- Nicko McBrain, drummer for Iron Maiden, jams with the BB King's Blues Club's House Band at The Gater 98.7 FM's 12 Guitars of Christmas Party. They played a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and Iron Maiden's "The Trooper" Nicko was awesome. He posed for pictures with fans and signed autographs too. The Gater ROCKS!!!

What a lot of people forget is that Nicko was one of the top session drummers in London during the 70s
Absolutely true. That’s how he actually started. When Iron Maiden hired him, he was already well known.
Now that I didn't know. I thought he was Maiden's roadie and took over after they kicked Burr out for getting drunk on stage.
@@aarthoor Burr was fired after the tour. They contacted Nicko, who used to play with the French band Trust. They supported Maiden during The Beast on the Road.
Burr replaced Nicko in Trust.
@@TheEternalWayfarer Good lord, totally different to the story I heard! I read that Burr left the tour to see organise his Dads funeral and they used Nicko (who I thought was the roadie) and decided they prefered him. Oh well. both excellent drummers in their own way I always thought.
@@aarthoor It's not clear what happened. Some say he left the band due to the death of his father, some say they fired him because he used to drink too much.
Very nice. I like to see musicians play different styles of music. You get to see mutual respect from Nicko and the group! He's just having fun!

This is basically Nicko's roots. He took up the job in Maiden because it was an easy gig for him. And then proceeded to take heavy metal drumming to a completely new level.
The man is happy when he plays drums. :3 You cna see thet. :D And that's what drummer is all about. To be happy when he plays his instrument no matter how godd or bad drummer is. :D But just to say Mcbrain is my idol :3

The trooper with an organ horn section is something that sounds suprisingly natural. I'd love to hear more maiden songs arranged this way.

The guitars and bass had a hard time keeping up with Nicko's tempo as demonstrated by that weak interpretation of the main guitar lead riff, lol

Nicko said in an interview that he loves funk music. So if he's not touring with maiden he can play in a funk band.
Bravo to the band playing The Trooper, a really cool version too. Funk meets Metal awesome.

I love that he's never changed. You watch him with Pat Travers around '77 and he was smiling and singing away to his own drums way back then. If/when (I know, sad to think) he has to quit Maiden or they just pack it in, he will be drawn back to funk without a doubt and will be a very sought after musician!
I loved those early PT albums. Hard rock infused with jazzy, funky breaks. Nicko was in his element; that band was tight.

What I like best about Nicko is the fact that he is always smiling when he is playing. It seems like no matter what he is having a great time on stage.

There are not a lot of metal/hard rock drummers who have as much ease as Nicko playing all sorts of genres. Before the huge success with Maiden he was a sought-after session drummer. His role with Pat Travers really shaped his musical approach and style. Amazing drummer who probably has the fastest right foot in history! Plus, he always looks maximum happy behind the kit.

I mean, as a guitar player, if Adrian Smith would show up for a song with my band, I would be there playing along with him. But as a drummer, you can't just experience that. All you can do is sit back and watch.
