  • Ack! Forgive me. My audio flubbed again and I had to record it all over! Here we take a look at the coveted Schmincke watercolors from Germany. These paints are poured in pans four times for the maximum amount of pigment delivered within a pan. In this video we are going to do some direct comparison between the Schmincke and other brands of paints. There will be a Part 2 video in which we get to try them out in an actual painting.
    If you are interested in purchasing Schmincke, please use my Amazon links below to support my RUclips channel :) Have you used Schmincke watercolors or have your own way of comparing paints at home? Tell me about them in the comments below!

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the products you review. You have a wonderful unique style! Please, Don't change a thing! I love how you show your comparison swatches for the products you do a review on. You've created an awsome tequnique teaching, helping us learn more about the products, processes used to create them, and so much more valuable information. Love that you are using a variety of color swatches for comparisons of each color that represents each companies products, being able to learn the differences between the products, so we too can compare visually, along with pigment information identifying the differences, allowing us to see the results you've acquired. This is so helpful along with all the information you provide for each color name, and the pigments each company uses along with other names used for thr same color, is a very enjoyable learning experience. You are very enjoyable to watch! Thank you!👍💗

    This style of review is incredibly helpful. Seeing the swatches compared to the same (or similar) pigments from other companies gives a really great idea of what sorts of applications each color excels at. I've been watching your reviews and making a mental list of a mixed set (different brands) based on my personal quirks.

    The modern cadmiums don't really have cadmium anymore. Only if you have paints from mid 90s and before is when you have to really "worry" about it. I say "worry" because cadmium dosent really penetrate the skin; they way that it affects the body is through the lungs so in odor/fumes and/or smoke. So unless you are smoking or sniffing vintage yellows, reds and oranges then you should be good. By the way, sorry if this reads as condescending or meanish, but I'm just tyring to make light of the concern; I hear so many people carrying over the older concerns about things that are not as they were anymore.

    • @Kyomiibrown
      @Kyomiibrown 7 лет назад +8

      aygo - Cadmium is still very much used in paints - a couple of tonnes or so a year as a rough estimate, and many cadmium paints do use the "real" cadmium (unless it states "hue."). There was going to be a ban in Europe but as far as I am aware that ban did not go through.

      Also i belive Denise is concerned about it getting into the waterways and effecting animals

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 4 года назад

      Who even told you that? Of course there are still real cad paints. There are many alternatives today, like cadmium hues, but in artist grade paints cadmium is still very common.

    Appreciate the brand comparison for each color. I just got the same but in tube form. Your video helps me too see what they represent stacking against the same or similar colors from other reputable brands. Now I know I bought the right starter set for color blending and layering (don’t care much for vibrancy). I hope I can blend a sophisticated yellowish olive green from this set because it’s my fave green hue.

    The entire set is clearly geared towards mixing. I'd be curious to see you mix up the brown you desired and then compared the result to DS and MG.

    Just a little tip: Those metal tray inserts have two parts -- a stationary side (toward the middle) and the bendytab part (toward the edge). If you fold the tabs inward while the tray is empty, you'll get a better hold. You just lean the pan in on the stationary side, then push down to "click" it into place on the bendytab side. There'll be a pretty audible/feel-able "click" when it goes in. It kind of feels like putting a battery into a device, actually. :)
    You'll get a much stronger hold than if you put the pan in first and *then* try to bend the bendytabs. Hope that helps!

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад +1

      Elli M Yep, I tried both ways :) The clicking way with this set caused the pan to sit at an angle so what you're probably noticing is me playing around with the angle.

    While the video did run a bit long, I appreciated seeing the swatch card comparison. I have a degree in Painting and Drawing, but all of my painting classes focused on oils, so I"m most familiar with them, but have been learning watercolor on my own. Since I'm not very familiar with the different makes of watercolor paint, I've been looking at various reviews to help me decide on a set of artist grade paints. I enjoyed seeing how a range of brands treated the same pigment, and how each version performed in comparison with the rest. It was very informative for someone like me to be able to see these differences when researching paint brands, so I'd definitely recommend using this method. I think even people more experienced than I am will be able to glean something from videos like these if they are unfamiliar with certain brands of paint. Also, I do have a special appreciation for the color payoff of cadmium paints, and they've made a consistent appearance in my oil palettes. However, even I wonder at times if I want to bother with them anymore, especially in watercolor.

