    I have this set, along with a larger set of Sennelier. The lid on this box does not lie flat because it is meant to hold/prop up a watercolor postcard for painting on. I don't often use it that way, but it does technically work if you're into that. It does confuse me that they very clearly meant this set for travel with the postcard size paintings and all, but as you mentioned, it does not fasten closed well enough. I also found the color selection to be slightly strange, but it's like that in all Sennelier sets. They claim it's because they are aiming for a similar color selection to the French impressionists. I still swapped out a couple of the colors. But even though the color selections seem a bit odd, I love Sennelier for its luminous glazing abilities.

      heytogrey oh wow! I would have never figured that out on my own. I just tried it and you're totally right. What a unique design, and I can appreciate it a lot more now. Thanks for sharing! I can also definitely appreciate that there is no black or white, so at least there's that!

    Holy crap, look at that glazing! So beautiful.
    Need to get my hands on Sennelier. Tried it before, along with many other brands, and it's one of my absolute favorites.
    Currently in love with Sennelier & Schmincke, and really big on a few colors by Daniel Smith. These 3 are definitely my top brands.
    Man, I want Sennelier paints so bad, ugh! Alas.

    I'm pretty sure the holes in the bottom are for air circulation to prevent mold, since they have honey. But I could be wrong :) Another great job Denise

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад +1

      Katherine Sullivan I thought so too but the lid definitely isn't air tight so I don't think there'd be an issue there. I did find it useful to pry the pans out though when they first arrived since they were jammed in there!

      i think they are draining pipes for the water, so that it doesn't get stuck at the bottom of it :)

      @@alisonb3850 I know it's been 4 years but it's very very important to tell a stranger on the Internet that they're wrong :P I have honey with liofilized raspberry and it didn't grow mold for over a year, but I've had honey with I believe ginger (maybe also lemon), and maybe there was not enough honey there (it had weird consistency, it could've been like 60-70% honey? or maybe much less, though it was pretty sweet, along a strong ginger taste), but it did grow mold in around just two-three weeks or so of standing in our kitchen outside of the fridge. We had to throw away the whole jar :/
      So, honey might not grow mold, but a mixture might or might not, probably depending on other things.
      (Tasty protip, to repent answering so laye: Polish-style gingerbread cookies dough (with high honey content) is supposed to ferment in a cold place for months (1-2) before Christmas, and then after baking (but without decorating, I think) they can stay in closed containers for another few months. And they're amazing, those are my favourite cookies. I can share a good recipe...)

I really like the palette box i got it because it was so different from most, i am a bit of a palette horder, even though mine was different paints as it was purchased from ebay. I've been searching for review of this watercolor set and it's soo hard, not many people do review on this set ;; I was about to buy this, but bcs of lack of review, I decided to buy different brand. After watching the video, I think i'm gonna buy a smaller set instead or just buy few individual colors :') Thank you for the great video (and the color comparison!!!!) I hope u have a good day ;)

      Hi Kristal! One of the reasons I leaned towards this on as well was it's rarity on the review scene. I'm sorry it didn't get to you in time! I'm glad you liked the video though and happy painting with your new set!

    Warm and cool trios. Yellow ochre. Burnt umber. Sap green. Hookers green/a bold green. Purple. Pink/magenta. Payne’s grey (darker version) or black. Maybe turquoise or cerulean. Maybe Prussian blue and a bright bold red for floral painting. Those are my ideal colors. So a 16 color palette. Maybe am opaque white for error correcting, and a burnt sienna/skin tone for skin. 18 colors. Done. My ideal palette.

    I think it's adorable and convenient enough. I love Sennelier watercolor just as M. Graham because they are made with honey and remain soft. Hate going back to any other brand!

    I just picked up the Sennelier Sample Pack of 5 10ml tubes for all of $12.99. I have to admit that I am underwhelmed. I think I will use them for glazing in botanical painting but I prefer the M.Graham, QOR, and Daniel Smith as they are dependably lightfast, rich, and vibrant and the pigment info is readily available. They have spoiled me for other brands. Sennelier is on sale at Dick Blicks and are the cheapest professional watercolors that I have seen. Thanks for your videos, I learn something new with each one.

    At first I didn't like Sennelier's Alizarin Crimson at all. It looked too brown compared to Winsor & Newton or M. Graham, which are more rich cool red, but over time I'm really learning to appreciate it. Sennelier paints are my first love for watercolor.

    • @InLiquidColor

      It's funny that I'd have probably loved it from the start if they'd given it a different name. I have their Alizarin Crimson Lake now, which is a more conventional Alizarin Crimson. And Sennelier is certainly not the only brand that does its own thing in color names. Great video! Thanks.

      You can get a tube version of this set or just refill the pans from a tube ( like most artists do ). I had this set but the mixing tray is just far too small to be practical.

  • @DivineGypsy
    @DivineGypsy 6 лет назад +1

    It’s kind of a spunky tray set up, I don’t need 5 reds either even though i am mainly a primary color painter. I don’t think the colors are bad, it would be cool if you had a walkthrough of your swatch binder 😊

  • @ThatLazyStray
    @ThatLazyStray 5 лет назад +1

    i feel like sennelier missed a trick putting holes in the bottom of the container. They could have easily turned that into extra mixing space when you remove the paint tray, and in my opinion would have made this set much more desirable.

