The Rothfuss Situation

  • Patrick Rothfuss has been at the same time one of the most celebrated and most vilified, controversial fantasy A-listers for quite a while. Considering Name of the Wind is my favourite book of all time, I thought it was important I explored some of my thoughts, especially in light of what has recently happened regarding the apology for the undelivered chapter. I have joked about his inactivity for quite some time, made sketches about him even, but the situation and the public reaction has quite frankly got out of hand.

I honestly cannot believe that he wrote book one. Call me a conspiracy theorist but I am only speculating right now, I will try and find empirical evidence to support my claim.
This is my favorite book series and I have cleared out libraries in the fantasy genre. I have seen all of PR’s interviews, read all of his blogs. I have no doubt that he wrote the novelas and TWMF, but I cannot believe that he wrote book 1. I truly believe that there is something here worth digging for, and I will continue to do so possibly at my peril. I don’t think this is a rumor you should throw aside if you respect the story. If not, it’s okay and I respect you anyway.

He was paid by his publisher for book 3 and a follow up trilogy, which he hasnt delivered on. He told his fans he would release a chapter if donation goals were met, he didnt deliver. He blamed book 3's delay on Trumps election, yet Trump has been out of office for 3 years and still no book 3. He hasnt delivered on anything significant since book 2 and all he does is make excuses. At this point I have zero trust in him and I cant see why anyone would still support him. I hope I am wrong but I think kingkiller will be finished the same way wheel of time was.

I know he never intended to scam people but his mental health issues ended up getting in the way of a reasonable relationship. In any other business environment, this would be unacceptable. You can feel for the guy and at the same time expect what he has sold you. This seems like pr for a famous, successful author. My suspicion is that Rothfuss let all the praise go to his head. That praise became a toxic brew when it contacted his mental illness. I think that he wants Doors of Stone to be a rollicking fun time, epic conclusion, WHILE at the same time be a deconstruction of the entire fantasy genre. That is insanely hard to even think about, let alone accomplish. So his goal is way too grandiose and his well crafted prose can’t make up for it.

Perhaps to my mind the most disturbing aspect of this situation is the way 'mental health' is being cited as a way to deflect criticism and gain automatic defenders. Depression and anxiety are serious things which deserve our sympathy and compassion -- which is precisely why we shouldn't accept them as strategic moves to avoid criticism. If Rothfuss truly can't, or won't, complete the obligations he's accepted, he should acknowledge this, return any monetary advances, return the money given to charity, and take his lumps.

@@PabloSuarez97 I find that justification strange. People paid for something. We have tons of public charity issues. Between fraud, misappropriated funds, and extreme ceo budgets, and auctions are some of the highest-earning events for most charities.
Pat is doing real harm by causing increased shade on charities. People are willing to pay WAY over the value of something for a good cause, but there is a reason the thing is offered. They get a lot more donations when something is offered rather than purely out of the goodwill of others hearts.
Maybe that is cynical, but it is just a fact. This makes it pretty unjustifiable IMO to defend Rothfuss for not having taken 5minutes to make a real apology on his blog rather than hiding the only mention at the end of a 2 hour long stream.
5 minutes in the last 2 years would have prevented real damage to charity and have been someone trying to take responsibility for their actions.

@@Fatikis42 I certainly see your point, though it wasn't a direct transaction. People didn't pay for a chapter, or a book. People donated as incentive to get something that still hasn't been delivered. I agree, the apology is deficient to say the least, and it shows a high level of avoidance, but I am an empathetic person and I understand why he has been avoiding the topic. I do not think it is fair to extrapolate to the larger fraudulent charities convo because there has been no indication that neither Heifer international nor Worldbuilders has been engaged in shady business. I do believe the root of the discontent is the bottled-up frustration for inactivity, lack of transparency regarding progress and failure to produce a genuine apology. @Fatikis42 8 месяцев назад +8

@@PabloSuarez97 I think you are confused about how incentives work.
Even donation, you PAY for the incentive. When you buy something on your taxes you have to deduct the value of the object from the amount donated. Because you still BOUGHT the thing. As a donation it was just exempt from the taxes, but you can't claim the painting you bought was valueless also.
Personally, his opinions and reasons don't matter. People all have their reasons. Sometimes people do bad things. Not being a cackling villain doesn't change that nor did I ever imply that strawman.

Despite the Fae sex scene, I thought the Fae Realm was actually a pretty cool part in the story. It was magical and unique, not many stories do that type of Fae legends in fantasy novels. I’ve seen people bash that part in the book. I will admit it was odd as hell. But Felurian literally is love and sex and lures men. That’s her whole persona. So it sort of made sense. I thought the way the Fae place was described was beautiful. I think what he was trying to do was show the main characters first real sexual experience like any human being, but it came off strange. But I agree the way it was written was bizarre. My problem with the Fae stuff, the building up and tales about the Fae in the world is well done, but the Fae realm was way too short. It needed to be longer. It’s like what? Maybe 9 chapters? And the chapters were extremely short like max 11 pages. He did say there is going to be more Fae in book 3 which is pretty cool but I hope it’s not all in the Fae. The character needs to travel a lot.
Also about the chapter charity stream. I truly don’t think he actually wanted to scam people. But it came off that way. I do feel bad for him and pity, but his behavior towards fans about the book is ridiculous and immature. I’m not saying he doesn’t feel pressure. I’m sure he feels a ton of that and I’m sure it’s hard to try and write a book that a lot of people are waiting for, let alone making it amazing and good. It’s certain that it is weighing on him. But at this point I feel like we are down the rabbit hole. It’s just excuse and avoid, and that’s it. It’s sucks but atleast we’ve got 2 great books and a few novellas. I am honestly surprised people haven’t sued him yet for not delivering after 1.25 million dollars were raised. I do have a small glimmer of hope that book 3 will someday arrive but I’ve just stopped excepting.