    Just found your review as I've bought a large set of the Schmincke...I'm trying to really learn about the pigments and note them between sets as I now have quite a few makes. I agree with everything you've said, and initially I was a bit disappointed in some of their colours compared with other makes. However over the year I had a small set I found myself wanting to return to it again and again. I also love sennelier, but they are quite different and I feel can lack delicacy. I adore Daniel Smith...but v expensive in my country and I'm gradually building them up. I have other brands but I'd say those are my top three. I guess it depends what you most like to paint as different makes excel in different ways. Some of the most translucent even washes I've achieved with Daler Rowney, and I have a wonderful floral set from them. I think Schmincke have more vibrant colours but have that same refined effect.Thank you for an informative video and I especially enjoyed the comparison section.P.S....the new transparent ochre and some of their new colours might make good replacements for the ones you were disappointed in.

      Welcome to our little community Suzi! Thanks for all the additions to the discussion. I've heard people say "there's not much difference across artist grade paints" and definitely disagree. Like you said, they all have different advantages! I have another video with the new swatch card from Schmincke taking a look at those newer colors. I'm really enjoying my expanded set with the samples they sent!

    Hi there. I just watching In Liquid Color......I am enjoying your products reviews. I was wondering about purchasing Schminke Watercolors - and look forward to watching part two. I have full HUGE sets of Schminke very soft pastels, which I love!!! I am going to see if some of their watercolors are similar to their fine professional pastels.
    I cannot afford Daniel Smith anything at the moment - lol. I see you use their products. If you are aware of a company selling a medium/small kit of theirs that is affordable - please let us know. The scientist in me wants to experiment - smile - comparing their quality with other brands.
    As a scientist I truly liked your comparing the actual pigment colors of various brands! Please keep that up.
    Something else I would like to mention as I have returned to college for wildlife science and ecology PhD - I appreciate your brush reviews mentioning fibers/hairs, AND your wildlife art. You appear to be an educated consumer/artist and appreciate our planet. I am glad.
    So, I have subscribed to your channel, and will continue watching your videos with joy. Smiles!
    Best and kind regards,
    L

    This was an in-depth review and much appreciated! Too bad about the audio -- that has to be very frustrating, but you did a great job with the voice-over. Your comparisons across brands was a great idea. I may have to make me some of them little cards! :) I don't like the black being in almost every set either, but one day I decided play around with only the black paint. Ended up really enjoying it; shape, texture, and value were the stars rather than color. There's freedom in limitation.

    Another stupendous review but you will not get me to purchase schmincke paints! I am desireous for some of their pastel sticks! But I am holding back because I did relent and got some sennelier pastels! They were used so I could afford a small set! Wonderful video and I appreciate how hard you work to give us all of this information! Hoping that you’re doing well and enjoy your day! Schminckes Permanent Carmine is the reddest of pv19s since it wasn’t Quinacridone Rose, it was Quinacridone Carmine , ruby red is true Quinacridone Rose.

    Thanks for a great review! I bought a 48-pan set of Schmincke paints a few months ago with much anticipation and was very disappointed. The tinting strength on most of the colors was decidedly weaker than my Sennelier, Daniel Smith, and M. Graham paints. The paints are also quite flat looking. Some people will prefer them because the colors are very smooth and ungranulating, but I love granulation so Schmincke fails on that score for me too. I also thought there were too many very similar greeny blues in the set. I understand that there is a great fan market for these paints and I hope that I come to appreciate Schmincke's qualities in time. I got a good price on them from Jackson's UK. I love Schmincke's singularly awesome Translucent Orange though, and this one color is among my favorite, essential paints.

