especially. It’s incredibly annoying and I’m conscious of it but I think it’s mainly for if an issue for me than for other people. I was always told to use baby sunscreen bc it’s the most pure and strong. I use Neutrogena baby sunscreen SPF 50 and it’s 21.6% pure zinc oxide as an active ingredient. It goes on white and I have to rub it in. Yes it’s true that heat (from cooking) and also light from bulbs or overhead lights also won’t help melasma but I mean you can’t do sh*t about that. My dermatologist also told me to not rub in my sunscreen lol which is dumb. But anyway, for Asian and other ethnic skin it’s important to talk to your dermatologist especially bc it’s MORE susceptible to getting worse if you do treatments like laser. So try everything non-invasive first before doing laser!!! I currently use Estée Lauder Dbl Wear Camo Makeup for Face and Body and that is doing it for now.

      Angela Kim thanks for leaving me this comment Angela. My heart goes out to you girl. It’s a struggle and there’s only so much we can do. I have heard of melasma that never goes away, I wonder if it’s genetic for you? Even though it’s caused by hormones there’s just so much that can trigger it. Anyway, the ones on my face have almost completely disappeared but they were caused by birth control later in my life and when I noticed it I immediately stopped taking the pills. That maybe helped? I really don’t know. Have you tried the natural remedies like lemon and such?

    Powder sunscreens are great for reapplying SPF and PA BUT, the amount of product we actually use in reapplying is just way way way too little to give us the full SPF. It's better than not doing it, so that's what I do, but we're not getting anything close to the stipulated SPF value.

I’m happy to know that I now have the right products, the waiting is awful though. Can anyone recommend tips for fast tracking healing? Or maybe something I can just do everyday. A supplement or something?

      MsAngela998 I take an organic MSM powder (mixed in water with a squeeze of lemon). It has done amazing things for my skin (plus has helped with many other things) but I’ve noticed my skin looks better than it has in yeeeears! I first used an MSM capsule and didn’t notice anything...found out that the capsules have fillers and things. I got the powder and noticed a difference quickly. My problems (malasma) started in my mid 30’s and progressively got worse over the years. Now, in my mid 40’s...my skin is looking so much better!

      Becareful, I have melasma and went to Aesthetician, and she insisted that IPL would help it does not it’s only a quick fix for about maybe 3 to 6 months and then comes back with a vengeance and worse. I see Dr. Whitney Bowe and she reamed me a new one and said no laser is going to cure the melasma, she also said she doesn’t care if they promised me the world it’s not gonna cure the melasma. You have to be very careful also using the. Hydroquinone, because it can make it worse. I use Laroche Posey 60. And try really hard to say to not get too much sun exposure which is so difficult even heat makes it worse and I’m in the medical field, so using the mass make it 10 times worse. Good luck

    High-dose hydroquinone may cause skin cancer over time with long-term use. IF you use it short-term and *then fix the INTERNAL, often-hormonal reason why the melasma has occurred* you should be ok.

    • @KarinaStyleDiaries
      @KarinaStyleDiaries  6 лет назад +2

      Drea East Coast thank you so much for your comment! And yes it’s true that high dosages of hydroquinone is linked to cancer that’s why it’s important to use it only in small quantities and small areas!

      miya you will want to visit a doctor to have levels checked to see if there is an imbalance. some women experience melasma while pregnant so it sometimes goes away after and some get it because they have hormonal levels that are imbalanced.

  • @WakingAngels

    Just my opinion here. I have fought Melasma forever. hydroquinone stops Melatonin. Melatonin is what we call a tan. This is your natural sunscreen your body produces. This is why I think they say hydroquinone is cancer causing. My opinion only. If you’re going to use this you need sunblock. I believe in two things regarding melasma. Treatment and maintenance. EXFOLIATION. Dry skin cannot be saved neither can skin with melasma it needs to come off. Retinols 2-3 week if your skin can handle it. It will let you know. Medium peels every few months if you can. MAINTENANCE. Sunblock or minimize sun exposure. So either sunblock or live in a cardboard box 😵. Don’t be discouraged when you start these things that it appears worse when you start and maintain your routine. It might but this just means you’re getting closer to the final layer. Be committed. 6 months of hard work only to be ruined by 15 minutes in the sun not worth it. Use a face cloth at the end of your shower like after you’ve washed your face to get dead skin off. If your exfoliation is working you will almost immediately notice you don’t need as much moisturizer. This tells you the dead skin is gone or going. Either find a cream with retinol or get it prescribed. Start slow build your skins tolerance. Be careful and cautious with any treatment. I used Jessner peel %14 2-3 per year. Avoiding doing this in the summer. SUNBLOCK SUNBLOCK SUNBLOCK. As far as makeup I found pink/warm undertones make grey and blue ashy looking textures try neutral undertones. Applying with fingers gives you ultimate control. I try to use mineral sunblocks because I believe they are better for your skin. Recently tried a tinted one which made alllll the difference. Someone once said when you feel like giving up remember the reason you started. Feel free to reach out with any questions or thoughts.

      Hi. I have been using hq for one year almost taking a month break between every session. And it is showing great results but the break between the sessions are the toughest for me because not only my melasma comes back but the melanin production speeds up as well which results in darkening of my skin. I have tried using niacinamide, tranexamic acid, Kojic acid, glycolic acid etc to maintain my result but nothing works. I am afraid if I continue to use hq I will have to deal with bigger problems in future. What do you think I should do

    I used same product but the dr. I went to said for me to use it for 3 months and stop for 3 months and keep alternating like that,But the reason She told me to stop after 3 months for a break was to keep the hydroquinone from darkening the hyper pigmentation.That there was a high risk if used over 3 months without a break between.

    I only have melasma on my upper lip. It is grey brown nothing covers it. I had been using new skin care for about a month and it looked like it had gone completely away. Yesterday, I had to do a lot of yard work. I put tons of sunscreen and used a sun hat. It came back darker than ever. Now I don't want to use the skin care I was using in fear it happens again. I think I am just going to accept it, and live my life.

    Hello! How long did it take for the melasma on your face to go away with this method you used? More specifically the tri luma cream, I once was on a chemical peel cream and that seemed to work fine, the melasma was fading slowly, but the peeling was so bad, I couldnt wear makeup or anything to disguise the redness/peeling, I am going to see the dermatologist again, but Im curious since I also have the melasma on that same spots you did, moustache, cheeks, but also in the middle of my forehead and nose. Thank you beautiful!!

      Mary McFly hi! For me it started to work right away and I saw a huge difference on the first week. Keep in mind we should stay out of the sun and heat at all times which is pretty hard! That being said a combination of hydroquinone, retinol and peelings should be ideal :)

It also looks like I had microdermabrasion. Is this normal? My instructions are once a day before bed. I have sensitive skin. Is this something I should be concerned about?

    • @pickledginger5876
      @pickledginger5876 5 лет назад

      Melanie Montoya-Martinez no, it isn't. 'Natural' generally contains fruit oils, which can cause a reaction. ACV is a pretty tough acid, it can burn you. Be careful.(I did it, so I know...and because it's a strong acid.....science)

    • @melaniemartinez7629
      @melaniemartinez7629 5 лет назад

      Most foods that we eat have acid, are they not safe to consume because they have acid? I tried Tri Luma years ago and it made my melasma worse. hydroquinone is banned in some countries because it’s proven to be very dangerous. ACV is proven to have a long list of health and beauty benefits, if you use it properly (eg: diluting it) you will be fine. So far my skin is looking amazing! Thank you for your advice though 😉

And if after you have your face clear did you continued using it. Appreciate a response thank you God Bless.