I'm always conflicted when it comes to this topic. I personally believe that when you pitch a book as part of a broader series that there is a moral obligation to your readers to attempt to finish the series in a timely manner, as long as there are enough readers to financially justify the endeavor and that the number of high profile authors that have not met this obligation makes it harder for new/less popular authors to get audience buy in for a series that is not completed and this has a huge negative impact on people hoping for those initial purchases to help them become full time authors. I understand that real life conflicts/mental health concerns/etc provide a reasonable basis for delay but Rothfuss in particular pitched this as a completed trilogy when NoTW was first published in order to overcome concerns of completion and then went on to negate deadline after deadline.
I get why someone with mental health struggles might find it difficult/impossible to contact and be honest with their publisher/fanbase/media, he also has continued to dig deeper and make promises he knows he can't fulfill, and that pre-deadline, fame Rothfuss set these expectations and yet he continues to back them up with words but not deeds.

Dude, it's just a chapter... just fulfill your good faith promise to your fans. Don't be to much of a perfectionist. Everyone knows things will change in final publication.
Idon't necessarily care about his publisher, it's part of their business model to deal with authors that go through slumps or never deliver. He may owe them something morally and contractually, but keep your word to the fans!

Something that many people don't understand is that with each character you add to a story (each with their own story/subplot), the amount of writing you must do to resolve each plotline is not linier, it is exponential. Here is some good advice for your first novel: ruclips.net/video/c3VRwuh5SRk/видео.html Patrick got in over his head without knowing it and now he is struggling to 1) resolve everything in his trilogy (much of which has changed from his first draft) and 2) he set such high expectations that finishing the trilogy is clearly causing him debilitating anxiety. The same anxiety is happening with George R R Martin, though he seems better able to cope with it. Note that both of them have published other books and worked on other projects while fans await their final book or books in the series. It is far easier to start something than to finish it; especially when finishing it has become incredibly complex in the meantime (due to setting a trap for yourself, the escape from which is mind-numbingly difficult). I say enjoy what we have and imagine the endings yourself; like The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens (his death caused that novel never to be finished; and has led to speculation about the ending since 1870!).

With stuff like this, I don't think I'd be as condemning of his actions if such a massive amount of money was involved in the debacle. And this wasn't money from people with disposable income. This was most likely money from people who work to put food on the table and want to just sit down with a good book.
I understand the issues of mental illness, the weight of fame, the expectations of quality etc. But still, all of that is not his fault, but it still his responsibility. And I'm not even a reader of his work, but the sheer number of times he comes up in literary discussion makes me want to bang my head against the wall. If anyone else did this, they'd be crucified. But Rothfuss? He gets a pass for a lot of people. I think defenders of his need to look down inside themselves and ask why that is.

@@PabloSuarez97Good point, but I will add to that by saying that people were still expecting something else out of that social contract. Sure, people can be happy their money's going to charity, but that knowledge will be soured by the knowledge that they were promised something in addition - something that's been in the pipeline for over a decade at this point, something that Rothfuss made constant promises over - and that additional thing was never given.
Because at that point, why wouldn't they just instead donate straight to the charity if they can't rely on Rothfuss to fulfill his part of the bargain?

  • @hotchipbenj
    @hotchipbenj 2 месяца назад

I really appreciate this take. Rothfuss obviously should not have done the charity thing but we've seen similar levels of vitriol directed at GRRM and Scott Lynch for their stalled series. Rothfuss gave his fanbase a more tangible thing to ascribe their anger to. But why are we angry in the first place? An author doesn't collect payment ahead of time from readers for services to be rendered. Let the publishers and agents worry about that shit. Making readers wait is at their peril. If you don't want to read it when and if it finally comes out, then don't. But everyone probably will end up reading it lol. For my money, it's pretty obvious when an author loses their steam or just "checks out" of a series but the books get published anyway, and that's just as bad (if not worse) as waiting. To your point, nobody reads Sanderson for the prose, but that's not really the point of his work. Other authors really center the mechanical details of their writing and worldbuilding, which is why it takes 3,000 years for them to write a book. I'm personally fine with allowing them that grace. Tolkien wrote in Middle-Earth for 60 years and his entire published works probably amount to fewer words than some fantasy authors have put into a single series in the years since LOTR and the epoch it started.

