Also why the fuck would you cast Vince Vaughn for a serious movie. Is there something I am missing? I mean yeah Wes Anderson casted comedy actors Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson for his movies but the thing is Wes Anderson is a good director.
+S O U R P A T C H Yamaha PSR-3 the reason why Vince Vaughn was in this film is because it was during the period in his career in which he wanted to be taken seriously as an actor, and credit where credit is due I've seen films he's in where you can take him seriously, but here he doesn't even look like he knows what's going on, and just wanted to get it over with.

Some killers do actually stop themselves. Not because they want to of course, and rarely do they stop permanently. But many do stop for fear of getting caught or wanting to let the heat die down first.
I remember watching this movie when I was a little kid and I would remember random parts of it and never know where they were from. This review actually helped me solve something that has bothered me for close to 16 years.
@@215jmo Yeah. Didn't watch it for years because I thought it was just a rip-off of "300" (didn't know of Tarsem at the time), but it was pretty good, not at all like 300.
There's a good reason this movie has the look of an extended music video or commercial-- because Tarsem CAME from a background of directing music videos and commercials. His most notable work, of course, was the video for R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion", which earned him a LOT of acclaim. He won an MTV VMA for Best Video of the Year in 1991. The Cell was his first attempt at a feature film-- and it shows. Don't get me wrong, there are successful movie directors who have cut their teeth doing music videos-- David Fincher and Spike Jonze, for example. One of the advantages of coming from that background is that it often affords an aspiring director with the opportunity to quickly develop a strong and unique visual style, without having to compromise it quite as much as if they were directing feature films. Music videos offer a lot of potential for experimentation, and established music video directors frequently find themselves in demand BECAUSE they have a certain style. But of course, a movie is a completely different beast from a music video-- it has considerations aside from cinematography and visual effects. The directors who succeed in making the transition are the ones who understand they are going to have to leave their comfort zone and focus much more intently on developing their storytelling skills. Music videos can have plots, but they aren't essential; and even when a music video does have a plot, it's usually not extremely fleshed out because the medium is so short and prioritizes looking good over everything else. It's absolutely about style over substance. So is it really a surprise that Tarsem's first movie is basically an extension of all his strengths from directing videos, while its weaknesses-- the writing, the pacing, the questionable casting-- are all the things that don't really matter as much in music videos? I'm not defending this movie; there are definitely problems with it. I'm just saying, it is what it is. If I hypothetically wasn't at all familiar with Tarsem, and you showed me the video for "Losing My Religion", and then you told me the same guy had made a full-length horror/suspense movie about going into a serial killer's mind... this is pretty much exactly how I'd figure it would've turned out. It's not a masterpiece of storytelling by any stretch of the imagination, but at least it does have some rather compelling visuals.
This movie while pretentious was ground breaking with its cinematography and visuals. You just have to appreciate there was nothing like it at the time.
Don't question the movie, or else you'll have the director jumping around all night outside your house yelling: "Ask me what it means, ask me what it means!"
It's the killers dog, that he uses to lure women close to him. The psychologists think that since the dog is the only living creature they know of that the killer might have positive feelings for, that the dog might be helpful to trigger some emotions in the dream... or something like that. I dunno, to make him feel at home or whatever.
The reason why Red Dragon succeeded is because we were able to identify Dolarhyde, we knew who he was, we felt sorry for him, we saw him fall in love with another woman and his serial killer mind didn’t know how to handle it. Here, I don’t have a clue of who Carl is, and I don’t even care enough to find out
If you have to ask someone not to post memes or references of something arbitrarily deemed "dead" by random people, then its not technically dead yet... by the way: "so i herd u liek mudkipz..."
Eh, that would actually be kinda interesting. Both movies had their pros and cons. The three things I personally liked about the old film was Robert Redford, the music and costume design; as for the new film, I liked most of the cast, the cinematography, the costume design and the music (it was also more faithful to the original, but went a bit far when it came to dropping anvils. Though, the book wasn't exactly perfect either, what with Fitzgerald sacrificing realism and character development for the sake of dropping anvils and romanticizing Gatsby the gangster).
