Regarding the ending, it's your frame rate. You have your frame rate unlocked which causes the game to go haywire. It happens with the other 3d games too.

My first console was a PS1. Had both fat and the PSOne slim edition. Some games have had bad graphics but never to this extent such as in this video. Take a look at 007 world is not enough from ps1, It was a game that really forced the ps1 hardware but looks quite good for that era.