    Sennelier ultramarine deep has less violet bias than some PB29s so I can mix really nice greens with lemon yellow or a nickel azo, something I cannot do well with say Winsor Newton French Ultramarine, as regardless what yellow you use, the greens always grey out too much. It is also more natural for sky colours too I find so generally making this a far more versatile colour for me as a landscape painter. Incidentally Sennelier do a French ultramarine but inexplicably add PV19 to it .??

    I knew the moment I saw that purple that something was odd: my color selection when I bought this set was different than yours!! My set had Cobalt Violet Deep Hue instead of Dioxazine Purple; Phthalo Green Deep instead of Forest Green and Transparent Brown instead of Warm Sepia! How weird that they would switch these out and not address the issue of the 4.5 red in this set XD I love your modifications (that chinese orange is lovely and incidentally, I got the more recent version of the same color when I modded my 14 set). I thought for sure that you would remove that super bright green, so now I'm even more curious to see where you'll take this one!
    Looking forward to the next video! Take care! ♥

      Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault Oh that is odd!! I have watches your review two or three times but didn't look at them side by side for the color changes. And that green! Haha I know. It took a lot for me to leave it there. I do have some Sennelier sap green that Karia sent me but it's in a pan that doesn't fit here. If I get really desperate I can cut it out or something and try to fit it in here. But, I thought to myself, "Denise give it a try" haha.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад +1

      I think they just have to be labeled as such. You can still acquire cobalts... pretty sure anyway haha. But perhaps there are two sets that they have depending on certain counties? No idea. I did check though at the dioxazine is rated as a three for lightfastness, yikes!

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt 7 лет назад +2

      In what kind of pan is the sap green that Karia sent you?

  • @saigono4700
    @saigono4700 7 лет назад +2

    I have this set. It contains only one cool yellow, four reds, two multi-pigmented greens etc
    The French Vermilion PR242 is not lightfast. After six months of sunlight exposure, that color faded badly. A big disappointment since it is a beautiful red orange.
    Quinacridone Red PR209 has a slight loss in intensity.
    Dioxazine Violet PV23 has not faded at all! Same for the rest.
    I notice that the Chinese Orange in the video is an older version (may be prior to 2010). The current one is PY150+PBr23+PR209. The one with quinacridone gold is much better. It has only two pigments. The one with three pigments is duller.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад

      That's odd that your PR242 faded, especially when PV23 didn't. Sennelier's dioxazine has a bad lightfastness rating while vermillion is rated excellent. And yes, I've mentioned many times in many videos that this is the older formula of the Chinese Orange that a viewer sent me. I'm using it sparingly to hold on to that PO49 :)

    • @saigono4700
      @saigono4700 7 лет назад

      I like testing all my watercolors. Sometimes, a pigment can have a bad lightfastness rating but the whole formula makes it more lightfast. Same goes for a lightfast pigment that can turn fugitive because the whole formula is not optimized.
      I also test all my watercolor pencils. That's a whole different story. Some colors will be less lightfast when water is added. Some will be more lightfast when water is added. That's crazy! The printed ratings are only very approximate.

    Sennelier paint have less pigment than other "professional paint". also Sennelier I believe make Jackson's own brand watercolour paint. take for instance Hookers Green PY83 PG36 Jackson and Sennelier are the only brands (out of 16 brands I check) to use this combination . All the other pigment combination for a paint colours match between Jacksons and Sennelier. Tube size is 21 ml and they both use honey and the same type of gum.
    When I was checking the makeup of pigment for Hookers Green. I found American Journey and Da Vinci both used PG7,PY42. Turner and and Winsor Newton both used PG36, PY110 all the other brands used a different pigment combination. That is accept for Sennelier and Jackson which used PY83,PG36. Concluding does Da Vinci make American Journey?

    • @2lmdi
      @2lmdi 6 лет назад +1

      Sennelier does not contain "less pigment" to binder (honey) ratio than other artist quality paints. It is a finer grind and that's what may make it appear so to you.

    How long do you let your swatches dry before adding the glazing layer?

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 лет назад +1

      It depends on the weather, paper, and brand of paint. Until they're dry! Feel the paint with the back of your hand (not your finger tips because of oils). If the paper is still cool, it is not dry. Wait for the paper to be completely dry and neutral in temperature.

    This was thorough, and it does cover all things one would want to see when looking up an item. Also your swatches are just lovely and a great demonstration.
    That said, I find it difficult to accept the opinions of a review when nearly every detail of an item is presented as a nuisance.
    Ignoring what appears to be wonderful glazing? quick response time? well it sadly nullifies objective points that might even be legitimate. Because how can one make sense of it all when everything, even the good, is presented as either a humdrum observation or complaint?
    Nearly all that one has an issue with, are features that others, such as myself, would love, praise, or at least have no problem with.
    As for throwing this expensive set into a purse, so to be jostled around, I would not recommend. However, consider a more travel fast(as in secure) bag to organize your items. For myself, when I travel with art supplies, I use a fitted laptop backpack, with an assortment of travel compartments that hold a multitude of things neatly and tightly. This set would easily find a place in one of it's pockets.
    I have never been to this channel before, I was brought here because of researching this product. Where this review did give some insight, and I'll repeat, your swatches are just lovely and a great demonstration, the review left me confused.
    So, I will have to hunt down more reviews in attempt to get a fairer assessment of product that I think may deserve more praise?
