  • Success at Deer camp in Michigan's Upper Peninsula
    #deerhunting #MichiganHunting #deerseason
It was a snowy deer camp right from the beginning. But one of our better camps to date. We road the RZR back to camp and set up. Hunting is always different from year to year in the UP. We are surrounded by thousands of acres of logging property with no regular food source to attract the deer. So the best opportunities are long shooting lanes and deer bait. Most of the time the bait don't work but we were able to get lucky.
They need to make a how to hunt deer in the U.P. video since it's so much different than anywhere else. With thousands of acres of wooded land there is no particular place the deer like to settle. I used my Ruger 7x57 with a simmons 3x9x50 scope which turned out to be horrible because for some reason my scope won't focus. So in a way I'm glad I didn't get a chance to take a deer
What is the deer camp definition Well for us it's a place to escape and pretend to hunt. We don't have deer camp rules other than you don't pea in the front yard. We have two deer camp cabins but the one is sinking in the swamp and we use it for storage. We do have deer camp traditions and new deer camp ideas for future campers. WE don't really have any funny deer camp rules but our deer camp michigan based is tons of fun. We don't necessarily have a deer camp song but anything by the yoopers will do.
White tail deer hunting is like now other when it comes to the upper peninsula of Michigan. The winters are cold in the upper peninsula. For many people Northern michigan means different things. Because the landscape in michigan fluctuates so much. You have the western lake shore which is more sandy and then you have the eastern lakes shore which is more of a rocky landscape. The further you head north even in the lower peninsula of michigan the landscape becomes more wooded.
THen you have the upper peninsula with cliffs, rivers lakes with acres and acres of woods and swamp. Our upper peninsula deer camp is right in the middle of the woods and the swamp. A northern michigan or upper peninsula swamp is much different than one in the lower peninsula of michigan. It's much thicker much wetter and way harder to walk. Northern Michigan hunting is great though. Even if you don't see deer you have a chance to see the beauty of the upper peninsula. Iron Mountain Michigan is the closest city to our camp at least the closest one with more than a 1000 people living there.
If we ever need anything we usually need to drive a while to get to iron mountain but it does pay off. Upper peninsula deer huntings isn't like the lower peninsula. I've hunted both areas for over 10 years now. The bucks here have smaller racks but bigger bodies. This Michigan deer camp is also like no other. We're the only private property within hundreds of thousands of logging company land. Being land locked we have to travel 5 miles through the woods just to get to our camp. Our camp doesn't have any electricity or running water. We get water from a natural spring. Not to drink but mainly to wash dishes and our hands. Although I would love to see it get tested.
Michigan deer camp can be rough between the cold weather and having no amenities you really are roughing it in the wild. When I'm at our upper peninsula deer camp I don't consider myself a big buck hunter. I'm more of an observationist, taking in everything the Michigan Upper Peninsula has to offer. The upper peninsula deeer aren't like the deer in the lower peninsula. They usually have really thick coats small dark racks that seem to be thicker than the bucks from the lower peninsula. Northern Michigan deer hunting can be exciting but it is also a waiting game.

Erica Thompson oh okay I’d offer to come to teach them what I know but I’m not sure what the rules are going to be for hunting over state lines this hunting season. We might be able to make something work though

Are most UP camps on private land? Does the timber company not allow access for hunting during hunting season?

Been a long time since I've had the pleasure of hunting in the UP. Spent my time around the AF base and Gwinn while stationed up there. Departed after my last hunting trip in 1991. I sure miss it. Not sure I'd want to deal with the cold and snow now though, (just a few years older).
    Congrats on the deer!

Larry, You will be in good deer hunting area around Grand Haven. I live in Nunica and see many deer on my trail cameras. This video was filmed in the U.P. which is a lot more remote than the area around Grand Haven.

I have a cabin north west of you, north of Iron river. Agree the deer are nowhere near what they used to be. I believe between wolves and lack of clear cutting, there will be fewer deer.

Looks like fun times! Man, you can forget those food plots and baiting. If you guys could take a weekend in the spring, go in and make some bedding areas via doing some hinge cutting, you'd see more deer than you would be able to fathom. You're not only making thick bedding area, but the whitetails diet is 70% woods browse (green newly sprouted branches). You're putting that food on the ground where they can reach it. The UP has a lot of awesome woods without too much bedding or accessible food. When you properly hinge cut, the tree stays alive for years producing food that they can access. It's those thick pockets in the woods that holds the deer. During hunting season, they need that to give them a false sense of security.