Just watched it for the first time and I gotta say it's pretty underrated. It is dated and miscast, but so many good ideas... Something like this today would be awesome.
I know this was posted so long ago that the people of Channel Awesome are probably not going to read this, but to those who may be find this fascinating: The guy the Critic joked about having those twitchy eyes, he can't help that. The actor was born with nystagmus, the Dancing Eyes syndrome. Normally the characters he portrays are written to also have that disability....most likely after he was hired for the part.
13:33, this is because the feed was switching between her and Carl. So he saw her memories of that room and recreated it in his mind. And this is why she gets lost and stuck in his world. Honestly, did you even watch the film????
I suppose I’ve come to appreciate this film a bit more over the years but I have to admit that I still agree with the whole “be disturbed” thing. The visuals are very surreal and interesting but there are certain points where shocking content is included for the sake of including shocking content.
Question. Does Uwe Boll actually believe he makes good movies? Or is he at least aware he makes crap and just doesn't give a shit because he knows he'll still make money due to tax loopholes?
Executive Meddling: During the mind scene where Stargher disembowels Novak, Novak was supposed to remind Catherine that she had an abortion at college, which made her become a child psychologist. I... miss this Nostalgia Critic ... I really do. No ... complex skits with multiple people ... just plain ole' NC doing what he does best without the need for too many comic foils. There might be one like Carl here, or Terl, or even Dr. Smith but at least there weren't like 20 skits interlaced between the movie clips. Least of all there weren't any entire movies redone via those skits ... course we can blame the MPAA for that.
K-C Rhoder Sees the World! He's in T2 but he's in tactical gear. The scene where Miles Dyson blows up the cyberdyne floor he's the seat leader that yells for everyone to get out.
Well, it is visually interesting and has nice music. But the characters aren't fleshed out. The only reason I kinda care about Lopez's character is because she's physically perfect
Do you know here in Syracuse New York they were filming a movie with Vince Vaughn and he was actually here in downtown Syracuse New York,I have no idea if the whole movie is going to take place in Syracuse but me and my mom went down to watch them shoot the scene and it was really awesome, if we would’ve stayed out there longer we would’ve probably saw Vince Vaughn
This guy obviously didn't understand this film. The Cell is an excellent movie. It is: A taut thriller that really does build the suspense. Things just become more urgent with each passing minute. A science-fiction movie that explores an interesting idea and does a great job of conveying it with very odd visuals. I can't stand reviewers that think they're entertaining. I'm not a Jennifer Lopez fan but this movie managed to catch my attention and solidly keep it. I could in no way anticipate what would happen next. That is what a good film is supposed to do, I think. I recommend "The Cell" and give this film 4.5 / 5 stars.
Carl is smoking, so he is TOTALLY an intense character, so we totally know him socially. Also, he's probably also a sociopath, which makes knowing him socially hard.
At 7:46, that's actor Pruitt Taylor Vince (from The Mentalist) and he has "nystagmus", a condition which causes a person's eyes to move rapidly back and forth involuntarily.
Fun fact: Tarsem, Michael Bay and Zack Snyder were all buddies at film school together.

Kugawattan The things he wants to do to Jane..... no wonder he's a jungle boy.
Tarsem: "Be Disturbed"
David Draiman: "Done"
"oh-wa-ah-ah-ah-ah!"
I remember watching this and when the scene of the woman floating through empty space. I came up and said "this movie cost me 17 billion dollars to make and it was well worth it" my father almost choked on his dinner laughing so hard
"If you would be even more obsessed you would eat those cigarettes" 😂😂😂
i think despite its flaws this movie is really trippy and fun, like actually legit really fun on acid especially. thats when i first saw it. ignored it for years and finally chose it as an option during an acid movie marathon, which is like my favorite thing ever because acid really allows me to focus fully on a film and take in every aspect.
"Kittens!"RRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!"What was that?!""Its too deep, you wouldn't get it."
Some killers do actually stop themselves. Not because they want to of course, and rarely do they stop permanently. But many do stop for fear of getting caught or wanting to let the heat die down first.
