  • When I first started working with Faisal, he couldn't go very high - but in this recent lesson, I show him how he can go high in ajam, and he pulls it off nicely mashaAllah. When I ask him what changed, he mentions how before he used to feel awkward going high, but our way of teaching maqamat (via patterns and structure) made it easier for him, plus of course getting in the practice while working with me.
If you're struggling to recite with a tune, learning the structure of a maqam will help immensely. To learn with me, check out our upcoming Overnight Qari Experience: www.OvernightQari.com

    MaShaAllah
Assalamu Alaikum brother, I have a question regarding imitating different Qaris.
I really like Shaykh Maher al Muaqily's recitation. I can imitate his Fatiha, but only because I've listened to it so many times. I know that I Alhamdulillah have the voice to imitate him, it just comes down to the melody. I know it's all about listening, however, whenever I listen to him I'm like "I have no idea what I listened to" in the sense of the melody. This is not the case for other reciters.
What pieces of advice would you give me to better listen and take in the melody and then put it back out?
May Allah SWT bless you. Ameen

good question, thanks for asking. When you're listening to any specific reciter, you're hearing their expression of a particular maqam. So in this case you're listening to Sh. Maher's way of doing bayati. Some ppl can ignore the bayati part and just hear Sh. Maher's expression or his tune. But often it's helpful to have a sense of "hey this is what bayati actually sounds like as a pattern on its own" and then from there you can make better sense of what Sh. Maher is doing.
So that's one way to go about it - start with learning bayati. Or taking my OQ course which will show you more generally how maqamat works as a system.
the other way - if you just want to imitate sh. Maher and no one else - is just to immerse yourself a lot more in his recitations. Just like you got Fatiha covered, you can pick another surah and do the same thing (listen & repeat), and then move to the next. Eventually you'll get it .. this is of course assuming that you're getting it right with the Fatiha and each surah thereafter.
one thing you can try - listen to an ayah that he recites, and then hum back the pattern/melody without reading the ayah. So you're just focusing in on the tune. Hope this helps!