He's not just sitting in his chair live streaming and stroking his beard. People love to hate on Brandon but I'm glad his star is rising. I do feel like his earlier works were over shadowed by by Patrick and George but Brandon is an author I can support because he WRITES. Well, noone is hindered to write their own version of the third book.
I did. As I always do, if I need wait too long (or am unhappy with the ending of a book. I just rewrite it.) My version of Doors of Stone took me quite a long time, and blocked me from writing my own stories for a long time, but I thought it was worthwhile since I wanted to read it, and after I finished it, I thought I had found the right tone and a perfect and logical ending. Then I let it sit in a file for some time and revisisted it after reading book one and two in a row. I realized my language was wanting, my ending was horribly cheap and I deleted the lot.
I wouldn't be surprised if he did the same. There was a picture of him with a screen that had a document with 1700pages worth of Doors of Stone back in 2013. He or his beta-readers were unhappy with it and thought it wasn't good enough. And he was in a depressed radical mood and pressed the delete button. - And he hasn't found the mood to rewrite it. - Good things take time, and people that play computer games and visit social media don't have enough time for writing. I learned from my own writing-habits: the morning you switch on your router to visit the internet is a lost day for your creativity.
(And by the way... don't ask me about my versions of Winds of Winter&Dreams of Spring... tried everything, went everywhere, killed everyone, crowned everyone, produced some 2000plus pages of fragments of different versions, but they remain unlinked and unfinished, I put it aside and left it there, because I know GRRM will definitively catch up with me.)

    • @MagnaMater2
      @MagnaMater2 7 месяцев назад +1

@@awz079 I warned the ending was cheap:
Kvothe wastes time telling details about the royal succession, and then talks about Ambrose's father trying to be king, and about the court intrigues, how a princess disappeared at the university, Bast works out it's Auri.
Kvothe decides he has to mention how he fell from Auri's grace forever, by taking Debbie along through the Underthing, for breaking through the Doors of Stone and getting her into worst of troubles, but gets interrupted, just as he is about to tell what we all want to hear.
Some magical entity, I didn't specify if it were some Fay-monster, that Bast thinks he recognized that is at the gate, or the Chandrian attack the inn, though the blue fire sort of gives it away, the Chandrian are looking for Kvothe to fill their number.
The last thing the Chronicler saw, was Kvothe jumping up the bar, like a flaming demon, grabbing Folly to tackle some walking Shadow that tries to get him and then the lights go out and the Chronicler is knocked out by some magical explosion, he thinks he heard the name of the wind.
The next chapter resumes with a hilarious and happy Bast pulling the Chronicler from the smoking debries of the inn. All he says is, that it worked, and his Reshi is back, and then he disappeares right through the scorched waystone that is the only thing left standing behind the ruin. Leaving the Chronicler with the stunned and surviving villagers behind.
The next day an army approaches the village, and Scarpie is there and takes the Chronicler to see and report to the Penitent King, Auri's Uncle, that judged by his apporach to the village's children turns out to be the Tarbean children-nursing monk.
The Chronicler tells Scarpy that he found him, but he was gone again, and Scarpy makes some quip, he never saw a man running that dramatically from his planned wedding (with Auri), like that Lackless-boy.
The Chronicler says there was way more to this story, and goes back to the waystone with Scarpy, trying to find any traces of what happened, and above all: if his notes survived.
There are - the nice - university professors, researching the ruins, and they found Kvothe's thrice locked chest. It's broken and empty, but for a broken lute; other things they are looking for, are gone.
Elodin who is not inclined to dirty his hands, and leaves the sifting through the ashes to his colleagues, is sitting on the Waystone and reading the Chronicler's notes, from his scorched bag, handing them back to him, the Chronicler saying Kvothe had no chance to finish his story, and they don't know what really happened.
Elodin heavily hints they are the Amyr and know perfectly well what happened, but tells the Chronicler his book needs a proper ending. Something about the silence over the ruins that lingered, after the man who refused to die, had left.
You see: rather cheap. Answering close to nothing.
(Edit: During the discussion of the royal succession an the court intrigues it is mentioned as a known fact, that Kvothe killed Ambrose, and though he could prevent from being executed by the iron law, revealing the plots of Ambrose and his family, that all knew he was the Lackless-heir, before he knew himself, his good left hand had been chopped off for murdering Ambrose, the healers of the university managed to sew his hand back on, he can move it, but feels nothing any more, and doesn't like to play with a deaf hand, Dennas curse had worked, and that he trying to get to know what Denna was doing, in between the times he met her, had gathered a worse curse upon him, that was Silence.
Worse for his human life was, that his friends, especially Sim turned his back on him, for him first falling for Ambrose's fake leads making him suspecting them for fooling him and being the real agents behind the royal murders, like those of Alveron and his aunt, he sort of found Sim there, redhanded, but there is also Denna, that had run from her wedding with Ambrose, and accuses him of causing the murders by hindering her of preventing them. But he is no longer sure if Denna wasn't in that intrigue, the Chandrian wanted something of her, that was opening the Doors of Stone, to cause an even worse disaster.)

That album you want? The book you're looking for? You aren't owed that by anyone. Those finished projects also aren't required to meet whatever expectation you have if the creator goes in a direction you wanted vs what they wanted.