I remember watching this movie when I was a little kid and I would remember random parts of it and never know where they were from. This review actually helped me solve something that has bothered me for close to 16 years.
they ripped off the armor design from bram stoker's dracula.
Tj Chapman The same costume designer. When she found a design she liked, she LIKED it
Maybe it was reused. Waste not, want not.
It’s the same costume designer for Dracula
"The Fall" was a really good Tarsem film.
dreamlandnightmare i saw that movie a few months ago and the fotography is quite good!
Awesome movie
Immortals I thought was decent too lol
What do you think was so pretentious about it?
The Cell: a triumph of Style over Substance.
jettisoncargo I don't care. I like it.
All the random imagery and what I want to know is... why is there a dog in the dream machine room? No really - why?? Is he a vital part of the tech?
Don't question the movie, or else you'll have the director jumping around all night outside your house yelling: "Ask me what it means, ask me what it means!"
It's the killers dog, that he uses to lure women close to him. The psychologists think that since the dog is the only living creature they know of that the killer might have positive feelings for, that the dog might be helpful to trigger some emotions in the dream... or something like that. I dunno, to make him feel at home or whatever.
So could you explain the horse?
***** Ok, thanks.
Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Lopez, Vincent D'Onofrio & Hank from Breaking Bad; what a cast
My teenage self loved this movie, my adult self is like 'I miss the simplicity of my teenage self. But thankfully I grew out of it, R.I.P teenage me.'
The reason why Red Dragon succeeded is because we were able to identify Dolarhyde, we knew who he was, we felt sorry for him, we saw him fall in love with another woman and his serial killer mind didn’t know how to handle it. Here, I don’t have a clue of who Carl is, and I don’t even care enough to find out
in this world it's Disturbed or be Disturbed
you mean "its disturb or be disturbed."
I think the world is a scary place now that you've woken up the demon in me!
***** Power beyond containing.
***** Define "Dead" in terms of a videogame.
Undertale != Meme instead Undertale = Game That still runs on modern hardware, so... its not really dead.
If you have to ask someone not to post memes or references of something arbitrarily deemed "dead" by random people, then its not technically dead yet... by the way: "so i herd u liek mudkipz..."
Has Critic done Jack And Jill? If so please reload it.
The NC can only take some much before it becomes life-threatening
Crispy cremestarrrrr
I also saw killer cumstarrrr
He hasn't, but it's on my wish list for him to do it.
Shitty comedies are harder to review. There are only so many ways you can say that something isn't funny.
He made a joke that we would have to write a paper "interpreting the director's intent' or whatever but I literally have to do that and it is hell
This movie is so pretentious, I'm surprised the Cinema Snob hasn't reviewed it
I enjoyed "The Cell" but this review was very entertaining.
I guess you were Smart enough to get it
I really want Nostalgia Critic to do an old versus new of the two Great Gatsbys, but I doubt many other people would be interested
Because both versions suck in their own way and completely miss the mark when it comes to the source material.
You look yummy! ; )
@@KPater-mf4je Doug hated Moulin Rogue, so he would probably hate Gatsby too, it's a shitty movie no doubt
Why does Tarsen look like Shaymalan ?
that's racist....AND now be DISTURBED!
Because Tarsem _is_ Shyamalan! What a Twist!
the same reason u look like Harry Potter with progeria and I look like a blue man
He looks nothing like shyamalan.
SHYAMALAN TWIST!
Just watched it for the first time and I gotta say it's pretty underrated. It is dated and miscast, but so many good ideas... Something like this today would be awesome.
I know this was posted so long ago that the people of Channel Awesome are probably not going to read this, but to those who may be find this fascinating:
The guy the Critic joked about having those twitchy eyes, he can't help that.
How do you know this?
I suppose I’ve come to appreciate this film a bit more over the years but I have to admit that I still agree with the whole “be disturbed” thing. The visuals are very surreal and interesting but there are certain points where shocking content is included for the sake of including shocking content.
19:56 "What am I doing down here? I could be trying to track down a meth dealer named Heisenberg right now."