      Thanks for sharing Lori! I am excited to actually paint with them. I've been quite busy, as I'm at a craft faire this weekend and have lots of commissions, but I'm going to try to get a painting done in time for this upcoming week's video. I hear they're great for subtle colors, so as a fan of deep color, I may be agreeing with you! To each their own :)

      I have a question. Isn't it tough to compare pan colors to tube colors? Wouldn't tube colors like Daniel Smith, M Graham, etc., have a more vibrant tone than a pan would?

    • @lorijones9579
      @lorijones9579 7 лет назад +2

      It's hard to say, because some brands like Daniel Smith and M. Graham don't offer their paint in pans, and I only have the one tube of Schmincke. I think Sennelier and Winsor & Newton pan paints are very comparable to their tube paints, though it is easier to get that strong color out of paint fresh from a tube. Schmincke makes a big selling point out of their paint formula being identical in their pans and tubes. It's been a few months since I wrote my review here of Schmincke though and I truly am learning to appreciate their paint more over time. I don't think it will ever be my favorite, but I see it's virtues more now than before. We all respond to paints in our own way, but there's very little bad to be said of any of the artist quality brands. They are all fantastic in their own ways. It's good to have biases and favorites, because nobody can afford to buy all of them.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад +1

      Onyx Dragon I dry all of my paints in pans regardless as I do not like using wet watercolors. I think a lot of people perceive fresh tube paint as more vibrant simply because they're using so much more of it. The only paint I've heard of being less vibrant when dried out is QoR but I have not seen that myself. I will be doing a review on them next month though and will test that out myself.
      Lori, I agree that over time I have really come to appreciate schmincke's silky texture and soft color. There is a part 2 to this video that I did around the same time, but I also use them in my two hour real time video of a giraffe I did on my Patreon last month, and I'm smitten with that painting!

    You very likely can put paints down the middle, you'll just have to go length-wise. Also, you can often also fit 13 pans in the normal pan areas, just push all of them close and tight. The Winsor & Newton metal pan set is basically the same, mine came with 24 pans. I now have 33 half pans in my tin with room to add a few more.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад

      I did try them lengthwise and the ones I have at least did not fit. Maybe a smaller one like a winsor and newton pan would, but they run small compared to other pans :) There is room for a 13th pan in the row.

    • @joannegrrl
      @joannegrrl 7 лет назад

      Yes, they are a touch smaller. I did manage to fit some larger ones down the middle of my case, but it did take some adjusting (and blu-tack) to secure them, but it's helped by the sides being lined with the W&N pans giving some extra room in the middle.

    I'm curious about the pigment number system. I have seen PY, PO etc numbers on some but not all brands of paint. Many brands seem to have their own numbering systems. It's confusing

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 лет назад

      The pigment numbers are consistent across every brand, though some of the lower end brands do not provide that information. I never pay any attention to the numbers that individual companies give their paints as that is not useful information for me. For example, PG7 is "Pigment Green 7" and it is the pigment used to make phthalo green. Some brands deviate in their formulas or give this pigment different names (such as "Viridian Hue"), which is why it would be important to look at their composition. Hope that helps!

      Hi skelatori, I got their anniversary edition this year and it's set out a bit differently...instead of a brush I could definitively fit extra half pans along the bottom as I'd treated myself to some of their new colours as well. Hope this helps. The best tin for cramming in paints was the W & N....especially the older ones from the 90s....the gap was larger between the sections. You may find one second hand or kicking around in an out of the way art shop.

    Lovely review - Schmincke are my go-to watercolours because they're the most widely available where I live. As I don't much like those pre-filled palette selections, I almost exclusively use a customised palette.
    Compared to Daniel Smith Schmincke are definitely less vibrant when used al prima, especially in their pan version, but they do give splendid results with layering techniques. They also tend to look more natural and are therefore very well suited for portraiture and nature painting.
    You might be interested in Schmincke's downloadable list of pigments. They provide in-depth information for each colour, so you can decide which ones to choose to fill up your lovely new box. ;) www.schmincke.de/fileadmin/downloads/pdf/Broschueren_2015/HORADAM_AQUARELL_D_GB_150922_web.pdf