I'd watch that. I wanna see a film where Heisenberg is hunted by the FBI using Scott-Fi Tech
10:14 as a Marilyn Manson fan, I can confirm that this is the type of imagery that most Manson fans are used to
The guy who did this film also did the music video for Losing My Religion and the Snow White box office bomb, Mirror Mirror.
@4:57 I never realized it, but that's Hank from Breaking Bad!
5:08 Hey, it's Hank from _Breaking Bad_.
also alot of other things... like under the dome, and... um... breaking bad?
The first episode of V.I.P (Bryan Cranston is also in the same episode).
He's also the tumor-head mutant guy in the original Total Recall that says to Arnie "You got a lot of nerve showing your face around here"...
What???
Have to check that out
So The Cell is in the same universe as Breaking Bad. Hank was in the FBI before DEA
00:24 Uwe Boll's personal philosophy
What, you mean "I make crap?" I thought it was, "I am the only genius in the whole fahking business." Or something.
Question. Does Uwe Boll actually believe he makes good movies? Or is he at least aware he makes crap and just doesn't give a shit because he knows he'll still make money due to tax loopholes?
Ask me what this comment means!
What does this comment mean
thank you, was it as fulfilling for you as it was for me? DEEPNESS!
+Rawbeard It was good for me, was it good for you? 😂
this disturbe me
be disturbe

This is actually one of my favorite movies. It's just so visually stunning.
Every dream sequence in this movie looks like a Lady Gaga music video
No it doesn’t
jesus lord, this aged so well with 911
I hate how accurate this is
the music for this sounds like an elephant being raped by bagpipes.
The stretching skin on his back when he hangs does kind of make my skin crawl. That’s all though
OK, I practically fell over laughing at the Twin Peaks joke. So very very well-played.
Executive Meddling: During the mind scene where Stargher disembowels Novak, Novak was supposed to remind Catherine that she had an abortion at college, which made her become a child psychologist. Test audiences didn't like it and was replaced with Catherine's brother in a car accident and a coma for six months before his death.
17:30 Interesting fact: this is actually a set from the music video for Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box that they didn't end up using in the final cut.
21:50 This, too.
I... miss this Nostalgia Critic ...
4:56 is that Hank from Breaking Bad???
Ye
He's also in Lethal Weapon 2, The Firm, and Terminator 2
yes, this is a reupload.
K-C Rhoder Sees the World! He's in T2 but he's in tactical gear. The scene where Miles Dyson blows up the cyberdyne floor he's the seat leader that yells for everyone to get out.
Don't forget Total Recall and The X Files
0:34 This is where The Cell comes in.
Ay, Doug, did yo ever get my PM regarding the Interstellar Six-tit Clowncats?
I might be able to hook you up with some quality content~
i would watch it some times i get a movie just because of the weird title or something odd or a bit different plain is so boring
I'm holding you to that
5:48 I've spent the last 10 minutes uncontrollably giggling at this
This movie needs a serious remake.
Going into a serial killer's mind would be good for a horror game.
My last name is pronounced E so I'm technically Mr. E
The boat won't sail
Well, it is visually interesting and has nice music. But the characters aren't fleshed out. The only reason I kinda care about Lopez's character is because she's physically perfect
Really enjoyed the movie myself. Great visuals and the interactions within the mind space were easily good enough to give it a thumbs up.
A+ for Twin Peaks reference
Do you know here in Syracuse New York they were filming a movie with Vince Vaughn and he was actually here in downtown Syracuse New York,I have no idea if the whole movie is going to take place in Syracuse but me and my mom went down to watch them shoot the scene and it was really awesome, if we would’ve stayed out there longer we would’ve probably saw Vince Vaughn
I love this movie so much, the visuals are stunning and the story is pretty cool. But your take on it makes me giggle :D
This guy obviously didn't understand this film. The Cell is an excellent movie. It is:
A taut thriller that really does build the suspense.
I watched this video when I was wayy too young. I come back years later because I could never forget how hilarious nostalgia critic's videos are
Imagine this movie is the reason Dean Norris was casted as Hank Schrader.
I just finished watching Twin Peaks and now I'm watching this whole review for that one joke
Anyone notice the red suit looks like Dracula armor from 1992's Bram Stroker's Dracula movie
